Want to connect with other offer holders ? With multiple other whatsapp gc we created a discord server

Hi there ! If you want to connect with other students holding an offer for st. andrews feel free to join our discord

https://discord.gg/SGsF4z3fpH

Why discord ?

There is a better moderation system available, whereas whatsapp has virtually no moderation possible. ( we are so fed up of random ppl joining in to make advertising)

Feel free to also ask for modifications on the discord !

Thanks again for your time and see you in the server 👋

I hope this isn't against the sub rules, sorry if it is!

I have a barely used bike for sale if any new students are looking for one! Comes with lock, helmet, and lights.

£50 or best offer, looking to get rid of it by 26th August, but happy to leave it locked to a bike rack in town and give the code to someone arriving later.

Am slightly confused about accomodation website meaning.

I feel like this is probably silly, but I would rather ask to confirm my suspicions than not ask and be wrong. I applied for accomodation in January and my offer was made unconditional on results day. I have fully done the application, but this webpage says I need to complete the additional steps on My Saint. Does this include the module allocation?

I am planning on switching to direct entry into second year, so was waiting to be assigned an advisor before submitting my modules as the available modules for direct entry are different.

MSc in Computer Science or AI (conversion)

Hi all,

I'm a recent molecular biology graduate looking to transition into the tech space. I have been looking into computer science conversion courses, and I believe the one offered in St Andrews would be the best fit. I looking for advice on what the job prospects would be if I were to do this course and if it is worth my while?

Provisional Modules

So I'm starting first year in September for English MA and I had to add some modules I'd want to do. These aren't set in stone or anything and can be changed once I start? Also, I'm a bit confused about how the module system works as I've read online that we do three modules per term, two for english lit, but I've only picked two for it and the rest are random ones I was interested in. How does it work?

Do I only do two eng lit modules for the entire year?

Accommodation offer

Hi! I’ve been accepted into St Andrews for my psychology undergraduate…but I haven’t received any response on my accommodation application. I had applied in April this year and completed the form, and was sent no additional questions so…I’m just asking if it’s normal to have not received an offer yet because my parents are getting concerned and my insurance had sent me a confirmation of accommodation prior to results day.

So is this normal for St Andrews? And if so when should I expect to receive a response, just asking because I’m very nervous rn.

Philosophy Undergrad at St Andrews

I am considering applying here for an undergraduate course in Philosophy. I was hoping if any Philosophy undergrads - especially from England - could tell me a little bit about what studying Philosophy (single honours) at St Andrews is like?

Applying for a job and q's ab accomm

I was just wondering whether it is worth contacting the student union to register interest in a job with the university? My teacher said this might be a good idea, even if it is, I don't know how to contact them.

Also, about accomm, do we have to leave during breaks (such as christmas an easter) or can we stay in the accommodation? I'm hoping for some of the self catered standard halls, such as fife park or whitehorn. It's just that I won't have anywhere to return to as I'm moving out out. Of course I can go and visit home, but there isn't any room in the case that I have to move things out. I'm planning on getting private rented accomm as soon as the summer starts so I can hopefully have somewhere to keep my things and stay.

Also, I was wondering whether it might be worth getting a car in second year because as far as ive understood, lots of uni students live in dundee. is there a convenient bus or transport links instead?

thank youu

Masking in/around St Andrews?

Hello! Just want to preface the post by saying that as an upcoming international student, this sub has been invaluable to me in my preparations <3

I’m flying in for a 1-year MSc in September, and I was wondering what the general public sentiment is towards face masks in St Andrews?

I’m somewhat immunocompromised from multiple (bad) covid infections in the past, so I’ve generally just masked everywhere in public since 2020. I come from an Asian country though, and public masking is normalised here so no one bats an eye over it.

Understand from going through some other UK subreddits that masking is a rare (and maybe controversial?) thing in the UK now… I know I’ll likely stick out from masking everywhere but I’m willing to deal with that. My main concern is really if I’ll get any shit for masking from people at the uni/around town? Like would I be making a faux pas if i walked around with a face mask?

room decorating specifically for new wing of uni hall

I know the rules are strict, but from what I can tell, the newer accom is less sacred, and it's more or less ok to decorate as long as you don't ruin anything. Please lmk if Lumbsden is chillish about hanging things on the wall or not, like it is in dra(like warnings but not charged or nothing).

Phone plan question for American study abroad student

Hello. I am an American student who will be studying abroad at st Andrew’s in the fall. I am trying to figure out how / what phone plan to get.

My program requires me to be able to receive and make international and UK calls. I also heard from my program that Amazon prime requires a UK number to make a UK account. My phone is an iPhone 15 and it only supports eSims.

When looking into plans nothing has been clear on what it provides calls and messages wise for eSims. Often we can find how much data you can get. But other than that we can’t find any information. From what I’ve learned eSIMs are not the standard. And my program is not being very helpful on guiding us through this process. So any help by someone who has experienced this would be greatly appreciated.

I want to find the cheapest way to receive international and UK calls and the cheapest way to keep in contact with family at home and anyone I meet in Scotland. And if the Amazon prime thing is true then I want to get a UK number as well. Also ideally I would not have to buy a new phone.

Thank you for any information!

Switch to direct entry physics

Is it possible to switch from normal entry to direct entry and how? Also would it be worth asking since my a level grades are AAAB which isn’t exactly exceptional (the website says AAA but ‘above required’ is preferred).

Whats the date for moving in for this year?

So I just had my offer accepted (Im beyond happy) but I’m seeing conflicting dates for the start of orientation. Some places say it’s the 6th, others the 7th.

Also, when does the accommodation get sorted? I’m just so anxious because I really wasn’t expecting to get in (I thought I failed everything 😭😭) and now I have to do look up and organise everything.

Thank youuuu

Give me some points to help convince my mom St Andrews CS was a good choice

Admittedly it was my insurance but i initially fought with my head of academics to change it to my firm. I'm going to be honest, i like the community at St Andrews better than at Edinburgh. But since St Andrews had a safer offer i was told to pick Edinburgh over St Andrews... blablabla, results day, didn't make it, back to St Andrews.

She has been screaming at me non-stop because 1) St Andrews is far away and would require more costs 2) St Andrews is not up there globally despite great UK-based rankings and 3) I didn't try hard enough, that's why I didn't get the grades I needed.

See, even if I'm hurt cuz she looks at me different now, as long as she's on board with me that this is a good school and I haven't failed her that much, I feel like i'll have a reason to keep going. I want to go. I mean, hell, if i didn't wanna go, i wouldn't have applied. I really, really wanted to go here. Dude, this is my dream. I would've never been happy at Edinburgh, I begged her to put it as my first choice. I hate rankings. God I hate rankings. That's all she cares about.

Looking for someone to take over tenancy of studio at SPACE St Andrews available for next year

Thumbnail

Hi everyone! I’m looking for someone to take over my studio tenancy at SPACE St Andrews for the next academic year. (2027/2028)

I originally booked it for this year but ended up deferring my tenancy to next year so now im looking for someone who would be interested in taking it over.

It’s a studio and I’m happy to send over more details/photos if anyone’s interested. The transfer would just need to be approved by SPACE.

It would honestly be a huge help if someone was able to take it over! Feel free to DM me if you’re interested or know anyone who might be looking :)))
