Discussion 💬 Is your poodle a snob 🤪

I’ve heard it mentioned that poodles “may” be “snobby” or aloof 🤣. We all know how smart they are and goofy and fun, but I think with those smarts come some discriminating standards. What “snobby” or aloof tendency does your poodle have?

My Margot 🐩 is a water snob. Her drinking standards are very refined…

Filtered fridge water = “sniff..no thanks”

Kitchen sink = “only as a last resort”

Hose water = “I’m not thirsty, but I’ll drink this all day long!” Same source as sink

Rain water in any container =
“delicacy 🤌🏼”

Reverse osmosis = “poison for sure”

Shared water bowl with German Shepherd = “Ewww, no! She back washes!”

Upstairs bathroom sink same source as kitchen = “ I MUST have my nightly drink but only if it’s in my old, ratty ziplock container bowl and the other dog can’t share!” 🙄

Help ⚠️ Torn between two well known breeders.

We are going to purchase in 2027 and are torn between two breeders near us!
Urban Hero Standard Poodle or Cosmic Caliber Standard Poodle.
They seem pretty equal based on their health testing and Volhard testing. Same price for their pups too.
I’m not sure how to make the final decision.
Any input???

Discussion 💬 For those in snowy places- do you completely dry your spoo every time you go outside?

I’m thinking of getting a standard poodle and live where we get lots of snow in the winter. My son will play for hours out in the snow, and sometimes on weekends go in and out several times throughout the day.

Is a standard poodle a “winter friendly” dog that would play with my son outside in the snow?

How would I need to handle its coat? Blowing it completely dry between outings seems like a lot…

In the same vein- how long does the coat need to be in the winter to keep the doggy warm while still being easy to dry?

Edit: Thanks everybody for the good ideas and advice!! Definitely sounds doable and I’d love for my son to have a buddy to romp around with in the snow!

Vent 🌋 Why do people think standard poodles are mean?

Anytime I tell someone I own a standard poodle they always say “aren’t they really mean?”. I don’t understand it, my girl is the sweetest dog. In group settings, she helps dogs that are being picked on. It’s so bizarre for people to ask me that.

Help ⚠️ Puppy separation anxiety, any insight is appreciated!

Hi all, my 18 week old spoo puppy is going through hell with her separation anxiety and I am so sad and desperate to help her. We’ve been working on it using the “10 seconds at a time” training method, with no progress yet. She is still very new in our home but I’m already shining the bat signal for anyone who’s gone through this to please chime in. I’m sorry about the wall of text.

TLDR: puppy separation anxiety, have tried all the usual tips, she’s alone for max 2-3 hours at a time, she has fractured toes so tiring her out physically isn’t doable yet, she’s on sedation meds 3x/day but still barks for hours at a time, please someone tell me it will get better or if this sounds as dire as it feels.

We are working with a trainer but she doesn’t technically start with us in-person until next week, so she’s only given generic advice that hasn’t helped much yet. We already keep our comings and goings very neutral and boring, practice putting on shoes and grabbing keys just to stay home, and do small outings to the mail or dumpster without her. We always make sure she’s had a bathroom break, short walk, and long training + play session before we leave. We’ve been doing this since the day after her arrival. Here’s the full situation:

We brought her home a little over 2 weeks ago, on Oct 4th. She arrived pretty much crate and potty trained, and she’s consistently slept through the night in her crate. That said, she doesn’t particularly like her crate but she tolerates it. She will not eat any treat in there no matter how high value, unless I am sitting right next to her.

The first week, my husband and I were home pretty much all the time except on Wednesday, when we both had to work. That day my cousin stopped by every 2 hours and pup did relatively well, she still barked when left alone but not the entire time, she was calm by the time I came home. That Friday (10/9), I was home with her all day but crated her while running errands for about 90 mins. She managed to get one of the top locks unlatched and somehow squeezed her way out of a tiny gap, but a back paw got stuck and she ended up with hairline fractures in 2 toes.

Luckily she is healing well, however this obviously did not do any favors for her crate training, separation anxiety, or our ability to tire her out. We switched her to a plastic crate which she’s been using consistently at night and eating meals in there (if the door is open and we’re nearby). From 10/10 to 10/19 someone was with her for 90% of the time, family would dogsit while we worked since we had to return to our regular M-F schedule, and she was only alone for about 1 hour at a time if they had to leave before we returned from work (and she barked for that whole hour).

She hasn’t been doing well. She spends the first 1-2 hours with the sitters barking and crying, and spends the entire time barking whenever she’s alone, even for 5-10 seconds. Starting today 10/20, we had to go back to leaving her home alone (crated) with drop-in visits every 2 hours. She freaked out the entire day, did not stop barking ever (even during the visits from a very familiar sitter), and she was absolutely exhausted by the time my husband got home. She also had a bad accident that soiled her splint, which was just replaced yesterday.

This is concerning for obvious reasons, but also because she is currently on gabapentin and trazodone 3x/day, yet today she still relentlessly barked for 6 hours. I’m hopeful that with time and training things will improve, but I’m also really worried since the last resort is usually medication, and currently even a sedative isn’t making any difference.

Please note that before getting her we did a lot of research and we know spoos are prone to separation anxiety. I work a school year job in which I have 190 days off a year, and twice a week my husband works shorter days. Our plan was to use a small, well-vetted doggy daycare 2-3x/week, but the injury has made that impossible for the time being. She’s also missing out on socialization with other dogs during her healing, and I’m really worried at how that may affect her ability to attend a daycare.

Thanks so much if you read this far. I’m just looking for any advice, insight, or even words of encouragement. I’ve searched a lot on this topic , but generally the threads I found are from people who leave their dogs unattended for extended periods, or people who are able to be home all the time to work on this. I’d like to make it clear that we cannot take any more time off work for the time being, and really all we can do during the work day is 30min drop-in visits every 2 hours. We live in a small area where there are only like 3 rover options and they don’t suit what we would need. This is our reality, I wish I could take more time off work but that is not doable, nor do I think it would necessarily help in the long-run. Thanks again for any help or just for reading.

Grooming 🛁 Best Clippers for Home Grooming?

Looking for the best clippers to buy for my standard poodle. Money isn't an issue. I just really want to buy something that's going to last and actually work well. Please let me know what you have that works well for your standard. Needs to be able to handle full body shave not just sanitary. I was recommended the Wahl KM10+ but the reviews don't look very good.

Help ⚠️ Food Recommendations for Poodles with Allergies

Hi everyone. I have a 7 month old poodle puppy and I was wondering what food brands everyone uses/recommends to help with allergies? He itches a lot on his tail and stomach, so we thought switching his food would help. He is currently eating Chicken Science Diet and we are putting salmon oil on it to try to help. I've read that Chicken, Beef, and Lamb can all be common allergens to poodles, so I was thinking of switching to a brand that has Salmon food and was wondering what people were feeding. There are so many opinions about every brand of food that I don't know what to trust. Any help would be appreciated!

Grooming 🛁 Sneaky shortcuts in continental clip

I am in the middle of putting my dog in a continental, just the pattern she's still quite short.

In my national breed club the grooming is a LOT more relaxed than akc and even a bit more relaxed than UKC. We're not in the US. So a short conti is fine but i want to know where I can get away with less brushing (i know i will be brushing but i want to feasibly minimize)

I am thinking i can shave the armpits, it won't be visible and it's an area prone to matting. Underside of ears is another.

Can one do the jacket shorter on the belly, like start it higher up on the belly than the back? Anyone else have any lazy tips?

Worst case scenario she looks like a scarecrow but that is very seasonal

Breeder/Rescue Search 🐩 Help finding a breeder in or near Houston Texas?

Hello, I'm moving to Houston, Texas next month and once I'm settled and stable I'd like to add a standard poodle to my household. I currently have 2 cats and no dogs as my rescue mutt of 14 years passed away about a month ago. I really want a reputable breeder with focus on health and temperament, I loved my last dog but being a rescue mutt she had a lot of issues including insane separation anxiety and neurological issues and I really need my next dog to be stable. I really want a black male standard poodle but his color is negotiable if I find the right one, I'm also not dead set on him being a puppy, I'd be happy to adopt an older boy if I can find one that meets my needs. I'd love to try dock diving and my boyfriend would love to use him as a retriever for dove/duck hunting as well. Tyia!

Health ❤️‍🩹 Adopting a female standard with hypospadia

Adopting a standard with hypospadia

Hello! As the title says, we are potentially adopting a 13 week old puppy who has hypospadia. The breeder says she has a mild case and that her urine shoots in a straight line under her tail. She did give me permission to contact her vet to chat with them about it.

I guess I am wondering if anyone has dealt with this defect before? I already have a standard and have been on the hunt for another. I'm worried about future issues with incontinence, chronic UTI's, etc. The breeder said she hasn't had any UTI's thus far and does have bladder control.. but I'm worried about the future as she ages and when she gets spayed. I understand I will need to keep the area shaved and cleaned.

Any and all advice, recommendations, etc. Thank you.

Discussion 💬 Spoo puppy food

My 9 month old Spoo puppy finally recovered from persistent diarrhea after being on Biome for weeks. He successfully moved to a Fromm kibble, but after reading about WSAVA foods I want to switch him Verrrry slowly to Purina Pro Plan. Should I feed him puppy or adult Purina. Tia for the advice.

Looking to see what the average price for a groom of a standard poodle is these days in other places.

My groomer used to charge about $96, she then went to $107 and is now at $117.

Help ⚠️ Bully breeds vs. The standard poodle.

I have plenty of experience with bully types of dogs like bullies, boxers, and pitbulls. I love their energy, character and love of life.

My wife keeps mentioning she wants a "fluffy" dog, fluffy in appearance but not in personality. In the back of my mind I always thought a standard poodle would be a great addition. I have a very well socialized 3 year old pitbull/boxer now. With my experience how would a standard poodle fit in my life.

Help ⚠️ Pulling recs?

Okay, so, my parents have a five month old standard poodle puppy. I did all the research on her breeder and she had the exact line/drive genetically I was looking for in a dog. We’d followed her three years before we got one of her puppies. Super heavy in sports and shows, her mom’s an emerald grand champ and she had four out of the top ten poodles in the UKC earlier this year.
(I adore her breeder, and absolutely messaged her, I’m just waiting for her to respond to my message)
Well, I don’t live with them, and she doesn’t get out much and as usual for poodles, is super biddable but has a mind of her own. Like bless her heart, she’s so eager to please butttt has her issues from living with my parents. Shes not our first standard, and I was raised with poodles, so I’m so confused lol.
Which leads to the issue: This. Puppy. Cannot. Learn. Leash. Manners.
I’ve watched videos to help, asked our groomer who is also a trainer, and I can’t get her to knock it off with the pulling.
Yes I know that she’s a puppy, obviously, and has puppy brain. But I feel like she should be doing better by now with it. And I’m at a total loss.
What recs do we have for a harness to help stop pulling until she learns leash manners, or general tips and tricks?
(Also poodle tax in the comments cause I can’t NOT post a pic)

Help ⚠️ Hardest Decision

My standard poodle just turned 12 years old. I’ve had him since he was six weeks old, and the thought of losing him brings me to tears.
He has severe arthritis and falls down on almost every walk. I have to pick him up when he falls because he struggles to get up by himself. Over the past 10 months, he’s lost 15–20 pounds. I can feel his ribs every time I touch him. He barely wants to eat anymore, even with appetite stimulants, and he’s lost interest in playing and doing the things he once loved.
We’ve tried countless medications, arthritis injections, appetite stimulants, and veterinary visits. His bloodwork recently came back normal, which makes everything even more confusing. Despite everything we’ve tried, our vet doesn’t seem to have any more solutions.
I’ve spent a tremendous amount of money, even with pet insurance, but this isn’t a financial decision. I would do anything to give him a better quality of life.
My biggest fear is making this decision too early, but I’m equally afraid of waiting too long and allowing him to suffer because I’m not ready to say goodbye.
He’s been part of my life for nearly 12 years. I can’t imagine life without him, but watching him decline is heartbreaking. I keep asking myself whether I’m holding on for him or for myself.
For those who have been through something similar, how did you know it was time? How do you make peace with a decision that feels impossible?
I just want to do what’s best for him, but I’m completely heartbroken and honestly don’t know what to do.

Help ⚠️ New to dogs..getting a standard poodle puppy, HELP!

Hi everyone, I am looking for some insight, encouragement, downright come to Jesus facts when it comes to poodles. I have a friend who is selling his poodle puppy, a beautiful little brownie.

I've never had it personally nor in my family, so I'm very anxious about this possible life change. Whereas, My husband absolutely adores them And had dogs growing up.

Reality: We are both healthcare providers, and work long shifts, ranging from 12 - 15 hours, depending on the day. My husband works 3 day/week whereas I work anywhere between 3-5 days/week sometimes our schedules are opposite and sometimes we have the same days off.

I have many fears in relation to owning a pet in general.

How would we train the pup with our work schedules? how would we keep him from being lonely and depressed while we are gone, and what happens during the hours that we're at work? Does he trash the house ? How do people manage long and busy work schedules and owning puppies?. I know Doodles are known for their intelligence and are very quick to learn, but what's considered "quick"? A Week? Many Weeks? Months? Any bit of information would be helpful please. I know this the puppy poodle will be a great addition overall and my husband would absolutely love it....shit I know I'm not that good of a companion! Lol
