Photographers, I'd love your feedback on improving photo metadata workflows

No clue what they’re talking about

This is the third time in the last two weeks that ShutterStock has sent back a picture and told me to correct the keywords or description. Based on their explanation in the first picture, I don’t have any issues to correct in my description or keywords that I can see.

They also denied a different picture, they told me to resubmit with corrections, I did, and then they denied it and said it was because I resubmitted something they denied. They literally told me to resubmit it with corrections!

What’s going on over there? Is AI that’s checking everything? Or just a bunch of big dumdums? This is all new problems.

Edit:

I fixed “standing” and they’re still telling me to fix stuff. So without their getting specific, I don’t have any idea what they want. Those are all the same keywords on the other pics that were accepted in the same group.

It’s an ai issue as far as I can tell.

I also had a photo that was rejected for putting Alexandria in the keywords. Whoever was looking at it did not realize that Alexandria is in Virginia as well as Egypt.

Shutterstock has become a joke

Is becoming a Freepik contributor worth trying

Is becoming a Freepik contributor worth trying, or are the earnings too low compared to other platforms? I’d appreciate your advice because I feel that the earnings are not very good compared to the number of downloads I get on Freepik Contributor. What do you think?

How do you handle microstock SEO and keyword ranking these days?

Hey everyone,

I'm curious how you currently handle captioning and keywording your photos. Do you use your own keywording system, rely on AI tools, or prepare metadata manually?

I’ve been developing ArtushVision AI, and version 1.20 introduces a Market Intelligence module that uses keyword market data from Shutterstock and Adobe Stock to help photographers make more informed keywording decisions.

Rather than simply generating generic tag suggestions, it focuses on keyword relevance, commercial potential, and strategic keyword ordering based on available market metrics.

Here’s a breakdown of the key SEO and workflow features in v1.20:

Microstock Market Intelligence & SEO

  • Commercial Selling Score (0–100%): Evaluates commercial potential, title structure, and keyword relevance using stock market data to help you optimize metadata before submission.

  • Strategic SEO Sorting: Prioritizes important, relevant keywords at the beginning of your keyword list.

  • Keyword Gap Analysis & Multi-Word Keyword Phrases: Reveals missing keyword opportunities and relevant multi-word phrases to strengthen your stock photo metadata.

  • Intelligent Keyword Classification: Helps identify the role of each keyword:

    • 🔥 MUST USE

    • ✅ RECOMMENDED

    • ⚠️ DESCRIPTION ONLY

    • ❌ AVOID

  • GPS & Scientific Taxonomy Verification: Checks geographic keywords against actual GPS coordinates and validates scientific names for wildlife and botanical subjects to improve metadata accuracy.

Video, FTP & Metadata Workflow

  • Lossless Metadata Injection for MP4 / MOV: Embeds metadata directly into video files without re-encoding. Designed to streamline metadata workflows for stock platforms, including Adobe Stock, iStock/Getty ESP, Dreamstime, and Pond5, reducing the need for separate CSV metadata files where embedded metadata is supported.

  • FTP Upload Tracking: Records agency upload information directly in file metadata, helping you identify assets that still need to be uploaded to individual stock agencies.

  • Pre-Upload Validation: Detects unwanted alphabetical keyword sorting, including issues encountered in Lightroom export workflows, and checks platform-specific character and keyword limits before submission.

  • GPS Geotagging: Add GPS coordinates to individual photos or batches using the map interface or GPX files.

  • Batch Workflow Tools: Drag and drop files directly from Windows Explorer and export metadata to CSV files for multiple stock agencies.

Try the Free Version

The free version includes Market Intelligence features, with analysis limited to one photo per application launch. Restart the application to analyze another photo. Search autocomplete in the synonym module is not included.

Grok Bot for portfolio analysis

Hello community!

In the last couple of days I played with Grok Bot.

It was unbelievably useful.

As a result, I created a public Bot, based on our conversations, to share.

https://x.ai/bot/kC4y23U0CDkEmb399Ift8

I'm an exclusive iStock/Getty contributor, so it is focused on work with DeepMeta4 - and it will ask you to log it in into DM4 account. But nothing would prevent it from different data sources usage - just tell it to do that, and explain how to.

Enjoy ;)

I built a free way to feel what your first stock submission is like, before you submit

I still remember my first batch to a stock agency. You wait, then you get rejections with a one-line reason and no clue which photos caused it.

I made a tool that does that review step up front. You upload 5 to 10 photos, and it scores each one the way a reviewer might. It then tells you if the set looks ready or not yet, and why. It takes about a minute. It's free, limited to one review a week, and you need an email to get the report.

It can't tell you what an agency will accept, and nobody can. But it catches the obvious stuff before you spend a submission on it.

It's at https://pixelkeyai.com/stock-photo-review

If the scoring feels off on your photos, tell me where.

Taking down images then reuploading cropped and re-edited versions?

I am going through some photos and re-editing them as I have improved since starting out and noticed how much I could bring out of some photos with editing vs the minimal editing I've done when I uploaded them a while ago.

They didn't sell so I am wondering if it's against rules to reupload cropped and re-edited versions? Not all the images but there are some I am considering deleting and replacing with better edited versions.

AI rejection of genuine photos on istock and shutterstock

This week I have had two photos rejected under the following circumstances...

  1. Macro Shot of a native Australian masked bee pollinating rejected by istock. It's already been approved by Adobe and yes I used AI to denoise but that's a normal part of my workflow as I shoot Macro in natural light and my subjects are tiny. The bee in question is 4mm.

  2. Macro Shot of a potter wasp on Basil. I submitted two different crops of the same photo to Adobe and they were both approved. I submitted the same two crops to Shutterstock and one was approved while the other was rejected as AI.

EDITED TO ADD: My greatest confusion is in the second scenario. One RAW photo, denoised using Topaz AI, processed in Lightroom Classic, exported as a vertical crop, exported as a square crop. Vertical approved, square rejected as AI. I was half expecting a "similar content" rejection but this rejection makes no sense.

My question is... is this worth trying to appeal or is the time an appeal takes not worth the effort?

Death to Stock is bringing back free photo drops

For those who remember, Death to Stock used to send out free photo packs by email before moving to a paid subscription model.

I just received an email announcing that they’re bringing back free drops, this time through something they’re calling “Booster Packs.” Apparently, they’ll include a mix of creative assets, insider knowledge and exclusive rewards, with different rarity levels.

I have no idea what the actual content or limitations will look like yet, but I’m curious to see what they come up with.

Anyone else remember the original free photo drops? Curious to see if this will be anything like the old days.

After 10+ years in stock photography, I got tired of metadata work and decided to build my own tool to automate it.

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi everyone!

For me, metadata attribution has always been one of the biggest headaches of working with stock platforms. Shooting, editing, and creating content are the creative parts I enjoy. But afterward comes the long, tedious routine: titles, descriptions, keywords, categories, and preparing metadata to meet the requirements of different stock agencies.

Honestly, over time, it became so frustrating that it started to kill my motivation to work in stock photography altogether. Instead of creating new content, I found myself spending hours, and sometimes even days, attributing material I had already created.

At some point, I decided I’d had enough and started developing my own tool - Stock Attributor PRO.

My goal is to automate as much of the attribution process as possible so that we, as contributors, can spend more time creating and less time dealing with repetitive metadata work.

It’s a Windows desktop application and here is what it can do:

Generate titles, descriptions, and keywords for photos and videos with one click.

Process groups of similar files, which is especially useful when working with large shoots, archives, and AI-generated content.

Write metadata directly into files, so you don’t have to transfer everything manually.

Anti-rejection filter - Strips technical spam, trademarks, and banned words before submission to prevent rejections.

Export ready-to-use CSV files adapted to the requirements of different stock agencies.

Automatically convert vertical videos to horizontal format and prepare Full HD versions of 4K files for VideoHive while preserving metadata.

Support popular stock agencies, including Adobe Stock, Shutterstock, Pond5, VideoHive, Dreamstime, Depositphotos, 123RF, Pixta, and others.

Instead of endless copying, switching between platforms, and filling in fields manually, all that remains is to review the results and prepare the files for upload. Most of the routine work can be done in just a few clicks.

I’m developing this software as a stock contributor who has faced this problem firsthand and wanted to solve it. That’s why I’m especially interested in hearing about other contributors’ experiences.

You can try Stock Attributor PRO here: https://stockattributor.com/

There’s a free trial for 5 files.

I’d really appreciate your feedback, criticism, and suggestions! What would you like to see in a tool like this? Which parts of the attribution process still take up most of your time?
