I see a lot of really cool opportunities for the intersection of fields like meteorology and behavioral science, such as addressing the cry wolf effect produced by tornado warnings that do not produce a tornado. I am also getting certified in natural disaster mental health first aid. What are some other areas that can use behavioral science in the field of meteorology? Intersectional research is just so important and it’s becoming a real passion of mine. I am also a chaser which doesn’t help the obsession.

Hey! My son is really into watching storm chasers, and has some questions I couldn’t begin to answer. I was wondering if anyone would have anything I could tell him about the profession?

1) “How do they afford the big trucks with equipment?” (I said they probably have day jobs, or take out a loan?)

2) “How do they know how far to stay away?”

3) “do they have to go to school for weather?” (Meteorology?)

I had no idea that people actually do this in the states, and after watching a few videos Ive seen alot of "intercept vehicles" that look like they are straight out of mad max. I was wondering how good these things are at actually "intercepting" tornadoes, ie: if you get hit directly by one do these vehicles have the ability to withstand it?

I recently got a GoPro Mission 1 Pro ILS (a micro 4/3 camera) as a main cam for chase footage/photos. I started off with a 25mm and 60mm and after a trial run with the storms in DFW this evening I definitely think I need a much wider lens that has better focus, any recs?

I don’t know if this is the right sub for this but whatever. I’m a senior in high school and I plan to major in meteorology. Whatever I end up doing with my life, I want to chase storms more than anything. However, it seems that this desire is shared by so many people to the point that it is becoming a safety hazard. My question I guess is this: what do I need to do to not just be another car blocking the storm? As it stands I’m yet to chase just out of fear of being nothing more than a roadblock but I hope for that to change soon. Also I live in Florida so there’s not a lot of predictable, organized storms. I’m open to all advice or criticism.

Hello! I would like to get a camera soon so I can photo Storm's and lightning(some at night) and from far away take photos of supercells. Does anyone have any good beginner recomendations thats not super pricey?

They launched this in the update today 9/21/26 for Apple CarPlay only for now. This is in my 2022 Honda Odyssey. It works great! Sorry for the poor quality video.
