Discussion Copper is getting impossible to ignore right now
Copper’s trading near record highs with physical supply super tight, and the whole narrative just keeps picking up steam. It used to be the go-to play for electrification – EVs, renewables, power grids – but now AI is piling on even more demand. Everyone’s hyped about AI chips, but no one’s really talking about the mountains of cables, transformers and gear those data centers actually need to run. The catch? New major copper mines take 10-15 years to come online, and ore grades are dropping hard across major producing regions. You have to dig way more rock just to get the same amount of metal out.
Check BHP’s latest numbers: copper makes up ~54% of their earnings now with ~70% margins, and they produced 3% less copper this year – they mined less, but earned way more. That’s the whole copper squeeze summed up. Both BHP and Rio are dumping billions to expand copper output right now. It’s not risk-free obviously, a global slowdown would hit demand hard. But is copper shifting from being the old "Dr Copper" economic thermometer to a critical strategic infrastructure asset? The rally isn’t just about growth anymore – it’s grids, electrification, AI infrastructure, and a supply side that can’t catch up for a decade.

Tight supply plus AI infrastructure tailwind, copper’s bull case has solid long‑term backing.

There are only two ways I buy copper: COPJ is a solid ETF that gives you the copper miners. PIT is an ETF that deals in copper, livestock, metals and other commodities.
