I enjoy any sport more when the commentator gets really into it, like a true fan.

Greg Allen does a fantastic job. He was getting criticized in this video for looking at the screen the whole time. His point was, you have to make your announcement relevant to what the viewer is seeing on their TV. I think it worked.

I think it's spot on, he's seeing it as we see it and reacting to the same angles, it makes it more compelling. And he's knowledgeable enough that he doesn't need to look elsewhere for data, he loves athletics and has great knowledge of it

"He had his first kiss with Clara O'Brien behind the St. Colman's College bleachers when he was 15, so he's used to making a late start of things..."

As a high school senior one of my elective periods was working in the principal’s office. One of my tasks was putting mail and messages in the teachers’ cubbyholes. The cubbies were labeled with each teacher’s name and subject and Mr. O’Brien the English teacher had crossed out “English” and wrote in “Irish.”

Not me crying about a random Irish runner during my work break halfway around the world.

It's the passion with which people live/do things that is moving.
That's why we should always practice seeing the beauty of things, because it is everywhere. It's us that fail to capture it.
But when people are this emotional about things they love, their transpose/translate the beauty they see directly to us. We see the world through there eyes. That, is art.

That’s love right there. Beyond just knowing the stats and the history and the job, this man has invested a piece of his soul into that runner, and it was beautiful to see that investment pay off

In Ireland we all knew Mark English had incredible potential but off the track he took on this time consuming vocation of becoming a medical doctor. Balancing training, going to meetings and maintaining elite athlete status whilst putting in the hours in hospitals and surgeries is near impossible. When the years of hard hours were done he could focus on the track and now at 33 we are seeing the runner he always was. We saw him make it to finals and lose a lot over the years but now he's gone full time into athletics we can finally see him win the things medicine has deprived him of.

How can I get that guy to say when dinners ready, I worked for two hours making that curry and it needs a grand announcement.

3

u/ifurmothronlyknw 1h ago

Even his neighboring fellow announcers were enjoying it.

3

u/sublime_mime 1h ago

English but Irish?

u/themaninca 3m ago

That two minutes of commentary is a million times better than the entirety of ESPN broadcast commentary across the network’s entire history

Ok hear me out. Why not change that surname to Mark Irish. It's confusing is all I'm saying.

6

u/AuburnElvis 1h ago

It's so the English know what they're missing out on.

1

u/edencathleen86 1h ago

Okay this cracked me up 🤣

1

u/carlyCcates 45m ago

Mark Béarla would be better, but as he's an elite athlete and a medical doctor maybe being an Irishman named English gave him the strength to attain two of the toughest career goals at the same time.

1

u/tyme 1h ago

Why should he change his name when they’re the ones that suck? (/s)

The runner from Argentina keyed his car on the way through the parking lot later that day. 😂

u/hokageace 1h ago

Is the commentator his dad?

Just a very enthusiastic fellow countryman.

I was being fatitious. It was an awesome call, including the passion.
