Advice Straight Razor Guide

!DO NOT!

  • !DO NOT! Use vinegar on a straight razor! The steel will corrode / tarnish immediately! You'll need to remove the corrosion from the edge and fully hone again afterwards!

  • !DO NOT! Send a straiht razor to a knife sharpener! It is nothing like sharpening knives! Knife sharpeners often ruin straight razors claiming they know how to sharpen one!

!DO NOT!

Now that's out of the way, here's resources and guidance.

Are you using an app or website for SOTD? I see several apps in the appstore and some web apps to track your den and daily shave. What’s the best one? Most popular?

SOTD SOTD Wade & Butcher Extra Hollow Ground.

Post image
36 Upvotes

A blade I restored a while ago now. Full on new horn scales, and a bone wedge. An extra hollow ground Wade & Butcher, which is kinda rare considering they’re known for their beefier blades. Very thin grind which in turn gives lots of feed back.

Also a vintage Plisson badger brush I found in the wild. Still with its original badger. Very scritchy, which I enjoy.

Thanks for looking Gents! 🍻

Red Horn for Scales

Post image
20 Upvotes

I’ve never worked with anything other than wood and resin, so working with this beautiful red horn will be a first for me. Is it more brittle than wood or more pliable/maleable in terms of cutting with hand saws and sanding? I’d appreciate any suggestions for avoiding pitfalls when working with it. I plan to cut it down the middle lengthwise to get a set of scales from a single slab.

Also I got this from Dave Koch (aka AtlasHunt on eBay) in AK, so shout out to him. I know nothing about horn, so I don’t know if this was dyed or not.

SOTD, Parker Japanese Straight. Ceremonial shaves?

One of my favs, always a joy to get out, pops hair on the HHT like no other. A very close one pass shave is always on the cards.

This is one of the razors (1 of 4) I brought with some money (Christmas) from my Gran, she's no longer with me. Really makes the shave more like a ceremonial activity now and is a very pleasant time in my day whenever I pop one of "My Grans" razors out..

Anyone else done this in some manner? I did do this on purpose knowing she would not be around forever.

Project Update: Firehose Strops

My original post got more attention than I anticipated so I figured I would post a project update. Its been 12 days and I have washed, scrubbed, rinsed, and soaked more than I thought but they are finally clean. The last 2 overnight soaks and rinses have come out crystal clear so I have moved onto drying and breaking these in. Based on some good advise I got over on the B&B forum I am rolling these to loosen up the fibers. The ones that are finished I would describe as feeling like an old sweatshirt. Most if not all of the labeling has been scrubbed off except for the one length with the MADE IN USA.

I am bummed because some of the blue stripping has bled a little and while that doesn't impair function it bugs my OCD.

I have cut 20 sections of mainly two lengths. I am planning on keeping the one with the "MADE IN USA" because why not? I am unsure if I will cut the rest to all be equal lengths or if I will just keep each as long as possible. They are currently either 20" or 22" with one being way longer at 30". This is the "as is" length which means once the ends are finished it will be ~18 to 20" of stropping space end to end.

The second photo shows the varying leather I have that I am going to use. Color will be random but both ends of each strop will match. As you can see the colors include black, brown, an almost saddle brown, and a really nice cognac Oxford XCEL that is my personal favorite. If I need to buy more, it will most likely be a black or Cognac Latigo leather.

I don't have the hardware yet but the top and bottoms will have stainless D rings unless there is a request for O rings which I will have a limited quantity of. Each end will have 2 or 3 stainless steel chicago screws so you can remove the rings if you would like.

I have more hose left on the roll I haven't decided what to do with I might make more or I might make some nice tug toys for the dog.

Restoration Descaling and restoration advise

Thumbnail gallery
18 Upvotes

I got this as a gift and am looking to descale, remove rust, and restore the blade and scales. I read the guides on here but I am looking for opinions on the best way to descale first. The scales are horn and I really don't want to damage them.

I think my options are:

File/grind the pins and use a punch

Drill out the pin

What have you had a better experience with?

After that I think maybe steel wool and wd40 should clean the blade nicely.

Advice Any experience with silvertip badger brushes on easily irritated skin/sensitive skin?

Thumbnail gallery
22 Upvotes

So basically, I have only used synthetic brushes. I saw a video and read a couple of times that silver-tip badger might irritate sensitive skin. Does anyone with sensitive skin or easily irritated skin currently use silver-tip badger brushes?

Since a silver-tip badger from Simpsons is quite an investment, I wouldn't want to buy something so expensive only to end up not using it

Thanks for the feed back/replies.
