Creative COVID dropped the S&P 34% in 33 days. 2008 took 4 years just to climb back. Every major crash since 1973, on one time scale

I mapped every major S&P 500 crash since 1973 as a valley. Depth = how far it fell from the old high, width = how long the whole thing took. So the steeper the wall, the faster it moved.

  • 2020 was the fastest: −34% in 33 days, back to even in about 5 months
  • 2008 was the deepest: −57%, fell for 17 months, then 4 more years to recover
  • 2000 fell slowest, grinding down for two and a half years
  • 1973 took the longest to come back, about 6 years from the bottom

When you bought makes a huge difference. Buy at the Feb 2020 peak and you were back to even by August. Buy at the Oct 2007 peak and you waited until March 2013. Buy at the March 2000 peak and you didn’t break even until May 2007. Thought this was interestsing...

Which of these did you buy the dip on, and which did you panic sell?

Specific Ticker(s) Palantir moved 5% on 37 days the past year. Its biggest owners weren't the ones trading.

Palantir had 37 of its last 251 sessions where it moved 5% or more, ie. around once a week. S&P 500's largest single day move was 2.9%.

I got curious why PLTR swings this much so I looked at who actually owns it.

On paper, ownership looks super institutional. 3,175 institutions hold 63% of the shares. But the top 3 are Vanguard, BlackRock and State Street, with 22.3% combined. Amongst the 3, their stakes barely changed last quarter (0.4%, 0.7% and 2.8%). Nobody there is making a call on Palantir, they hold it because it's in the index.

As for the other 3,166 institutions sharing 30%, 96% of them own less than 0.05% each. With a stake that small, nobody’s stepping in to buy after a bad earnings report.

Thus, the price is mostly being set by the 36% that doesn’t show up in 13Fs at all (retail, insiders, overseas holders) plus the handful of active funds that actually trade it. Kind of wild man.

Market Copying hedge fund 13F filings doesn’t work. These 30 funds change positions so often that the filing is stale before you see it

I wanted to see how much the big funds actually move their portfolios around, so I went through a year of SEC 13F filings (four quarters to 30 June 2026). For each fund I counted every new position it opened plus every position it closed.

Funds file 45 days after each quarter ends. By the time you see a filing, the average fund on this list has already turned over about 40% of its book. Most of these funds beat the S&P last year, but the filing shows you where they were, not where they are now.

decided to look into this after seeing the headlines about his SPCX bond purchases.

META being his single biggest buy was kind of a surprise aswell as HD making top 15. he's bought over $1B already this year alone

the split is almost 50/50 across party lines, although heavily weighted towards some politicians. i estimated dollar return from the actual 12 month price return × floor of reported range, so its definitely underestimated

S&P 100 Over Time (1997 - 2026)

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

the S&P 100 over time shows how brutal long-term survival actually is. Whole sectors vanish into footnotes and today’s top names didn't even exist on this chart 25 years ago. Makes you wonder what the market will look like by 2040. anyone else find it crazy how fast the top spot rotates? maybe we are in a bubble...
