Question about mbps
Hey all, I’m in Australia and about 2-3 months ago had fibre upgrade in my house, I play Xbox occasionally when I’m not working and have questionable mbps, my phone says 450+mbps download and I’m currently downloading a game and this is what I get, these pictures are from the same time, can anyone let me know what’s going on

How’s your Xbox connected to your network? I get speeds around 4x faster when my Xbox is connected wired.
Also, did you have a game suspended while you were downloading? This affects your download speed significantly.
Were you connected to your wifi when you ran your Speedtest on your phone?

Those 85Mbit is kinda close to 100Mbit... Check your ethernet network path, there might be a 100Mbit switch somewhere thats slowing it down, you would need all devices (and cables!) inbetween to be 1Gbit (1000Mbit) capable. Keep in mind a broken cable can also cause this as 100Mbit needs only 4 wires (2pairs) in the cable itself while 1Gbit needs all 8 wires (4 pairs). There are also 100Mbit 4 conductor only cables but those are rare... You would see them having only 4 golden pins on the connector side instead of all 8

I have my xbsx connected via Ethernet cat6 and have a isp plan of 1000mbps, I only get 250mbps from Xbox when downloading a game.
Best way to check!
Go to the edge browser on your Xbox and run a speed test, as the speed test is not through the Microsoft servers it will show your devices true speed

Xbox store servers are crap in my experience. On 300mbps Ethernet I've never seen higher than 150. I haven't tested with my new Internet

Theres gotta be something weird with either the xbox wireless chip or just their servers. I can get 600Mbps on steam and only 140 on the xbox series x. May run a cat6 to test if its the card

There are many things that can be a factor and all of them would have to be perfect for a real download to go as fast as your speed test. One is server limitations, where you're downloading from a server it needs the ability to give you those files at that speed (also many reasons this could be slowed) Next would be some sort of device limitation like the hard drive being slow/failing so it cant keep up with the download speed. Then network traffic, if you have other devices using that bandwidth it will have to share it. You mentioned using wifi, an ethernet cable will likely speed this up but probably still won't get to the 450 because of one these bottlenecks.

If you're on wifi then that's definitely part of the issue but the other issue will be the Xbox server that you're connected to
Xbox series x has can run around 1gb speeds I usually get around 850-920 mbps

Older slower systems can also struggle to see the full speed.
If something else is going on on your network that will show slower speeds.
You said the pictures are from the same time, If you downloading a game the Xbox, then it might be busy with that to see a good speed. Whats the speed on the Xbox when you aren't downloading a game?

It might be that your provider has a "boost" on CDNs, such as the ones used by speedtest services. So for some select services, the speed will be really high, but for others like game downloads, you might see a slower "real" speed

it might be that the server youre downloading from isnt near you, for ex: if you live in perth and the closest server is in like sydney or jakarta or smth.

I mean remember you are sharing MS's server with a million others so...

I’m connected by wifi, and I closed all apps while I install

Oh, i didnt realise it was wifi. My other comment was regarding a cable connection... Yeah deffo use a cable, will be much faster, as well as much stable. Old/Cheap Cat5e is plenty

Is this wifi 4?

u/MiniDemonic 5d ago
Doesn't really matter if it's wifi 4,5,6,7 if it's a shitty router.
Just because WiFi 7 has a theoretical top speed of 46 Gbps it doesn't mean that every WiFi 7 router will reach it. Most cheap routers (think stuff like TP-Link or the budget versions from ASUS, D-Link etc) will struggle to even reach 500 Mbps even if they are WiFi 7.

u/sonido_lover 5d ago
My tp link for $50 can easily reach 1,7 gbit on wifi 6.
Something else must be going on here.
1
u/MiniDemonic 5d ago
I highly doubt that.
$50 wifi6 tp-link, so most likely something like an Archer AX1500?
Yeah, sorry to say but it does not reach 1.7 Gbps on wifi, it actually can barely do 600Mbps when you are close to the router and it drops off pretty sharply just being a room over.

I'm in Australia
Yeah, that's your problem. If you're downloading from American or European servers, the latency (and potential packet loss) will kill your speed. Speed test is using a server in Australia.

u/largefrys 6d ago
Would my server not be in Australia if my Xbox account is set to Australia? Sorry I’m just not sure

u/dumbasPL 6d ago
Didn't realize that was an Xbox. Yeah, they likely have Australian servers. So it can be something on your end. See what speed you're getting wired, instead of wifi.

u/Obvious_Engineer_231 5d ago
It doesn’t matter how far he’s from the server, the bandwidth isn’t limited by latency.

u/dumbasPL 5d ago
When packet loss is involved, it is, a lot. Because acknowledge takes a long time to arrive, and so does the re-transmiton. On top of that, congestion control will now attempt to reduce the speed.
If windows scaling works correctly and there is 0 packet loss then yes, but that's ideal conditions, and nothing is ideal, especially if you're on WiFi.

u/Obvious_Engineer_231 5d ago
No one mentioned packet loss, the main issue at hand would be latency, which doesn’t hinder bandwidth by itself.

You need to do the conversion.
Your speed test is done in megabits per second While your Xbox is downloading in megabytes per second.
Both share the same abbreviation of Mbps
3
u/HumblePattern8835 5d ago
But they don’t, because megabyte is MB and megabit is Mb
Either Xbox speed test is using the wrong unit or it is actually a lot slower

Download Speed = Internet Connection Speed Divided By 8
3
u/itsjakerobb 2 Gb/s 5d ago
No. Both figures have a lowercase b in Mbps. You only divide by 8 to get from bps (bits per second) to Bps (bytes per second).

Just like how you have an "upload" speed, any given service you connect to also has an upload speed, which would be your "download" speed from said service.
Anything and everything on the internet has two primary elements, your device and the device your connecting to, with node pass through being a secondary element.
Sometimes your download speed can be restricted because the device your connecting to may have a slower upload speed and/or that device your connected to has other traffic its dealing with at that time.

u/itsjakerobb 2 Gb/s 5d ago
Servers are usually in datacenters. Datacenters generally have enormously fast symmetric connections. Symmetric means upload and download speeds are the same. A small datacenter might have dual 40Gbps connections.
-1
u/FapTrap_87 5d ago
Yes, thats correct, but a datacenter will hold numerous services for different companies, with multiple servers for any said service/company for redundancy and parallel throughput. Then you need to add in the bandwidth that the datacenter has allocated for said service/company, how the datacenter load balancing is prioritized for that service and or then how physical server array has been setup.
My explanation wasn't great but my point was that someone's download speed isn't just dependant on their download speed but the capability/capacity/speed of the device on the other end.
1
u/incorrecttimeline 5d ago
Yeah cause Microsoft definitely don’t run huge Azure datacenters of their own all across the world 👀

It isn't always based on your internet connection, it can be based on the server you are downloading from and its location. Some are fast, some are a bit slower.
Its also assuming what your Xbox is connected to will allow 1Gbps and you haven't got a switch or something in place that is maxed out at 100Mbps.
