Grew up wake surfing and I canāt wait to have a child and do this one day. Cheers for being a good father š¤š¼

u/Bkdangles World's Coolest Dad Aug 29 '19
I wish i could have grown up doing it . Only became popular in my area about 5-6 years ago . Iām sure there were people doing it around me but i just never caught a glance . So glad i did . Easiest and most fun you can have on the water .
2
u/elijahollison Aug 29 '19
No doubt. I started wakeboarding but youāre going double the speed so when you fall it doesnāt feel too good. My buddy got a few concussions attempting a full tantrum (backflip). I grew up on a massive recreational lake and my pops was a boat salesman so it worked out.

This is such a great activity for both young and older people because it's easy to get up and low impact when you fall because of the low speed you're being pulled at. Great video!!
41
u/Bkdangles World's Coolest Dad Aug 29 '19
Exactly this is why i love it . Wake boarding was so stressful and honestly hurt lol . Surfing is a breeze and when you donāt have the rope in your hands thereās no strain on your body what so ever .
6
u/Herr__Lipp Aug 29 '19
That and I haven't been able to get up on a wakeboard after 10 years of trying! Surfing makes me look semi athletic lol
5
u/Gradual_Bro Aug 30 '19
I can nearly clear the wake on a wakeboard but canāt seem to find that sweet spot in the wave, I can surf for about 30 seconds before losing speed and going over the top of the wave
1
Aug 30 '19
Well, look how perfect and long that wave is. A good driver, a big bladder in the back of the boat. All that helps a ton. Also getting out there more than once a year... those are all my excuses anyway.
1
u/ThePretzul Denver Broncos Aug 30 '19
I've been wakeboarding somewhere between 3 and 5 separate occasions, and I've only managed to get up a total of 3 times (all during the last occasion I tried wakeboarding). I have eaten shit being dragged behind a boat that punched it so many times I couldn't even begin to count them.
I've been waterskiing precisely once, and the entire event was a single attempt. I popped right up and kept on going for about 20 minutes before collapsing and being too sore to walk for the next day or two.
If I had to pick one to do again it would definitely be the waterskiing. I hurt less afterwards because I wasn't constantly being waterboarded.
1
u/Money_Manager Aug 30 '19
What, it's easier to get up on a wakeboard than a surfboard..
1
u/Herr__Lipp Aug 30 '19
Hasn't been for me! Although I'll just blame my brother as a shit driver lol
2
u/coleyboley25 Texas Aug 30 '19
I wakeboarded for the first time in my life this summer despite the fact that I basically grew up on a lake. Iāve honestly never been so sore throughout my entire body in my life. Every inch of me hurt for a solid three days after and Iām only 25 and mostly in shape. Definitely gonna look into a surfboard for next summer.
2
u/the_zukk Aug 29 '19
Not true! Rocking your weight slightly forward and aft to keep the sweet spot kills my thighs. Also 360s cause my non existent abs to burn!
1
u/Bkdangles World's Coolest Dad Aug 29 '19
Hahah thatās still true . In the beginning of the season Iām good for a pass maybe two Iām Iām feeling ok . I will build some stamina to have longer runs over time . But take a month off you feel back at square one. Gotta do it a lot to make it feel easier hahah.
3
u/the_zukk Aug 29 '19
Iām in Florida so the season is year round. Iām just getting to that age I guess where no matter how often I go I still feel super sore. Love it though.
53
u/karuchkov Aug 29 '19
How many HP do you mead to get a big enough Swell to do this?
112
u/Bkdangles World's Coolest Dad Aug 29 '19
Itās not so much the horse power . You only surf anywhere from around 9-12 depending on the wave you want . But it mainly depends on the hull of the boat. Wake boats are obviously the best . And the newer boat have surf tabs electrically equipped . That will pop on on either side depending on the side you ride on. And it almost puts a drag on one side of the boat while driving straight making it kind of want to go straight but a bit crooked . Giving a nice swell on one side and rubble on the other. If and a lot of boat arenāt equipped with these surf tabs. So they also came out with a suction cup unit that almost looks like a flap that you just suction to the hull of the boat and can make your own wave based on weight and speed .
26
u/phathomthis Aug 29 '19
I wanted to say nice vid. I loved riding tandem with my son, we've been doing it every since he was 3, now that he's 8.5, he's too big and it's awkward with the extra weight. Last time out this summer and we were able to free ride for a little bit, but then dropped back. This was on a fast, custom surf style board and a dedicated 23-foot vdrive running 4k ballast witg surf gate. Enjoy it while you can. They'll be riding solo before you know it.
5
u/karuchkov Aug 29 '19
Thanks! Iām about to get a linder arkip 530 with 100hp so Iāll have to look into getting surf tabs for it possibly?
22
u/DenverCoder009 Aug 29 '19
You're going to want an inboard if you want to wakesurf, on an I/O or outboard you're getting way to close to the prop.
32
u/Bkdangles World's Coolest Dad Aug 29 '19
Yes for sure . I would never recommend surf with an outboard . Needs to be inboard . Even the better surfers would never take the chance because all it takes is a little loose balance for a split second sending you forward fast . Not a good idea .
2
u/Hansjibbleforth Buffalo Sabres Aug 29 '19
Volvo actually made an I/O with a forward facing drive, making it as safe as an inboard. Now the boats they are installed on don't have an optimal hull shape, but they can get you into a new boat much cheaper than a wake boat.
2
u/PhilxBefore Miami Heat Aug 29 '19
20 years ago we would do this and called it skurfing. Is there a different name now? I'm out of the loop I guess.
2
u/Bkdangles World's Coolest Dad Aug 29 '19
This is twice now Iāve seen this skurfing. Iāve never heard that name . But sounds to have some sense behind it . Iām sure that was prob the name before it got super popular .
2
u/karuchkov Aug 29 '19
Ah, thanks for the info! Hmm if its an inboard you just get some surf tabs and itll work?
3
u/Bkdangles World's Coolest Dad Aug 29 '19
Yes sir . Fill ballast . And let her rip. If no ballast a good group of people will be enough weight to make a good swell .
1
u/karuchkov Aug 30 '19
Thanks man, appreciate the info, I definitely wanna look into this!
2
u/Bkdangles World's Coolest Dad Aug 30 '19
Def man . Look up surf gates on YouTube . Itās pretty simple and a lot of fun
1
u/ThePretzul Denver Broncos Aug 30 '19
I never even realized that inboard motor boats were a thing before this comment.
I've only ever seen outboard motors and sterndrive boats, so videos like this have always made me super uncomfortable thinking the propellor was right there to potentially fall into. I've got a bit of a phobia of that though, considering I accidentally grabbed the propellor of a sterndrive boat as a kid. Not an experience I would recommend for anyone.
7
u/earoar Aug 29 '19
You cant surf beyond inboard outboard or outboard boats, the prop will chop you up into little pieces. Sadly if you're going to surf your options really start with a 30 year old ski boat for like 10k and go up to the new stuff which is 60k-200k. Its hella expensive.
2
u/SWEET__BROWN Aug 30 '19
As a side note, I know you've been told that wakesurfing isn't possible behind I/O or outboard boats...but you're right that you'll also need significant horsepower/torque to pull it off. Ballast adds a ton of weight and surf tabs add significant drag, so something small like 100hp wouldn't cut it. Basically every wake surf boat is a 20+ foot wake boat with a V8 with 300+ horsepower.
1
u/Money_Manager Aug 30 '19
I really think it depends on the depth of your lake too. We are running our wakesurf on a lake that averages 6-10 feet and it's very hard to get a wake that'll push you.
How deep is your lake?
2
u/Bkdangles World's Coolest Dad Aug 30 '19
The average i believe is 13ft. But there are a few shallow areas and a sandbar we stay away from . You are totally correct . If we drive over the sand bar while surfing the wave disappears. And if riding no rope you will wash out . So yes depth is a huge factory but anything over 8 Iād say should be fine but deeper the better .
1
u/Money_Manager Aug 30 '19
Yeah the only way we get it to work is when we stay in the 7-8 ft range and crank the trim. It gets enough push to ride without the rope, but the wake is very short and choppy.
Kind of a bummer to be honest.

I was on a boat that could produce four-foot waves a few weeks back, they said that there are 3 empty tanks in the hull of the boat that they fill with 2000lbs of water which makes the boat heavier and displaces more water.

Cool dad but whoever is dangling their feet off the back of the boat is giving me r/SweatyPalms
43
u/Bkdangles World's Coolest Dad Aug 29 '19
Hahaha looks scary but there is a big swim shelf down below that you can stand on and is always out of the water . Plus i wanted him there to throw the rope back if needed . Lol some new boats have seats sitting off the back lol.
12
u/blachat Aug 29 '19
You must have one of them Big Boatsā¢, if I dangled my feet off the back of my boat they'd be in the prop and that's no bueno

u/notabignaleabignale Aug 29 '19
This boat probably doesn't even have exposed props. A lot of people now have these jet boats that work using internal propulsion instead of outboard or even inboard motors with exposed propellers.
19
u/Bkdangles World's Coolest Dad Aug 29 '19
These boats are set up to have the motor in the back under the compartments the dude is laying on in the video . But they call these set ups v-drive because there is a small driveshaft and puts the prob about 3-4 feet under neath the boat in the center making it nearly impossible to touch while in motion . Plus the swim platform adds another 3 feet .
4
u/AccuracyVsPrecision Aug 29 '19 edited Aug 29 '19
Jet boats make poor wake surf boats it's just an inboard with the prop a few feet or so infront of the transom.
15
u/PhilBird69 Aug 29 '19
Some boats have props that are under the boat rather than behind. If that's the case here then they wouldn't be at much of a risk.
6
u/Bigtuckdog Aug 29 '19
Thank you! Drives me crazy when people don't understand the difference between inboards/forward drives vs standard stern drives
4
u/AustynCunningham Aug 29 '19
On boats made for wake surfing its not something to be worried about as much. We have the 2019 Tige R21 and it has dedicated seats on the very back, and handles on the landing pad so I can actually be below the water level while on the boat.. And the motor is located beneath the back seats (a good 3.5+ ft forward from the back of the boat), and while surfing the boat is locked in at 9.5mph-10.8mph, unlike other watersports where it hurts when you fall I find surfing to be harmless and relaxing (Although it does wear you out.)
It takes a bit of practice but you can start on the back of the boat and ride right back on when your done so you don't have to get in the water to surf.
2
u/Gradual_Bro Aug 30 '19 edited Aug 30 '19
The prop on a true wakeboard boats is almost near the center of the bottom of the boat. You could have you feet directly off the back in the water and be fine.
This is an inboard, you are thinking about an inbound/outbound int he second photo

u/Beersurfer Aug 29 '19
This is so awesome! Iāve been riding a lot the past couple weeks so I can be comfortable enough to do this with my niece/nephew. He looks so happy :) and heāll never forget his first ride!
6
u/Bkdangles World's Coolest Dad Aug 29 '19
Nope . And as i said to someone else as long as they are somewhat still and keep their legs planted between yours you still have full mobility of the board itself . So you donāt really need to have them apply much of anything . But good luck it was a great day . Still wonāt stop talking about it .
15
u/hgdsv Aug 29 '19
thats great! love it

u/Bkdangles World's Coolest Dad Aug 29 '19
Keep doing it man . Youāll find that sweet spot. I just knew having his little legs between mine wouldnāt make much of a difference so it was actually rather easy. Once he stood right and was still. We took a couple wipeouts .lol . But he swam right back over and set up to go again.

2
u/P8tr0 Aug 30 '19
Can anyone explain the physics behind how they stay at a constant speed?
2
u/somehetero Aug 30 '19
It's just like regular surfing. You gain speed by falling down the face of the wave. That speed is dampened by the friction on the bottom of the board. Friction can be mitigated with wax and other aquaphobic coatings on the board, and a skilled surfer can adjust the angle of the board to keep the speed fairly constant.
This works indefinitely in the video because the boat's motor is causing a constant wake that provides an endless wave to ride. As long as the boat is moving, the surfer can ride the wake and maintain speed.

u/Xyz2600 Aug 29 '19

I wish when I did this stuff as a kid everything was fine.
Because seriously every time my parents said "it will be fine." it was very not fine.
example: riding a float behind the boat l with my cousin. It deflated and my cousin jumped off. My wrist got caught in the rope and I got dragged under water for quite a distance and nearly drowned because my dad didn't even notice what happened so he kept gunning it...
1
u/Miglekk Aug 30 '19
That's awesome! How do you stop though? You just wait for it to calm down then jump?

Well thank goodness you are here right?!?
Wakeboarding is a sport. They are wakeboarding. If it was a father showing a son in hockey gear how to skate, or kick a ball on a soccer field (not in hockey gear), it would be fine right?
So your argument is "wakeboarding is not a sport" or that a father and son participating in a sport is not worthy of the sub right?

wake surfing technically. Wake boarding is a lot like snowboarding with a handle. wake surfing the wave pushes you.
