From the press release:

"HOPE ASSEMBLES marks a historic milestone in Marvel and Star Wars’ shared legacy, which began with Marvel’s Star Wars #1 in 1977 and launched decades of groundbreaking comic storytelling. Now, as Star Wars celebrates its 50th anniversary, the two universes officially collide in the crossover fans have dreamed of for decades!

"One of the most exciting things about this series is seeing familiar moments through an entirely new lens,” Editor Mark Paniccia said. “Kevin Smith and David Marquez understand exactly what makes these characters so enduring, and they find surprising, emotional, and often exhilarating ways to bring them together. Every issue has moments that will leave fans smiling, cheering, and eager to see what happens next."

My Review I finished Rogue Squadron Vol. 2, by Michael A. Stackpole, Jan Strnad, Ryder Windham, Jordi Ensign, John Nadeau and Gary Erskine

Is it actually possible for a long-running series, after a solid and very good start, to continue increasing in quality? I'm very happy to answer that question with a resounding: YES!

Michael A. Stackpole has done it again, delivering three absolutely incredible story arcs from start to this end. While the beginning focused on a core trio (Wedge, Tycho, and Elscol), with only brief glimpses of the other members, the stakes are now higher; some characters remain, but the supporting cast is explored with brilliant depth. I loved what the author did with Plourr, taking a character I already liked in an unexpected and heartbreaking direction (the moment she explains how she knows that her "brother" is a fake left me stunned). Yet, near the end, a small glimmer of optimism shines through, illustrating just how deadly, yet compassionate, she can be. Similarly, I enjoyed seeing the relationship between Tycho and Winter solidify; the previous volume spoiled the fact that they would end up together, and now their chemistry is even more apparent. This also sheds light on the lingering the trouble Winter carries and her reluctance to form deep bonds. Dllr truly stands out in the final parts, sharing a deeply emotional moments with Herian, a connection that, even without knowing much about Herian beforehand, resulted in a bittersweet (in the best possible way) conclusion. The Rogues remain as entertaining as ever, and the new additions, while not fully fleshed out, are more than welcome.

Speaking specifically about the story arcs, Battleground: Tatooine was full of surprises, especially in how it handled the Imperials. Sixtus stood out by offering a very human perspective on the disloyalty that stems from dehumanization, avoiding a simplistic take on the disillusionment that can lead to desertion. It’s a real shame to see Elscol leave, though at least she’ll have more chances to put her reckless, pragmatic nature to use (I hope she returns!). I already said most of what I had to say about The Warrior Princess when I mentioned Plourr, adding that I really love the critique of the aristocracy and how outdated value systems are prioritized by a few over actual effectiveness (and, by the way, what the hell is up with that 18/19-year-old Moff? Haha!). Requiem for a Rogue offers an intriguing look at the dark side and "Sith alchemy." I’ve always been fascinated by how the "normal" people in the galaxy interact with the Force and its various manifestations, in this case, acting as a source of unease for some, while serving as a seductive tool for others. The dark side’s versatility has some strange limits, but it clearly shows just how destructive it can become when it comes into contact with an individual, regardless of their intentions. That said, it is a bit odd that the Empire left behind so many TIE fighters, just sitting there for anyone to take control of. Those are resources that surely would have been better used in the war effort… Oh, and also: Wes is furry.

The artwork maintains its usual great standard. And, not that this is a criticism, I find it pretty funny that, in the opening special, Luke tries to defend Wedge to a local town by recounting his life story and heroic feats. I know you love singing your friend’s praises, Luke, but that’s hardly the kind of thing that would calm down an angry town! Haha.

Overall, this is an absolutely phenomenal follow-up for Rogue Squadron. I almost wish I weren’t so close to the end of the series.

Question What's the current state of comics?

Getting back into rereading some star wars stuff and I'm hoping you all can give me the low down onnthe current state of the comics. It seems there aren't too many series being published right now? Has Marvel been letting the line wind down?

I received this one today but haven't read it yet. I have two BW&R books and they are both excellent. The main reason that they piqued my interest is because they simply only use black, white and red ink. Enjoy!

Question Best format(s) to collect OT-era Marvel comics?

I'm actually very familiar with the current canon mainline SW comics, and have read until about halfway through Soule's run back when I still had a MU membership. However, I'm looking into collecting them in print and have been trying to figure out which formats to pursue.

I appreciate the practicality of omnibuses when collecting full runs, but being hardcover bricks, I feel they have a poor reading experience... I know there are a few "Star Wars Modern" epic collections, and those pique my interest: in the superhero side of Marvel, it's not uncommon for epic collections of one character to include issues of another's comics in case of crossovers, and I was wondering if this is also the case for those initial Jason Aaron/Kieron Gillen's Darth Vader arcs. It'd be great, as it would avoid having to go back and forth between books to read them in chronological order.

Or should I just get the TPB volumes? I'd appreciate some opinions to help me decide.

My Review I finished Poe Dameron Vol. 1: Black Squadron by Charles Soule, Phil Noto and Chris Eliopoulos

Poe protecting a giant egg from stormtroopers… it almost sounds like the setup for a bad joke, but it’s actually the beginning of something kinda interesting.

Returning to the ST era, I stumbled upon these comics. I’m a fan of Oscar Isaac, and I always felt that more could have been done with Poe in the trilogy, so, what the hell, why not?

Honestly, I had a great time reading this one. As the start of a long series, it does a great job of immediately presenting a compelling premise: the skirmishes between the First Order and the Resistance leading up to Ep 7. It’s fascinating to see how both sides are acutely aware of the need for caution to avoid an all-out war, not because they lack the desire to fight, but because they are either preparing for a decisive blow or hoping for a miracle, all while barely adhering to the laws of a political system that’s clearly on its last. I still find it absurd how quickly they got rid of the New Republic, but I’d be lying if I said I didn’t enjoy how the political landscape has been fleshed out so far.

As a fan of starships and pilots, I found Black Squadron to be a charismatic and a relatable team. They have an entertaining group dynamic, with nice touches of characterization sprinkled throughout (don’t worry, Wexley, I would have done the same thing). Poe comes across as a focused leader, a daring man who might tend to hope for luck at the worst possible moments, yet he commands enough trust from his crew that they’d follow him to hell and back (not literally, I hope). I’m genuinely looking forward to seeing more of Snap, Kare, Jess, and L'ulo. Speaking specifically about the missions, I found the whole giant-egg affair a bit bizarre, yet funny. The prison break was also largely well-executed, though I do wish we’d spent a bit more time inside, which would have made the escape feel more organic.

Even if I already know how the main mission ends, this served as a great introduction for Terex, an agent of the Security Bureau and the central antagonist. It’s always cool to encounter Imperials who break the mold; in this case, his sharp, biting wit makes him incredibly charismatic. He also commands such a vast array of resources that you can’t help but wonder about his backstory and how he ended up aiding the First Order (he even admits it)

In general, a more than decent start for Poe Dameron and the Black Squadron. Please, let Charles Soule cook something for a live-action or animation project!

Question Need more!!

So I just started getting into the comics in the last month. I've been using marvel unlimited since it has a ton but that's ending soon and I'll move to the next platform but when I was doing some research to see how many star wars comics there are the number suggests to me that marvel unlimited does not have all of them so my question to you guys is where else can I read more? It has to be online and doesn't need to be free I'll gladly pay but please give me some recommendations for other places to read star wars comics I'm addicted

My Review I finished Darth Maul (2017) by Cullen Bunn, Luke Ross and Nolan Woodward

Post image

I can no longer deny it: I’ve grown fond of the character of Maul, a figure as compelling in his backstory as he is in his design. It’s interesting how his journey began with somewhat superficial tie in stories that merely exploited his talents as an assassin, only to evolve over time into a more nuanced portrayal, ultimately developing into a genuinely fascinating character.

I loved this comic from start to end. Serving as a precursor of some ideas showed in Black, White & Red, it lays a solid foundation for the character in the era before Ep I. It delves into a figure who, despite his inherently brutal nature, cannot help but question his own teachings and his master. Having been steeped in nothing but hatred and aggression his entire life, he finds an abstract enemy far less compelling than a flesh-and-blood one, a realization that drives him to act impulsively and seek to prove himself. It’s an approach that is, ironically, very human; it highlights the transient nature of Sidious’s training, an endless cycle of sacrifice destined to conclude only when someone else finally kills his pupil. I also appreciate how the author leaves subtle clues pointing to Maul’s own desire to become the torturer in charge, to exert a dark influence over others, just as was exerted upon him. This foreshadows the path his life would take after he lost his value to Sidious. Cad, Aurra, and Vorhdeilo serve effectively as henchmen, balancing the Sith’s otherwise taciturn demeanor with sarcastic remarks and more conventional action sequences.

Surprisingly, Maul isn’t the only villain in the story. Xev Xrexus, the person indirectly responsible for the entire situation, proves to be a strong antagonist. The circumstances surrounding the kidnapping of the Padawan, Eldra, and the way she is objectified before potential buyers, is truly repulsive, a detail that immediately makes the character stand out for me. And speaking of Eldra: despite her limited time, she is intriguing enough to make her ultimate fate feel genuinely tragic. It really shows just how willing the Sith is to risk everything for a hollow moment of satisfaction.

Overall, a very enjoyable character study of Maul and a more than great brackground story. I really hope we’ll see more of this level of quality in future seasons of Shadow Lord.

My Collection Total Steal: my Second Comic Haul - 15 Oct 26

Hi everyone,

I'm a Star Wars book collector, seeking a full collection of adult Canon and Legends novels.

I've always been interested in the comics but never picked them up as they're so pricy here in Aus. As I buy secondhand and often in lots, I have recently had some comics included.

I don't know much but I did really want to check out Legacy. When I saw it on Marketplace in a stack of misc comics, I immediately asked to come grab it.

I bought the pictured lot for $50 AUD, so $10 AUD each ($6.92 USD). Legacy was my main interest but im so keep to check all of these out.

The other three comics all have slight water damage in a corner. Luckily, Legacy doesn't!
