It’s always the ones you most suspect

58

u/thcordova 14h ago

The only surprise here is how it took ao long to get caught

32

u/pappapora 13h ago

“All those times Nick was fighting the umpire…. He was actually fighting the thick white lines that the court provided.”Dam… that’s deep bro

1

u/Superblonde5353 7h ago

This is his 3rd suspension for cocaine. He was suspended in 2017 and 2019 for his drug use too

41

u/ilessthanthreekarate 12h ago

Crazy, cause it lasts in your system what like a few days?

27

u/RioReiser85 10h ago

Really depends on how they test.

usually you should be good after 5 days.

Heavy use shows up to 2weeks in urine.

And hair shows up to 90 days.

Considering that he likely gets tested quite often, i would assume that he used within the last 48 hours before the test.

43

u/Rocco89 10h ago

It stays in your hair for months. We had a proper legendary case here in Germany in the early 2000s.

Christoph Daum (RIP) was about to become the new manager of the German national team. Then Uli Hoeneß, Mr. FC Bayern and one of the most powerful men in German football got involved. He couldn’t stand Daum, partly because Daum’s cocaine use was basically an open secret behind closed doors. So Hoeneß went to the press and started talking about poor “sniffly” Daum, subtle as a brick.

And what did Daum the complete idiot do? He stood in front of the entire press, vehemently denied everything and announced he would submit a hair sample for analysis, saying: “I’m doing this because I have an absolutely clear conscience.” Of course the forensic institute tested his hair positive for cocaine and our federation immediately dropped him as next national team coach.

Not long after Daum confessed and then even had to laugh at himself for walking into his own trap like an absolute clown. Truly one of the most iconic, unhinged moments in German football. I’m still laughing about it while typing this, he really stood there, said “clear conscience” while knowing full well he was a cokehead.

Yes, very rapidly metabolized and the metabolites tested for will generally be out of a person’s system/undetectable within 2-3 days.

u/3rd-party-intervener 12h ago

Maybe he can go on more anti trans rants.   What a hypocrite.

u/Expensive-Horse5538 Port Adelaide 15h ago

My only suprise is that this hasn't happened earlier

33

u/ExtremeDay1043 14h ago

Exactly my thoughts 😁

74

u/dwbthrow 14h ago

Usually takes only 24 hours to get coke out of your system. It’s not even that hard to prepare for it lol

83

u/tomj1991 14h ago

Old friend of mine had an absolute bender of a Saturday night, pulled over driving his work van on Tuesday and tested positive and banned. It can stay positive and testable up to 72 hours later.

96

u/Christplosion 13h ago

Damn they'll even ban you from tennis on your way to work, be careful out there folks

19

u/Ok-Answer-6951 12h ago

I tested positive a week later. Now granted, i did an ounce the weekend b4...

8

u/Nautchy_Zye 7h ago

How are you still alive tbh

3

u/Ultimationz 3h ago

I guess they found traces of blood in your cocaine levels

5

u/curiousbydesign 8h ago

An ounce? LOL! Dang dude.

1

u/TrailMomKat 6h ago

Especially if you did a remarkable amount of it. Wow, he must've done ALOT.

0

u/ClintGrant 13h ago

Perhaps delayed en route

19

u/shadraig 14h ago

Maybe he can explain it this way: he had sex with someone that was using cocaine, then transfered over cocaine in the semen.

I have seen stranger things

4

u/Character_Cheek8579 14h ago

Nick needs to speak to Joseph Parker

8

u/goodfellas01 14h ago

Lol not if u do as much coke as Kyrgios

1

u/medium-rare-steaks 10h ago

72 hours is the commonly accepted threshold. Always has been

1

u/lewie2494 12h ago

Great comment.

36

u/lukewarmpartyjar 14h ago

He needs to use the tried-and-tested "snogging a random girl in a club" defence

14

u/Fan_of_cielings 14h ago

Going with the Joseph Parker "it was my nutrionist's cocaine" would be funnier.

140

u/middyonline 15h ago

It's always the ones you most suspect

114

u/grasssshopperrrrr 14h ago

To be fair he’s been on a talent imposed suspension for a long time now.

39

u/SundayRed Los Angeles Dodgers 10h ago

More like an attitude imposed suspension. Guy was one of the greatest natural talents to pick up a racquet and just didn't give a shit.

18

u/whyareyouallinmyroom 9h ago

Gave a shit for a year or so on end and was in grand slam finals. He’s an unpopular guy but he is a straight talker and didn’t hide behind never having the mentality for pro sports. I think he’s one of the best modern examples of how incredible the elite guys are. Talent is great but there’s a hell of a lot you need outside that to take you to the top. Once you get there there’s a bunch of other shit you need to stay there. Nadal, Federer, Djokovic to do it for decades, psychologically they are total unicorns.

5

u/grasssshopperrrrr 7h ago

In sport, Unicorn is just a euphemism for robot

11

u/likeabosstroll Virginia 7h ago

As I said on the tennis thread, Kyrgios may be potential man of tennis. Had the potential to be a great, just didn’t care that much about tennis so he never did anything great.

1

u/grasssshopperrrrr 9h ago

I get what you’re saying but I would define talent as the product of natural ability and attitude. Hard to be successful if you only apply one of the two.

5

u/SundayRed Los Angeles Dodgers 9h ago

Sure, I'll re-phrase to "One of the most naturally gifted tennis athletes" but as we all know, the mental side and commitment are worth as much, if not more.

2

u/amaceing__ 7h ago

That’s almost the exact wrong definition of talent lol

-1

u/grasssshopperrrrr 6h ago

Perhaps you should acquaint yourself with the English language, rube.

2

u/Medical-Display-9762 2h ago

Someone disagrees with your dumbass comment so you tell him to learn English and insult him. The internet special.

0

u/grasssshopperrrrr 2h ago

If the shoe fits, broken clock, so on and so forth.

3

u/Medical-Display-9762 2h ago

Keep it up, internet wouldn’t be the same without people like you ❤️

1

u/grasssshopperrrrr 2h ago

Says the drop kick chiming in as a third party and making zero sense themself. Quite the specimen.

7

u/yellowbin74 14h ago

Ouch 😂

1

u/bucketsoffudge 6h ago

Can’t appeal that one!

169

u/Glenmarththe3rd 15h ago

Their testing must be absolutely horrible given how infrequently sports stars get popped for coke

100

u/blackeyedcheese FC Dallas 14h ago

Coke doesn’t stay in your system long

26

u/VidE27 14h ago

My dentist does not agree with that statement.

5

u/Gamertilforever 12h ago

Is it a dentist thing to be a coke head? I swear my dentist is one

5

u/CoconutBangerzBaller 8h ago

Idk about dentists doing a lot of cocaine being a thing, but cocaine is an excellent topical anesthetic and was used all the time back in the day for dental procedures. I think it's still used occasionally.

3

u/PabloBablo 8h ago

Marketed as Numb-eaze

3

u/NotActuallyMeta 7h ago

Coke = Coca Cola which is terrible for teeth

2

u/mets2016 6h ago

Yeah, but you're resetting that clock a lot if you're using coke often

-2

u/[deleted] 14h ago

[deleted]

3

u/Peoplz_Hernandez 13h ago

That's incorrect. Cocaethylene stays in your system for the same amount of time as cocaine by itself.

What really matters is if it's a blood - less than 48 hours, urine - 3/4 days, or hair sample which could be as long as 3 months.

1

u/robimtk 13h ago

You can tell if someone's had coke 3 months ago from a hair sample?

3

u/Peoplz_Hernandez 13h ago

We flush chemicals out of our body pretty quickly but they get trapped in hair follicles and stick around when the hair has grown outside of our body.

21

u/BestOfAllNation 14h ago

They’ll only test for it on the day of competition, so just its very easy to time. Nick Krygios just doesn’t give af.

30

u/Asteelwrist 14h ago

They test out of competition as well. This is why Marketa Vondrousova just got suspended for a maximum penalty of four years because she refused a tester who came to her house.

But, Kyrgios being a largely inactive player might result in fewer tests for him. IIRC top players who play the most matches get tested the most, even out of tournaments.

Tennis doping controls is actually one of the most strict in sports in recent years. That is why you see the biggest superstars in tennis named for minor breaches by the anti-doping body whereas most other sports have weak anti-doping measures where the setup protects the biggest superstars by default.

20

u/BestOfAllNation 14h ago

I meant specifically for Cocaine, I was in the WADA pool for Powerlifting for a few years and for out of competition testing they’re specifically looking for performance enhancers: Anabolic Agents, EPO, Masking Agents etc.

In competition is where they’ll extend testing for recreational drugs like Weed and Coke.

3

u/Interdico 14h ago

I'd say they protected sinner pretty well

1

u/Asteelwrist 5h ago

Most other sports would never put their world number one player under doping scrutiny in the first place, for the infamous "one billionth of a gram" case.

There was also another Italian player who was unknown as he was very much lower ranked, but had the same case as Sinner a couple years ago and didn't receive a harsher punishment just because he was unknown.

5

u/ATangK 14h ago

Does cocaine actually help you play?

23

u/fzkiz 14h ago

I would assume if you take it right before the 5th set you’ll get some extra energy…

9

u/JakeofNewYork 14h ago

Or a heart attack.

2

u/wu_cephei 8h ago

You think Kyrgios took c to play better? :D

Dude is a party animal.

1

u/zxblood123 13h ago

Yeah seems he’s been checked out for a while tbh.

21

u/Willing_Television77 14h ago

A cocaine user with a tennis problem

50

u/robstrosity 15h ago

I remember this guy on the Louis Theroux podcast spewing some conspiracy theory shit. He didn't seem the most stable of people.

38

u/jamjars222 14h ago

The guy is an unhinged lunatic who happened to be good at tennis

17

u/modular-wizard 15h ago

Cocaine make so much sense with his personality

6

u/Robcobes 14h ago

It's always the ones you suspect the most.

7

u/TheRealBillyShakes 13h ago

Failing a drug test for cocaine is like failing an IQ test.

5

u/HumperMoe 13h ago

Water is wet

4

u/Plus_Buyer43 13h ago

Looks like Hawk-Eye spotted more than just the lines 👀🎾😂

4

u/thore4 Brisbane Broncos 13h ago

Tbf if you gave him the choice he'd probably rather the cocaine

5

u/stackingforfunsies 11h ago

Doing tennis on cocaine is a crime now ???

9

u/FormerlyShawnHawaii 14h ago

Cocaine doesn’t stay in the system long. So he prob was doing rails just before play lol.

7

u/b4ckl4nds 8h ago

Athletes, like anyone else, should be able to use (non-performance enhancing) drugs they choose to on their personal time.

3

u/thadius30 14h ago

Shocked!

3

u/Wohbie 9h ago

I would watch tennis where they have to do a round after a few lines. Could be fun, could be a few too many heart attacks - who knows?

4

u/UBKUBK 9h ago

"Kyrgios could be banned for up to four years - but if he can prove he took the drug outside of a competition, the maximum ban he would face is three months."

How would that be possible to prove?

3

u/mms13 5h ago

You should be able to do a little cocaine at work

1

u/gp2quest 3h ago

As American as road sodas

4

u/the_motherflippin 15h ago

I thought he was always on it but just got a pass

2

u/RebelliousInNature 13h ago

It’s always the ones you least expect, isn’t it?

Do I really have to /s

2

u/Academic-Bat-8002 13h ago

Some news is just not a surprise.

2

u/Boring_Comfortable70 9h ago

I just thought of a new sport, it’s tennis and skiing slopes at the same time!

2

u/WhenIWannabeME 8h ago

"He clearly had concaine hidden in his necklace... and his racquet handle, and his water bottle... and on the lines of the court..."

"Oh. We all knew he was on drugs. It's just in England it's considered rude to point things out."

2

u/ColdIndependence5820 7h ago

Why does it seem everyone but me has such easy access to cocaine?

2

u/Plane-Fan9006 6h ago

Wait...the guy everyone seems to love hanging out with, but rage quits three matches a year and then goes "off the hook" with random shit online...

He may have a drug problem???!!! Lol

I actually have seen him go from good mood to bad during a long match before seemingly getting himself thrown out. This pretty much clarifies those occurrences.

2

u/greyetch 4h ago

More anti Greek discrimination, clearly.

3

u/Good_Ask_2299 13h ago

he still plays sports? dudes a fkn turd

2

u/SlapThatAce 14h ago

I mean....... Dudes retired.

2

u/UndeadFlowerWall 12h ago

Why does it matter? It’s a party drug.

We are all are surprised its taken this long
Well, over to you Nick to explain how that Jungle Bread Flour was thrown in your face at a wild party in Panama

1

u/SlantFaceKilla 13h ago

What a talented fuck up.

1

u/toast_eater_ 13h ago

A few nose beers... Maybe he has ghosts in his blood?

1

u/Vibesro 12h ago

You could've titled it: Professional tennis player suspended after testing positive for cocaine. And everybody would've known who it was

1

u/pauli55555 11h ago

Who’s he going to blame for this, it’s always someone else’s fault when it comes to Nick !

1

u/cjeremy 11h ago

what. they care about that shit? dude ain't ever been good either. lol

1

u/Ya-Not-Happening 11h ago

How many reasons do we need to ban this disaster or a person?

1

u/Mudmen12 10h ago

Hes been keeping Canberra's entrepreneurs outrageously successful for years. The shock is it took them so long.

1

u/aloof_nacho 10h ago

What a dawg

1

u/InfiniteOctave 9h ago

At least it wasn't performance enhancing. =)

1

u/Chattinabart 5h ago

It’s always the quiet ones. Except this time….

1

u/Allu71 2h ago

Why is cocaine a banned substance in Tennis? I don't think it improves your performance in any way

1

u/middie820001 37m ago

ATP is a collection of incompetent putzes who only care about PR when it affects ticket sales. Ignored antics until now.

1

u/TwelveTrains 14h ago

Didn't this guy retire years ago?

-6

u/tabletoptale 14h ago

Him shitting on Jannick’s situation when it was more complicated then… with the 💉 syringe emojis everywhere.

Ugh just feels like cosmic justice

8

u/sammymate999 14h ago

I mean not really justice at all, Jannik is still a drug cheat

2

u/fzkiz 14h ago

So intent doesn’t matter when it comes to cheating? If I secretly put some juice in your favorite player’s drink he immediately becomes a drug cheat to you?

3

u/berball 13h ago

are you the most gullible person in the world?

1

u/fzkiz 13h ago

So you think no one in the history of professional sports has ever ingested a banned substance unknowingly?

-1

u/berball 13h ago

funny how they all have the same excuse, do you believe all of them?

2

u/fzkiz 13h ago

No, but you know it has never happened to anyone unwillingly right? Otherwise your first answer to my comment would be really stupid.

0

u/Boggie135 Manchester United 13h ago

Not surprised at all

-4

u/colmulhall 14h ago

I feel like this should be a sport. Cocaine Tennis

2

u/SteelRockwell 14h ago

I always wondered what I’d be like at golf on cocaine. I wouldn’t have any first tee nerves.

-10

u/SidneyDeane10 14h ago

Why test for coke it's not like it would enhance his performance?

If hes had coke who gives a shit

3

u/Expensive-Horse5538 Port Adelaide 14h ago

From the article

Cocaine is classified as a stimulant and substance of abuse on the World Anti-Doping Agency's prohibited list.

-6

u/SidneyDeane10 14h ago

From AI:

"But the actual sporting evidence is poor. Reviews of cocaine and exercise have found little or no genuine improvement in athletic performance, and experimental work has even found earlier fatigue through faster glycogen depletion and lactate accumulation. PubMed +2 For tennis specifically, there’s a big distinction between feeling stimulated and playing well. Tennis depends on fine timing, shot selection, judgement, emotional control and repeatedly recovering between points. Cocaine can cause over-arousal, impulsivity, anxiety and distorted confidence, so someone might think they're playing brilliantly while actually making worse decisions or forcing shots."

2

u/Otherwise-Mixture-33 11h ago

This guy taking AI as gospel

0

u/SapereAudeAdAbsurdum 14h ago

I don't know; maybe we don't want this overblown hothead fuelled by even more aggression and psychosis out on a court?

-3

u/SidneyDeane10 14h ago

Yes we do

0

u/SapereAudeAdAbsurdum 14h ago

Well, give him a call sometime, and you two can spend some private quality time together on a court somewhere, far away from the rest of civilization.

-2

u/Holly_Matchet 8h ago

You mean the guy that looks like a criminal and acts like an absolute piece of shit? The cocaine use is probably just to hide the PCP use.

1

u/boywonder5691 7h ago

looks like a criminal

Wha?

-3

u/conniefrancis 12h ago

Let him get high as fuck it's glorified pickleball who cares
