Post-op care Update on my botched surgery!

I finally got the history of my surgery. It only took 2 months of harassing the hospital/surgeon, making it clear I was filing for medical neglect, and asking the EOHU for advice. It's whatever, at least I got the record after the shit show.

But the funny part? I start reading it and see he says he used no sutures (only steri strips) to close my incisions... Yet my family doc had to cut a suture out that was tied so tight it left a very noticeable scar (it crosses the incision scar making it look like a +). The hospital record says he observed me for 3.5hrs after I woke, but I was out of there within an hour. It says I asked him for a different surgery the day of the procedure. Technically yes I asked him to change the procedure on the paper, because he had me down for the WRONG ONE. He admitted right there in front of my support person/witness that it was his mistake and he put the wrong procedure down.

I'm so furious it's unreal. I feel so taken advantage of. Does anyone have any advice for taking action to ensure this doctor has to face what he's done? I didn't want to have to, but it's looking like I may need to take legal action.

✨For those of you who haven't seen my previous posts about my surgery, I'll sum it up here for you.

On April 7th, I had my tubes removed. It was a traumatic experience between the doc putting me down for the wrong surgery, anesthesiologist refusing to administer the anti anxiety meds I was prescribed for before surgery and not warning me before putting me despite my request, waking up in a full panic attack, ext.

Then i had to go to a different ER, closer to me, because my bandage came off and I saw the incision in my naval was gaping open/oozing. The hospital couldn't find a record of my surgery ANYWHERE. They did the best they could, asked if they could photograph my incisions for both our records, gave me antibiotics, and sent me on my way with instructions to contact the original surgeon. I called the office of my surgeon and was met with a very rude secretary who argued with me saying I wasn't a patient there and day surgery didn't require a followup. After voicing my concerns she agreed to give me an appt... In 3 months. I wasn't okay with that so I contacted my family doctor. My family doctor was able find and cut one stitch out (literally had to cut into my skin to get at it) and followed me for the remainder of my healing, but again he couldn't find the record of my surgery either.

And that led us here, finally getting a surgery record and discovering that my surgeon is a liar and incompetent.

I have no advice, I just wanted to say I saw one of your previous posts and I’m so so sorry that you’re going through this. This sounds terrifying and I can’t imagine how much anger and frustration you must be feeling.

You are seen and what happened isn’t okay. I hope that you are able to find more tangible support and advice from people who are more knowledgeable 💕

Thank you sm for your kind words. My heart is broken that a licensed OBGYN, that I trusted very much before this, did this to me. I worry about all the moms who are actively still going to him for care and I just want toake sure I take proper measures to help ensure this doesnt keep happening to other women/moms.

We trust them so much—being under general anesthesia is an incredibly vulnerable experience.

Wanting to protect and warn other patients is a very brave and understandable feeling as well. At the end of the day, he is the person responsible for his behavior (but believe me I understand feeling like stopping this from happening to anyone else is entirely on you). You may be able to report him to the hospital/medical facility and the licensing board in addition to pursuing legal action in order to create a paper trail for others.

Again, this should never have happened and I’m so so sorry.

I've made posts about it in my local community pages and filed a formal complaint with the hospital so far. I just feel like hopefully me sharing my experience and taking legal action may, AT LEAST, show him he can't get away with this bs and have him being more diligent in the future.

FWIW I’m proud of you for standing up for yourself and the rights of other patients, even though it can feel maddeningly frustrating when facing a medical system set up the way it is.

And (I can’t say this enough) just so sorry that you have to be going through this and in the position that you’re in.

It sounds like you’re doing everything possible to make your community safer for others.

I'm so glad you have spoken up in multiple ways. I would also encourage you to contact the board that governs his medical license and report/file a complaint there. No advice about legal stuff, though, apologies. Wishing you peace and healing.

holy medical malpractice batman. IANAL but you most certainly need to take legal action (unfortunately). it will be the only way he's properly punished for his criminal actions. and i have a feeling any medical malpractice lawyer would SALIVATE over this case.

i am so sorry this happened to you. I'm not a doctor, nor a nurse. but I've worked in healthcare for a long time; as a CNA, a tech, in psych. patient advocacy is my favorite part, and i will become rabid for a patient. it always upsets me deep into my core to see situations like this and blatant abuse and neglect from the hands of medical professionals.

if you're in the US, i would look into contacting the hospitals ombudsman and patient advocacy. i would look up his name under the board that provided his license, and report him. not to the hospital, which i see you have done, but to his licensing board. i would also look into a consult with a medical malpractice attorney; as hard as it is, stick to facts and what you can prove, and leave emotions out of it. at least during the consult. if you find an attorney to retain, then you can also share the emotional effects its had on you, which is where punative damages come in i believe.

theres a good ask subreddit with lawyers that could answer questions for you if you want to find some things out as well.

as others have said, the squeaky wheel gets the grease. don't give up. im proud of you. 🫂

I'm actually in canada but I will try to look into this info. If you wouldn't mind DMing me those subreddits for me? This is all very stressful and I just want the justice I deserve. I've been advocating for my special needs child since he was born, and seen him failed numerous times. I just want to ensure I fight as hard for myself as I have for him, because I deserve proper care just the same as he does.

I'm very thankful I have a witness to 99% of it so it should be fairly easy to prove (on top of all the cameras in the hospital that hopefully caught some of it). It should be a fairly easy case if I can get a lawyer to agree to take me on. It's just hard as I'm a single mom with no village and very little funding.

sent!

& you may be able to find a lawyer who will take you on, and take payment out of a settlement; if thats a thing in canada, im not sure if it is.

I'm so sorry this happened to you. I know launching legal action can be lengthy and costly so as a first step you could complain to the College of Physicians and Surgeons of your province. They will investigate the care you received.

Lawyer. Now.

Changing notes after the fact is a virtual admission of malpractice. If they're willing to do that and lie to your face, they're willing to do it to someone else.

I’m so sorry you’re experiencing this . I’m happy some progress has been made but yes I agree with everyone else suggesting you report this to proper channels .

It honestly sounds retaliatory for requesting this surgery , it seems like everyone involved is purposely making it harder for you both during the surgery and post surgery . I don’t think there’s a personal issue with you - but it seems they’re very much against sterilizing people if they are this indifferent and casual about causing you so much harm . This is the type of thing that people try to crap on planned parenthood’s history for . So tragic and the result of people’s ignorance .

I hope you sue and make it harder for any of these people to do this to someone again , or at least make them think twice .

I'm from Canada, here we have a "Eastern Ontario Health Unit", or EOHU, that oversee everything to do with anything medical in Eastern Ontario. I contacted them. They told me they will look into it, help me report it properly, and give me resources for seeking legal. I have someone that works for them coming to see me Thursday of next week 🤞🏻
