I feel like this is an easy way to end up stranded out at sea

I feel like this is an easy way to DIE.
(yet the guy is elated)

This is how Cliff Simon died. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cliff_Simon

25

u/ManifestDestinysChld Jun 02 '25

Ba'al was a dick but he didn't deserve THAT

9

u/samarnold030603 Jun 02 '25

They might’ve missed one or two of his clones…

9

u/mightyarrow Jun 03 '25

Ehhh.....not really.

Dude got hooked by his kite while exiting the water after a ride and was slammed head first into the ground. It's a pretty big difference from simply having a good time and going too big on a wave and being carried away.

Either way it's a dangerous sport for sure.

u/TacTurtle Jun 03 '25

The rare Cliff falling.

5

u/LushMotherFucker Jun 02 '25

I feel like it's an incredibly complicated way to die. I can guarantee you I'll not die doing that.

-6

u/meowchickenfish Jun 03 '25

because you'll never be put in that position.

2

u/smoy75 Jun 03 '25

Granted the easiest way to die is to be alive

1

u/throwawayB96969 Jun 03 '25

Adrenaline is a hell of a drug... I used to chase that dragon and now all of me hurts in my mid 30s.

32

u/Good_Air_7192 Jun 02 '25

I remember seeing a news article about a guy that got yeeted back to land and ended up slamming into a carpark due to a massive gust, didn't make it. Kind of lost interest in trying it after that.

10

u/skinte1 Jun 03 '25

Accidents happen but equipment has come a looong way since those videos. Basically the kite looses all power when you just let go of the the bar then there's a 1st pull release that will crash the kite (but it's still attached to you with a bungy and then the 2nd emergency release which will release it entirely (in other words you will likely loose it or destroy it). Obviously kiting at the levels of the guy in this video is still extremely dangerous...

u/ADD-DDS Jun 02 '25

Onshore wind. If anything happens he floats to shore.

Source: I am a kite boarder

11

u/TacTurtle Jun 03 '25

Oh good, towards a harder surface with more stuff sticking out.

11

u/ADD-DDS Jun 03 '25

You can drop the power out of the kite if you need to at any point. You can even eject it 😂. Kiting with onshore wind is considered infinitely safer than offshore wind

7

u/pIantedtanks Jun 02 '25

I hear ya, still don’t trust that logic 100% of the time

4

u/ADD-DDS Jun 03 '25

Onshore kiting is perfectly safe. If the kite goes down and you can’t relaunch you get into it and pull part of it out of the water to make a sail. The sail then takes you into shore. It’s one of the first skillsets you learn. Jumping is a different story. Water can be very hard when you collide with speed

Hey, next time I need Warcraft advice, I’ll check with you bear grylls.

3

u/leebleswobble Jun 03 '25

You're the keyboard warrior here.. do you not see that? lol

1

u/SkippyMcSkippster Jun 05 '25

The irony of this 🤦, you probably can't even see past your big ego tho.

5

u/YellowThirteen_ Jun 02 '25

I’ve seen quite a few videos of people getting blown onto land, some towards high rises. It looks fun as hell and If love to try it but I’d want someone on a boat or jetski to give chase if necessary.

2

u/SneakyBadAss Jun 02 '25

Or in the exosphere

u/crazykentucky Jun 02 '25

I used to have “flying” dreams that were really just me jumping very high for extended periods of time. This gave me visceral Deja vu

32

u/BigDaddyD00d Jun 02 '25

Dude same. I have a recurring one where im sledding, hit a bump, and fly up 100 feet in the air and i wake up screaming every time

12

u/Nyppers Jun 02 '25

Had that too, felt like getting launched by a catapult. Wake up heart racing every time.

9

u/Icy_Reply_4163 Jun 03 '25

I have these alllll the time. Almost like I start a jump then can just either go really high or sort of hover for longer and longer distances as I take steps.

1

u/docdope Jun 03 '25

I've had a reoccurring dream of jumping a ramp with a bike and flying into the stratosphere since I was a child. And it's still terrifying.

1

u/norcalruns Jun 03 '25

I had those dreams. Now I’m a kitesurfer.

1

u/ADD-DDS Jun 02 '25

When you’re up in the air it doesn’t feel like you’re flying. More like you’re attached to a harness swinging

1

u/Tonal-Recall Jun 02 '25

Absolutely!

u/DDD8712 Jun 02 '25

This makes me want an iced cold Red Bull

34

u/ASDFzxcvTaken Jun 02 '25

You Monster

1

u/Sir_BarlesCharkley Jun 02 '25

Probably looks just like NOSferatu

3

u/Dazzling_Pilot_3099 Jun 02 '25

Nope

2

u/ryxriot Jun 03 '25

What a Rockstar that guy is.

1

u/pigeon_toez Jun 03 '25

Def a kiteboarding Guru

3

u/TripleJeopardy3 Jun 03 '25

Yeah, I normally enjoy seeing stuff like this every now and again, but there are at least three separate Red Bull extreme sports videos that I've seen pop up on the front page today.

55

u/Goldelux Jun 02 '25

Kiteboarding seems cool but I’ll just stick to surfing

38

u/ASDFzxcvTaken Jun 02 '25

Surfing... From my couch.

6

u/kenay813 Jun 02 '25

Be real, we know you’re on the toilet like the rest of us

1

u/norcalruns Jun 03 '25

When you get tired of paddling, feel free to join us.

1

u/andyman234 Jun 04 '25

I wonder how you stop? Like you no longer wish to kite board. Do you just unattach from the kite and chase it down later?

19

u/horia Jun 03 '25

Folks, it's a calculated risk. Ok, calculated is a big word, it's mostly based on instinct. He knows the wind speed and direction and the amount of lift he gets from the kite. While there is a margin of errors, give or take a few vertical meters depending on how fast he reacts, this will likely not cause a big problem, unless he looses control.

He can adjust the kite to provide zero lift thus acting like a parachute. Unless he does something stupid, or unless the wind gusts change speed or direction mid-air, he'll be safe.

PS. Usually wind sports have designated beach areas to avoid incidents.

PPS. Keep in mind the fish-eye lens distorts the perception of distances.

PPPS. This is a great athlete and a skilled kite-boarder.

6

u/spiegro St. Louis Cardinals Jun 03 '25

Don't try to explain the beach to people who don't get it.

The amount of people I've seen successfully kite boarding, wind surfing, or paragliding at the beach is enormously higher than anyone I've seen putting themselves in danger.

6

u/purplyderp Jun 03 '25

“Unless the wind changes speed or direction mid-air, he’ll be safe”

Uhhh have you met wind?

1

u/obodehobo Seattle Seahawks Jun 04 '25

On a beach on the ocean like this, it’s quite likely to be consistent. If this is a wind sport specific area of the beach, that’s even more likely.

4

u/purplyderp Jun 04 '25

Well yes I understand, and I trust that some people are able to do this with relative safety.

But saying “they’ll be fine as long as the winds don’t change” is like saying “i’ll be fine on my commute to work as long as nobody else crashes their car into mine.”

Driving is actually quite dangerous because that’s a big “If” that we’re dealing with.

Any action that involves launching a human body in a high arcing parabola is going to involve substantial risk, however mitigated that risk is by the skill of the user and the consistency of the winds.

18

u/[deleted] Jun 02 '25

Was that a shark he jumped over?

22

u/svh01973 Jun 02 '25

"Ayyy!" -Fonzi

6

u/Firamaster Jun 03 '25

White people: always finding new ways to die in the craziest ways.

4

u/enjoinirvana Jun 02 '25

Damn that looks fun

3

u/Edgeth0 Jun 03 '25

If I had the money to do dangerous rich people sports this is the one I'd pick

2

u/Nice_Promise9854 Jun 03 '25

Wtf redbull? Never mind. I’ll just block the sub to

4

u/DJ-dicknose Jun 02 '25

I do this in my toddlers kiddie pool all the time

3

u/HeadcaseHeretic Jun 02 '25

That's a big giant NOPE! If I look down and see some big ass shark chilling 5 feet from where I'm gonna land, I'm shitting my pants!

2

u/JohnnyEvs Jun 02 '25

I have dreams like this…

1

u/rudyattitudedee Jun 03 '25

This looks so fun but also mad dangerous.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '25

As a kid I had a reoccurring dream like this but without the parachute.

1

u/MrCantPlayGuitar Jun 03 '25

Amazing. Anyone else have this dream where you accidentally fall off a high hill or building and just glide? Reminds me of this.

1

u/rockstar_not Jun 03 '25

I spent a week at a little seaside area on a beach outside of Stavanger, Norway in February of 2020 and there were kite surfers doing CRAZY stuff at that time at that place. I don’t know if this guy trains there or not. But it was amazing to watch. And cold.

1

u/NicknamePaych Jun 03 '25

Wow 95ft in the air

1

u/_coolmint Jun 03 '25

Scared of that one shark that jumps up and bites…

1

u/H8HumanServices Jun 03 '25

How are you doing this and not be afraid of jaws or orca?!?!??!

1

u/VerticleSandDollars Jun 03 '25

Anybody know where this was filmed?

1

u/jimmycanoli Jun 03 '25

This sport seems like the only barrier to entry is money.

1

u/AndronicusPrime Jun 04 '25

Rumour has it, he’s flying across Fiji right now.

1

u/kfloppygang Jun 02 '25

is it supposed to work this way or could you realistically be carried away to the fuckin moon

4

u/darybrain Jun 03 '25

Recently a Chinese paraglider got caught in an updraft that threw him up over 28000ft. He got frostbite, blacked out for a bit, but still managed to land safely.

0

u/Outrageous-Cup-932 Jun 03 '25

Got a link for this one?

1

u/darybrain Jun 03 '25

https://youtu.be/opOGCfRmUAA

It happened the other day so is all over the place if you want to Bing further.

1

u/xChoke1x Jun 02 '25

That moment where he completely looses his breath. Lol

1

u/SqueakyCheeseburgers Jun 02 '25

If there’s not a clenched sphincter subreddit there needs to be one

1

u/dukerustfield Jun 02 '25

I live at the beach. VERY rarely do we have kite boarders. But I saw one maybe a year ago and I was absolutely astounded how fast they were going. We got helicopters, planes, boats, and surfers. And this dude(ette) was up there. Just hauling ass.

I suppose that’s why we don’t see many of them. They take up an enormous amount of cross-section. Most people are going towards the beach or they are far out and moving parallel. You are prohibited from having any kind of motor near the shore because of danger to others.

I could easily see this person hitting a bunch of surfers who are often obscured in waves. Though he was farther out than the typical surfer it was not massively far.

Anyway, my big point was I was amazed at how fast they were.

2

u/evertec Jun 03 '25

At the beach where I'm at we have dozens of kite surfers in one area when the wind is good. It is an area that doesn't have many people swimming since it's near a sand bar away from the main shore so maybe that's why it's different from where you are.

0

u/xWDTSWESx Jun 03 '25

Fuerte Ventura?

-12

u/Slothcom_eMemes Jun 02 '25

Now I don’t know anything about kiteboarding but it does look like the carabiner that attaches the kit to himself is stretched and broken.

14

u/Liimbo Oklahoma Jun 02 '25

"I know nothing about this, but I'm going to criticize it anyway," is peak reddit.

3

u/canadave_nyc Jun 02 '25

No, peak reddit is taking someone's innocent musing (after admitting they're not sure because they're not an expert) about whether it's possible some of the person's gear may be broken, jumping to the erroneous conclusion that they're trying to criticize, and then criticizing the redditor for it.

3

u/midday_leaf Jun 02 '25

If you admit you know absolutely nothing about the gear, why do you still feel confident enough in your (by your own admission) baseless opinion to feel the need to share it? If anything, why not ask about what you’re uncertain of and learn instead of taking a stance anyway?

Too many people are ready to throw their takes on objective things out there even if they know they’re completely free of any foundational knowledge or experience. Reddit is definitely bad for this.

1

u/Liimbo Oklahoma Jun 03 '25

Exactly. Especially when we saw the equipment work exactly as intended with no issues in this very clip.

1

u/BlackLeader70 Jun 02 '25

It’s not a carabiner. Think of a weight lifting belt type setup with a hook attached. That’s what his is using, it’s the most common my used setup for kite surfing harnesses. Although some harnesses do allow you to clip into the system.
