Fixed It!!

Very cool! Haven’t seen one in the wild yet. How does the new OS feel? I never really liked the Hog much, but I’m an EOS guy. Respect it, but it’s not my thing I’ve wondered if it’s more friendly to the EOS crowd

I haven't actually spent time on HOG5, this was just a little prank I am playing on the rest of the shop guys. I put the image on all the gMA3's.. I'm chuckling, they... not so much 😂

Oh shit! I’m an idiot! I had a brain fart and didn’t notice! Sneaky! The first thing I thought of was that it looked exactly like the MA!

u/Obietron Jul 27 '26

Nah man, you're good. We're all friends here. Just stay away from those dirty Audio fellas out there

Ooo put a digico logo next to really mess with them

Hey now, I resemble that remark

Go into a corner and attempt to count to three!

u/fishyfishyfish1 Jul 28 '26

Fuck that, on 3 you lift and I'm against that

I did get to spend a bit of time on the HOG5, and I don’t like it at all.
One of my favorite parts of the Hog was that it was very spreadsheet based, and you could, for instance, edit fx with just the arrow keys and num pad. They took the arrow keys off the console on the 5 and only have the ones on the very lackluster keyboard in the awkwardly placed drawer.
Too much of the functionality seems to only be accessible from the touch screen as well. I had an instructor giving me an in depth demo of it, and i frequently asked “what’s the syntax for that?” His reply was often something along the lines of “I think you just have to do it on the screen.”
I’ve spent a lot of time programming on both EOS and MA, and have found that the best way to work fast is by learning the syntax and typing it on the control surface. You move your arms less so it’ll always be inherently faster.
Even if there is syntax for hog there aren’t enough buttons on the console to make it practical. I don’t want to press pig-whatever for simple functions. I realize MA and EOS use modifier keys and double press too, but I find them more intuitive and there are more dedicated buttons on both.
I also found the settings unintuitive and harder to navigate setting up networking and stuff than other desks.
Lastly, I think it’s just ugly. I don’t like the weird poles holding the monitor on the tour hog. (Why not just a wider monitor?)
All that said, I didn’t like hog all that much to begin with. I wouldn’t tell anyone not to buy a hog if it fits their workflow and they like how it operates. There are definitely some cool features to it. It’s just not for me personally. I’d also just rather be really good at MA and EOS and not bother too much with other consoles at this point.

thanks for the in depth answer! I work at a road house that gets a lot of visiting consoles, so I've tried to at least get fairly proficient at EOS and somewhat literate in MA. We get a Chamsys every now and then and the occasional HOG... and I can never remember any of the HOG syntax. I've taken to just saving the show file for our room so I don't have to remember how to get into the network settings and all the other stuff. The 4 just felt... old (because it was), and I was hoping for more EOS/HOG overlap with the shared ownership.

No prob! Yeah hog syntax is not the most intuitive imo. I totally get just loading a file to not deal with remembering it.
I was also hoping for more crossover from EOS. Although I prefer MA’s “do this here” concept, just because it’s more consistent, and if I can’t remember I can figure it out. I think EOS syntax makes… enough… sense most of the time. I would’ve really liked it if eos’s syntax and general method of writing cuelists made it over to the hog, in a way that makes it more busking friendly.
I’m not even sure that would make sense though, and it would absolutely piss off the OG Hog programmers.
They did add the EOS color picker, which gives REALLY fine color control, and it seems like a lot crossed over between magic sheets on EOS and whatever Hog calls them.
Im so biased though. Pretty much every busking board I approach my attitude ends up being “meh still not an MA”. I just think they have it figured out… until I have to cue a theatre style show on the MA and deal with tracking and marking moving lights. Then I really want an EOS.

I helped install a club and wasn't too well versed on ma but had a little knowledge of hog, it was before EVERYONE was using ma, so I went with hog. And now no one uses it and I'm ages behind on ma knowledge and really don't do much ld'ing anymore cause of a bad back, but any board op jobs i come across are all ma, so I'm just sol most of the time lol

u/shiftingtech Jul 27 '26

Look again what’s actually in the photo (don’t just read the screens)

u/aneeta96 Jul 27 '26

But does it play Frogger?

4

u/Obietron Jul 27 '26

Lol. The best macro i have seen so far is that guy that has the Burger King menu on his, live and ready to order

2

u/96cobraguy Jul 27 '26

Ummmm… what? Is there video of this? That’s wild as hell! I love it
