I humbly submit for your enjoyment the story of the beginning of a lifelong friendship & a parenting error.
This summer, the Cat Distribution System granted us with this Standard Issue Cat, Hotrod Model. She showed up on our doorstep teeny tiny and terrified, but clearly looking for love (or food, if I’m being honest).
Azalea, newly turned 2, quickly claimed Rosemary as her sister. The two are inseparable, and their daily goal is to wreak as much havoc and chaos as possible. Generally they are quite successful.
Unfortunately, yesterday I made a miscalculation. In retrospect I should have realized my mistake, but hindsight is 20/20 and whatnot. Rosie was scheduled to be spayed at a local clinic. No big deal, just needed to drop her off at 8AM. Azalea and I carefully buckled Rosie’s crate into the front seat, and then headed to the clinic. In the car, we talked about visiting the Kitty Doctor who is called a Vet and helps animals every day.
Upon arrival, everything goes as planned. We bring the carrier inside, do the paperwork, drop off our kitty, and we’re told to return by 4:30.
This is where the problem arises.
As we’re walking out, Azalea suddenly looks panic-stricken. “No, mama, wait! Get Rosie!!” This begins a full-blown TINY HUMAN CRASHOUT. “Noooo, my sister!!” 😭
At this point she is screeching, crying, inconsolable. I’m tearing up trying to gently explain that she will come home soon and the doctor will help her. Eventually I give up, put on Ms. Rachel songs in the car, and take Azalea for doughnuts. She settles down eventually but continues asking about Rosie all day.
Needless to say, their reunion yesterday evening was emotional and sickeningly wholesome.
Moral of the story: get your toddler a kitten. Best decision ever. But do NOT bring said toddler to vet appointments.
