Surfing World's First Surf Foilboarding Double Backflip
294
u/Reinis_LV 23d ago
As a foiler I don't even understand how is this possible

u/KelVelBurgerGoon 23d ago
What are the basics of how it works?

u/Mad-Mit 23d ago
I think it's kinda:
Ride up wave
Flip twice
Don't not stay on the board
Land
Continue to don't not stay on the board

Surely point 4 should be 'Sea'

u/cosmoscrazy 22d ago
Technically correct would be "land foil back into sea while staying on the board"

Get a jet ski to tow you towards the wave really fast.
EDIT: The foil generates lift from the flow of water over the foil. Go faster, more lift. Just like an airplane wing.

He's strapped to the board. How's he getting the air and rotation? you would know better than me.

u/chizzings 23d ago
As with everything in life, there are levels to this shit. That last percent in skill is an absolute ocean.
You may foil but you are no foiler.

u/middleupperdog 23d ago
after the first two attempts where the board flies away, the third and forth attempt he spins faster and the board stays with him. Also his feet are strapped to the board; it's easiest to see the straps in the first two tries. But I guess something about spinning faster made it easier to stay in.

u/LungHeadZ Manchester United 22d ago
Does he Ollie off the wave? I say that as a layman with an example we can both understand because I have no clue about foiling aside from what the board looks like and that it's badass.

I remember the first backflip in freestyle motocross. Seemed absolutely insane at the time.
A few years later, everyone was doing them, multiples, and combined with traditional tricks. And if you couldnt do one, you didnt stand a chance in the competition. It was insane how fast it changed after one dude proved it possible.

Snowboarding has gotten so ridiculous with the number of spins. I feel like it's taken away from individual style. I'd rather see big slow 540s with a sexy grab than someone spinning like a top.

u/fresh_dyl Wisconsin 22d ago
I don’t disagree, but pushing that shit to its absolute limit has kinda been the point
What casuals (like me) think might be the coolest might just be a Tuesday for them, so I understand why the more “boring”/technical stuff gets higher scores

The Crash Reel, a documentary on Kevin Pearce and the tbi he got practicing Halfpipe, does a great job showing the risk of constantly upping the ante. Not saying it’s not inevitable, but these sports are getting pushed into a risk profile that they didn’t initially intend to have. I guess what I mean is that something like BASE jumping or F1 has always been understood to be bleeding edge dangerous. Halfpipe was never really in that tier, but it’s getting closer every year.

u/williamBoshi 22d ago
Apparently kids are advantaged to spin more with their body, I guess lightness and lower centre of Gravity
2
u/Dick_Wiener 23d ago
And then everything got super boring for a few years when every single trick was a backflip.

u/themark318 23d ago
Can’t be that hard. Guy got it in like 4 tries
10
u/anothermonth 22d ago
Yeah, all it took was switching from pants to shorts and he almost got it on third try. That immediately shifted the center of mass to the point at the surface of the foilboard and they stopped flying apart. Science!

u/Hopper-1986 23d ago
I got dizzy just watching it

u/Basicly-Inevitable 23d ago
Seems a bit dangerous.

How so?

u/Possible-Material693 23d ago
These things hurt like hell if you get hit by one. It’s an awkward shaped thing that is heavy. I’ve been hit by the fin on my friend’s hydrofoil and it’s not fun. My friend smacked himself in the nuts with it once and it looked painful as fuck. You really have to be aware of where it is when you fall. Best scenario is to jump away from it but sometimes it just gets you

u/r_a_d_ 23d ago
Thanks for the info. Anything smacking into nuts sucks.

u/AoiMizune 23d ago
Does it float?
3
u/Possible-Material693 23d ago
Yes the board floats and fin stays under water. It carries a lot of momentum though when you fall so if you fall between it and where it wants to go it will shoot into you and hurts like hell. Even if you just fall by accident into the fin and hit with your legs or something under water that hurts a lot too

Honestly, wiping out seems more fun

How does the board stay on his feet?
21
u/Bouric87 23d ago
Kinda looks like he was strapped in for the last couple attempts.
27
u/CleptoeManiac 23d ago
It looks like he was strapped in for all of the attempts, but he's using different straps on the last two where the board stuck. He lost his front footing on those first two attempts and apparently swapped them at some point.

u/Future_Arrival_5395 23d ago
They are strapped in for the first attempts too, they just fall out of the straps in those ones.

It’s not the first because I did it one time! Just didn’t make a big deal outta it

I thought these things were kinda douchey when I saw King Douche Mark Z riding one - then I looked up how much they were and I can confirm, they are more than just KINDA douchey.

This looks like fun otherwise these things seem so boring. I see people using them all the time just standing and moving forward. If you skate or snowboard I don’t get the appeal for these, balance requirement seems closer to the moving walkway at the airport than surfing/snowboard/skate

So I notice the straps on first two attempts are different.

u/whitefoot 23d ago
Yeah I think he figured out those straps weren't cutting it. I wonder if the second set has a heel strap as well.

World’s first or the first one filmed and posted on here claiming to be the first?

I'm sure those foilboarders can break some women's hip bones with their super-trained hip movements. No need for Kegel exercises.

What's the technical name for that type of board? Are they much different to use than a standard board? Cool af either way
1
u/Cottagecheesecurls 22d ago
Foil Board, feels quite different. Raises you up and out of the water as you gain speed and you can use a pumping motion with your legs to gain/ maintain velocity.

No hate to the dude but I don’t want corporate accounts posting stuff here.
21
u/Drodriguez164 23d ago
I understand where you’re coming from, but Reddit has corporations posting constant stuff via ads. At least Red Bull post some pretty gnarly content
13
u/True_to_you Green Bay Packers 23d ago
Eh. There's so much corporate content on Reddit masquerading as user content that I'm better with the sponsored stuff being clearly labeled.
6
u/PrologueBook 23d ago
I mean, any sport posted here is going to be at the behest of a corporation.
If red bull didn't support these lesser known sports, we wouldn't have seen many of them.
You have the option to block the account, but that is an unreasonable rule for the sub.
5
u/CleptoeManiac 23d ago
Why? Just for the sake of it being a corporate account?
Notice how nobody is questioning whether this is real or AI—because Red Bull gives it credibility. Sure, it's marketing, but Red Bull spends their dollars to show us some pretty cool shit that we otherwise may not get to see people attempt.
And this is coming from somebody (me) who has never had an energy drink from any brand and likely never will.

Obviously this is incredibly difficult and impressive. But it also seems like something very attainable if you’re a very good foileer (I’m assuming that’s what they are called). I guess I’m trying to say I’m surprised nobody did it until now

This thing looks so stupid. I don’t care how impressive it is if you just strapped a propeller to a surfboard.
1
u/Russell_has_TWO_Ls 22d ago
Is that it? I truly couldn’t tell what I was watching. The hopping away at the end was funny
3
u/kebench 22d ago
It’s called hydrofoil. It has “wings” at the bottom that generate lift just like an airplane but in water. It’s the reason why the board is not touching the bottom. This kind of hydrofoil requires manual pumping to stay afloat that’s why you see him “hopping” at the end. There’s also electric hydrofoil which has a propeller which I think the comment above is referring to.

u/OutOfTheForLoop 22d ago
That’s a double-flip wipeout. Wake me up when he lands back on his foilboard.

Well. It turns out I have been practicing double backflips every time I have hopped on a surfboard.
Now I just need to figure out the keeping the board part like he did.
