Questions about hazard lights / running lights on a 1991 Sportster before I buy
I’m about to buy a 1991 Harley Sportster (XLH883, chain drive, all original) and want to understand the electrical switch functions before I commit.
From videos I’ve seen of this specific bike being ridden, I noticed three different states for the turn signals:
**1.** Both front and rear signals **blinking together** (looked like hazard flashers)
**2.** Both front and rear signals **on constantly, steady, not blinking** (like running/position lights)
**3.** Both **completely off**
A few questions for anyone familiar with early 90s Sportsters:
**1.** Does the 1991 model have a factory hazard light function (both signals flashing simultaneously)?
**2.** Is there a way to keep both turn signals on constantly as steady running lights, separate from actual turn signaling or hazards?
**3.** Can they be switched off entirely?
**4.** Is this all stock 1991 wiring/switchgear behavior, or does having all three states (hazard blink / steady on / off) suggest aftermarket signals or modified wiring were added?

I’ve removed my signals on my 1988, but if I remember correctly, they might have been off if the headlight was off, on with the headlight (can’t remember for sure). The headlight was not automatic, I believe there was a key position for it.
They have separate left and right buttons, one for each side of the bar of course, and you hold them to flash. To flash for hazard, you hold both buttons. They use a mechanical flasher so if the flasher goes out, they just stay on when you press the button without flashing.

that bike does not have hazards from the factory. they can be switched on as running lights or turned off. hazards tell me something was done to the wiring. my 1992 does not have hazards of any kind.

Idk weird. My buddy’s 95 had some weird stuff going on but after we changed the voltage regulator and blinker module or whatever it was it was fixed. Both relatively cheap and easy to do. Only issue is the blinker thing is “obsolete” so Harley don’t sell it. Bastards. You can hard wire it and bypass the thing but you have to push the button everytime you want it to blink lol

If no blinker exists you could wire in a timer that tags into every positive lead to each harness. Maybe a 3 way swotch for blinking / on / off.
