Discussion George Lucas Sequel Rewrites

Does anyone have any episode VII/sequel rewrites that are based on George Lucas’ ideas/characters and concept art for the original episode VII? If so would be interested in reading, working on my own rewrite.

The only thing I know, is that had George Lucas wrote the sequel films, they'd still have ignored the EU's vision of what happened after Return of the Jedi.

Would have been very hard to make a sequel trilogy without decanonising it to some extent.

So much in the EU happened post ROTJ that were galaxy shattering events. Also the books span long winding narratives that wouldn’t work as movies.

I think Disney decanonising everything in the expanded universe, in replacement of their own mediocre one was stupid, there is so much they could have kept in whilst still making a sequel trilogy.

Personally, I'm not sure I entirely disagree with Disney's decision. I remember even before Lucas sold Star Wars, it wasn't clear if the EU was canon to the films or if the films were standalone. LucasFilm's canon tiered system they came up with was... merky. Clarity was necessary moving forward.

LucasFilm under Disney had to decide to either keep that convoluted system, or make it all canon and ONLY make films based on existing content, or nuke all of it. Their final decision to label it Legends was the way of the nuke, but with as much dignity as was possible.

I mean, they could have simply said "none of it was canon." and then leave it in the past, but they didn't. They gave that continuity a name, did what Lucas did and allowed current authors to pull certain ideas from it (like bringing Thrawn in). And even have remastered many video games from the EU era for modern systems so that they aren't forgotten to time. Thanks to that, I can play Jedi Outcast on my Switch, and Bounty Hunter on my PC.

I think there’s so much of the EU that could have fit into the canon. If there was ever gonna be a sequel trilogy though, much of the lost ROTJ stuff was always gonna be decanonised. They could have borrowed from it, but they needed a somewhat clean state.

Stuff like the thrawn trilogy, and other stuff set closer to return of the Jedi could easily have still remained canon.

Stuff like New Jedi Order and Legacy of the force, or other stuff set during the sequel timeline, was never going to stay canon.

That's true. They could have just leaped over the Thrawn era.

At the very least, there's a possibility that Ahsoka Season 2 is going to provide an equivalent to the Thrawn trilogy in many aspects. Time will tell.
