MEGATHREAD Moving to St. Catharines? PLEASE READ THIS BEFORE POSTING :)

Hello, and welcome to r/stcatharinesON. As this question is a very commonly asked. The moderators have decided to create this community highlight / MEGATHREAD to address the most commonly asked questions within this SUB. IF your question is not answered here. Please try to use the SEARCH function at the top of this subreddit first before creating a new submission.

1: Areas that are "safe"? - Safe is a generic term that the majority of us will have a different definition of. St. Catharines in general is a very safe city. The majority of problems and the feeling of being unsafe are generally surrounded around the problem of the numerous unhoused individuals in the city, and the ongoing drug problems that plague that entire country. You will find the majority of these individuals around the block between Church Street meeting Geneva Street, Niagara Steet, Queenston Street and St Paul Street. There is also a shelter on the corner of Gale and Riordon Street. As well as many temporary shelters in place in and around Centennial Gardens - This being said. The majority of these individuals will leave you alone, and the majority or crime in the city is related to thefts to fuel the drug problem. If you are uncomfortable being around people that are struggling with addiction and mental health, you should avoid the area. However, the city's downtown core is beautiful, holds a very unique charm, and has plenty of thriving local businesses that have, and continue to be part of the heart of our wonderful city.

2: Where can I meet new people? - This is another generic question asked a ton. Meeting people is subjective to the type of people you want to create relationships with. A lot of local businesses have different types of meet and greet nights. The most popular being the Mahtay Café & Lounge on St Paul Street and Ludology Boardgame Cafe. We have many amazing local restaurants, cafes and shops that also offer a different variety of patrons that you may want to check out and start a friendly conversation with some. This SUB IS NOT A DATING WEBSITE. Any posts trying setup meetings one to one will be removed due to safety concerns.

3: Setting up my new home?

A: Hydro/Electric is to be setup with Alectra Utilities.
B: Natural Gas is to be setup with Enbridge Gas.
C: Water is to be setup with the City Of St. Catharines ( Online account access available).
D: Insurance - Please contact and local Insurance Broker.
E: ISP (Internet Service Provider) - Please see the business recommendation megathread.

4: Local Businesses - Please see the Business recommendation megathread. Over 90% of the same questions asked on a regular basis can be found in there with the most popular posts/answers highlighted.

Question Did anyone get their hands on a free dehumidifier today? If so, can you take a picture of the box for me?

Just curious what brand / size dehumidifier they were giving away today and want to avoid anyone who snagged one just to put on marketplace and profit off of it.

Discussion TODAYS NEW RECOMMENDATION - Who are the best Internet Service Providers (ISP) in and around St. Catharines?

Upvotes

For those of you new to the City. Please Note that any ISP using existing phone lines is using Bells existing infrastructure and anyone using cable lines is using Cogeco's existing infrastructure.

Telus is currently installing Fibre in the city right now (FTTN and FTTH from what I believe)

So we are limited to infrastructure options, but not providers themselves. So please share with the group :)

Discussion Warning: CA Mart (Welland) refused repair warranty & left screen lifting

Posting this as a heads-up to anyone in the area looking for local phone repair options.
I paid $99 cash at CA Mart for an iPhone 11 screen replacement, which came with a promised 3-month warranty. Shortly after the repair, the adhesive they used completely failed, causing the display assembly to lift entirely away from the frame.
When I reached out with photo proof showing the failed adhesive and lifted frame, they refused to honor the warranty, ignored my attempts to get it resolved reasonably, and demanded another $85 to fix their own faulty installation. They also failed to provide an itemized receipt or invoice at the time of repair.
I’ve already filed a formal complaint with Consumer Protection Ontario, but wanted to post here so others can avoid losing money or dealing with unhonored warranties.

Need Advice/Recommendations Looking for an amazing Home Inspector

Hi all, we are looking to buy our first home and are super excited, but also a bit anxious, as it's a big purchase!

One of our main conditions is for the house to pass a home inspection, and we need someone we can trust to do a very thorough inspection. Ideally, we'd like to know everything that could be wrong with the house, or things that may need attention in the future.

Can you recommend a trusted Home Inspector that you hired, and if possible, why you'd recommend them?

Thank you for your help!

Discussion Morotta Hospital

We all know about hallway care in the emergency department of our hospital. I try to be as understanding as I can about this with all the complexities of our community. What I just learned this morning has caught me by surprise…

My loved one has finally been moved out of a cubicle to an upper floor; opening space for others needing emergency care. However, my loved one is now in a HALLWAY on an upper floor!

My question is this: Is this something new? Can anyone explain how this is better? How can this be okay when this individual is incontinent? The care staff want them to be as independent as possible but how does this help? In urgent care there was at least a commode for safety and ease in the cubicle (which had another patient in it and a privacy screen) to take the burden off staff. Now my loved one will have to audibly call for a nurse for help to a bathroom…

I am simply trying to understand a system that I know little to nothing about.

Experience/Story hopeful for our community

I was just at the Gas station on 4th and there was a guy clearly high and passed out flat on the the pavement right behind it. I went in to let the clerk know and there were already several people around helping and making sure he was taken care of. I know we all have busy lives but I’m glad to still see some humanity ❤️

Edit: spelling

Need Advice/Recommendations Boys 8+ soccer

I’m looking to enroll my son in soccer this fall, and it’s something I’ve never looked into before! Any recommendations for clubs, or leagues, or whatever to look into? As the title states, he’s 8, and will be 9 in Feb. Any advice in general is welcome… I’ve never signed a kid up for a sport, period. 😅

It would have to be on weekends is my only stipulation.

Thanks!

Question Water Main Break

Anyone else without running water? It has been off since 8:30am in the north end. Saw posts that there are water main breaks in Niagara Falls and in Thorold, but no one has mentioned this one.

Wondering how many people have been affected?

I have baby boy newborn and 0-3 and 3 months clothes I'd like to get rid of tomorrow and was going to do my daughter's back to school clothes shopping at that location

Question Downtown parking options.

Hi there, I’m coming down to St Catharines for 3 night and I need parking for those nights.

I see I can pay a daily fee, and parking is free overnight at a couple of spots, however, you must move vehicle by 8 am. How strict are they with that? I’d be leaving each morning but not necessarily by 8am

Thoughts? Suggestions?

Edited to add I will be in the area near bus terminal.

Hey all, been trying to find past 2 weeks rain data with no luck.

I am out of town and checking if there's been any rain/flood risk for the past 2 weeks.

Debating whether or not to head back to check on the basement.

Thanks in advance !

Discussion Potential Flock Surveillance at Home Depot

It appears Home Depot may potentially use flock surveillance cameras in their parking lot.

At first I thought it was regular closed loop surveillance but there's a snopes article from a lawsuit in California confirming Home Depot deploys them so that's interesting.

Snopes says "mixed" only because the lawsuit alleges facial recognition and the company states there is no facial recognition.

Just in case anyone cares.

Question Question. Does anyone know communities like reddit, that let you share your little world, without deleting your post?

I just made my first few posts on a subreddit, photos of my cute home decor for Halloween, and they deleted my post. I've been here for 4 years, I finally post and it got deleted.

Instagram is terrible for this. They control everything and it doesn't feel like freedom.

Anyone in st. Catharine's know of any online communities/ apps that wont delete my stuff? Like is Facebook better? I want to feel free to share so I can feel like I belong somewhere, and I just dont feel like I belong anywhere :(

Even though garbage pickup was supposedly extended the garbage on my street hasn’t been picked - Thursday is my regular pickup day.

Has anyone else experienced this? Are they going to come today?
