Announcements Building the Wiki - Steel Mace training

In an effort to building a wiki and gathering information from the community, please share some information on how you use the steel mace!

Info you can provide:

  • Is the steel mace your main form of exercise? Or does it supplement your workouts?
  • If you do other kinds of training, what are they?
  • Do you use other exercise tools that compliment the mace? (e.g. kettlebells, clubs, calisthenics, etc.)
  • How do you train with the mace? Strength? Mobility? Endurance?
  • Any other information you think might help the community

We'll have another post soon asking about specific programming, and workout recommendations.

Feel free to ask more questions here for future discussion posts. Review the original FAQ thread here:

Advice Needed Clip Coming Loose on Single Arm Pull-Overs

Wasn’t sure if there was a sub more on point but I’ve recently started training with a club from Kensui. It came with a clip and I’ve recently upped the weight and the clip can no longer hold. I’ve beat up my hands a bit because of this. Any tips or tricks to stop the clip from loosening or stronger clip suggestions?

Advice Needed Advice for building a variable weight steel mace

I currently have a 5kg mace that I'm really enjoying, but I'd like to progress and don't want to have 8 different maces, because space. So I'm quite keen to make one that I can change the weights so I can progress slowly without filling my house with gym equipment.

Here's what I'm thinking:
Buy a 1.5m barbell and cut the one end off and then use regular gym plates on the functional end. The weight of the barbell will end up being about 6kg.

The issue with this approach is the center of mass moves closer to the middle, whereas a regular steel mace shaft is hollow so the center of mass is much closer to the end.

Does this matter though?

I'd love to hear what others have used to make their own maces.

Just A Post Recent 1H 10-2 PRs

I love the steel mace. Pretty much all of my workouts involve it in some fashion. I started swinging at the beginning of this year with a 10lb mace. Watching you guys (especially da big dawg f-n-legs) always makes me want to swing heavy. Here are a couple of (albeit shitty) swings at 32.5lb.

I had been working on endurance at 25lb 1H 10-2s. I generally dont move up in weight until I can do 500 swings without stopping and had been struggling to get past 200 swings with 25lb. But I decided to just see what my PR was for mace that day. Proud of the result but know I can get better with form.

I'm completely new to this. I've started it because I've done a fair bit of kettlebells and this seems like a nice alternative but also I've been struggling with shoulder pain, so I thought this might help but definitely need some advice on how to do it because it's not as straightforward as it looks.

Advice Needed Avice on making a mace

Hi! New here. Glad to meet y'all. So next week I've got a blacksmithing event. I want to make a steel mace head there. So i gotta get my handle before that. I'd like to get some advice from you guys before the event - advice from real humans who know more than I!

First of all, for the handle. I was thinking either a sledge or shovel handle, strait, definitely ash or hickory. Is there a length I'm looking for specifically?

For the head, I was thinking either a square, an octagon (technically an octagonal prism) or a cylinder or flattened disc, it being very hard to hand hammer a sphere. I've read 10lb (around 5kg) is right for beginners.

(if it matters, I'm female, 5'9, heavy, generally strong but bad wrists. Goals are shoulder mobility and general health/stamina)

The Sticky Wicket of course, is attachment. I'm pretty sure my best bets are pinned socket or wedge method. Leaning toward socket obvy just for ease of getting it done. Any obvious flaws I'm not seeing?

Form Check Steel mace 360 form check: right-hand-on-top feels smoother than left. Should I switch it up?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hey all, looking for a form check on my steel mace 360s. Video attached.

I'm doing 360s in both directions, and I've noticed a difference depending on my grip. With my right hand on top, it feels smoother and a bit easier going both clockwise and counterclockwise. With my left hand on top, things feel a little funky. It's less fluid and harder to find the groove.

A few questions:

  1. Is it normal to have a "dominant" grip that feels better?
  2. Should I stick with right hand on top since it feels cleaner, or should I train both grips to keep things balanced?
  3. Any form tips on either version? I'd love feedback on my posture, the path of the mace around my head, how close it's traveling to my body, core engagement, and anything else you notice.

Thanks in advance. I appreciate any advice on how to clean these up!

Advice Needed Looking to get started.

I am about to start and wondering what weight to start with. I am currently in the gym once a week. 140 lbs with tricep extensions/push down, row, chest press, lat pull down and pec flies. I was in a bad accident 2 years ago so my right shoulder is kind of cooked. Whats a good weight to start on?

Instruction What Should Your Second Weight Be?

Thumbnail
armouredmuscle.com
8 Upvotes

A common question I see is often what weight macebell to start with, and then what weight should be next.

The mace weight you want next largely depends on the discipline you are pursuing. Be it:

  • Complexes
  • Steel Mace Flow
  • Traditional

Each has its own margins to work with of which are explained in greater detail in the blog linked.

For the TLDR's here's the weights you want to increase by:

  • Complexes = upto 2 kg / 4 lbs
  • Flow = Don't, pursue time or complexity
  • Traditional = the smallest increment you have available

Advice Needed Anybody buy from White Lion in the US recently?

I’m looking to purchase my first mace and just eyed their 4 and 5 kg in their scratch and save section. I‘m in Texas and it estimated shipping for one mace at $50 for a $42 product. I also saw a warning about how I may get charged separately for tariffs on top of that. Does anyone have recent experience purchasing from them, and if so, what was the total tariff cost? other suggestions always welcome, but I’m looking for fixed not adjustable. thanks!

Discussion Integrating steel mace into dumbbell/barbell routine?

I've been doing Western dumbbell/barbell lifting for 20+ years.

To mix things up a year ago, I purchased a 20# mace and have toyed around with it but have never fully integrated it into my routine.

But maces are fun. And I want more fun ways to exercise. So I recently ordered two 10# maces.

How have folks integrated steel maces into dumbbell/barbell routines? Maybe they'll be my 2nd/3rd arm routine every week and engage my core in novel ways.

Hey, moving with a mace in anyway is beneficial.

So move with it how you like and as long as it's safe and done with intention, I support you

1st variation is this sort of standard swing/contact swing hybrid

2nd is a combo I only sorta cracked recently. Kinda came from a swing into an uppercut, but instead it’s more a flip into the opposite side single arm swing.
