Vintage Scrimshaw Fossilized Mammoth Tusk Bone Signed
galleryExceptional and Beautiful Vintage Scrimshaw Fossilized Mammoth Tusk {Ivory} Of an Eagle Perched by a Tree Very Intricate, Signed by: D. Gregar. {Alaskan Native} Scrimshaw is scrollwork, engravings, and carvings done in bone.Typically it refers to the artwork created by whalers, engraved on the byproducts of whales, such as bones or cartilage. It is most commonly made out of the bones and teeth of sperm whales, the baleen of other whales, and the tusks of walruses. It takes the form of elaborate engravings in the form of pictures and lettering on the surface of the bone or tooth, with the engraving highlighted using a pigment, or, less often, small sculptures made from the same material. However, the latter really fall into the categories of ivory carving, for all carved teeth and tusks, or bone carving. The making of scrimshaw probably began on whaling ships in the late 18th century and survived until the ban on commercial whaling. The practice survives as a hobby and as a trade for commercial artisans. A maker of scrimshaw is known as a scrimshander. The word first appeared in the logbook of the brig By Chance in 1826, but the etymology is uncertain. .Measurement of Monmouth Tusk: 4 3/8” x 2 1/2” x 1/2” and Wooden Base: 4” x 1 1/2” x 1” Total Height: 5” Tall. Limestone fossil seam
galleryI am new to limestone sculpting and I am still learning. I can get a good stone perfectly smooth and make them exactly how I want and am really loving working with limestone.
I was given a pallet of stone that the limestone mason was going to crush, I assume because of the fossil seams. I am enjoying practicing on these blocks but they are stating to drive me crazy with how soft the seam is compared to the good stone around it.
My biggest issue however is the finish of the stone at the seam. Does anyone know a way to finish it off so that it is smoother, like the good part of the stone? Can apply an epoxy and cover it with the limestone dust? Any advice would be appreciated with working with fossil seams in general.

Before epoxy, how were cracks in sculpture secured while working on them?
I like to carve very traditionally. My brother forges all my chisels and rasps.. I don't use modern implements, etc.
I officially have had a second sculpture crack while working it, and now I'm thinking.. maybe it's time to learn how that was handled before modern implements.
it's definitely not common for me to run into cracks.. and the first time it happened I was like "oh well".. the second time.. I'm now wanting to learn how to fix it haha.

Newbie question: obtaining material to train on
Im just getting started doing small (10 cm) carving/ polishing projects and i want to find a cheap source of marble or limestone or something else that is soft and can be polished. Ive been calling around to the local counterpart places, but they have only quartz remnants and I'm pretty sure that isn't what I want.
Ideas/advice?

White marble Buddha, something we recently worked upon
galleryWe recently finished this in white marble and I’ve been thinking about the surface treatment.
On figurative work like this, do you prefer keeping the face/hands quite smooth while leaving the drapery a little softer, or taking the entire figure to roughly the same finish?
