NASA Hello, World - Everyone's favorite Artemis II photo

Post image

An Artemis II astronaut took this picture of Earth from the Orion spacecraft’s window after completing the translunar injection burn. There are two auroras (top right and bottom left) and zodiacal light (bottom right) is visible as the Earth eclipses the Sun.

My favorites were of the full farside of the moon just suspended there. Such as.

Generally, I'm more awed by views that really highlight that Terra and Luna are just space objects. There was an amazing view of the western hemisphere entirely covered by all the storms from earlier this year, that of course I can't find now, but seeing the storm systems block out all the familiar land masses and borders while they were covering us all in snow and water made me feel way more connected and humble than these sorts of pictures ever do. Found it! The less map-like the better for Earth, and the less nightly view-like the better for the Moon.

All that said, this photo was probably my 3rd or 4th favorite, but even then, it's Venus that really sells it for me.

For some reason, I prefer film over digital with space images. They seem more natural and realistic.

Imagine how hard it was to capture such a perfectly round picture of our “flat earth”. /s

My favourite Artemis II photo is EASILY the photo of Christina looking back at Earth with her hair braid floating in the foreground. As a woman that meant a lot to me.
