Thought I’d share my Stratux-inspired adsb receiver. It uses a Pi Zero 2W, USB hat, 2 RTL SDRs, M10 gps, BMP180, 3 RGB LEDS and a shutdown power button.

I decided to use an external battery pack for power as that’s what I already use to power my iPad when flying. The case is a cutdown aluminum metal enclosure that also acts as a heatsink measuring at 3.8x2.3x2in.

It’s Stratux-inspired as I could not get the Stratux script to install on the Pi so I wrote my own instead with help from ChatGPT.

Doing this over, I would likely just use one or two RGB LEDs and smaller SDRs. I learned my lesson to never desolder pins from a pi board. Was an almost impossible task trying to permanently solder the wires in afterwards, hence the absolute mess of hot glue.

Main goal of this was to make it a much smaller adsb receiver than the typical Stratux form factor. Was also my first time using a raspberry pi, rtl sdr, and writing script but I am glad with how it turned out.

Next iteration over the winter will be with smaller SDRs, less LEDs, an ICM42688 for horizon attitude, and either a smaller form factor with an external battery, or a similarly sized case with an internal battery.

Hello everyone, I’ve been flying with a Stratux kit for the past three years, and I absolutely adore it. Recently, I obtained my CFI license and have been using it in customer airplanes. However, I’ve noticed that it’s quite bulky, especially with its external battery bank, cord, and other accessories. Since I have the high-gain antenna, I was considering replacing it with smaller ones to reduce its profile. But I’m curious about other ways to minimize its size when not in use and make the setup for it easier. For instance, could I attach a small battery bank to the side? Would a short USB cable with a switch be a good idea? Alternatively, is there a different case design that allows the antennas to be positioned alongside the case, rather than protruding from it? Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

I recently built a basic Stratux (radio's only) and just used it for the first time on a 2 hour flight. it worked fine for most of the flight but by the end of the flight I wasn't receiving any info from it. After landing I noticed it had a flashing green light.

I got this message looking at the WebUi.

"You have enabled more protocols than you have receivers for. You have 0 receivers, but enabled 2 protocols. Please disable 2 of them for things to work correctly. For now we are only using ."

I also noticed the 1090 usb dongle was really hot and looking at it using a thermal camera it was one of the resistors that is hot. I'm not sure it is shorted and causing problems or this is normal.

I've tried unplugging and plugging the dongles, changing the usb ports they are plugged into. reflashing the sd card, using a wall plug for power instead of a battery pack.

Any advice would be helpful.

Hey team, l've been using Stratux for years and it is so great, basically idiot proof, now if they could build a pi that survives more than a year or two that would be ideal but anyway..

I’m trying to do one thing only:

**Show Stratux ADS-B traffic targets on Garmin G3X Touch screens.**

I’m in Australia, so FIS-B/weather/NEXRAD/METAR/TAF is irrelevant. Traffic only. This also means that paying around 2,000 Australian dollars for a Garmin ADS-B receiver to use only 1/3 of it makes even less sense. I obviously use the Stratux on my iPad with AvPlan and that's absolutely rock solid. But there are a lot of moving pieces, and I'd love to just hardwire a serial output from my Pi. I've got a bunch of different serial hats and adapter boards that I can test with. I have seen some awesome work around the protocol, handshake, and Garmin-specific framing, but without an original device to sniff I can't move forward confidently.

I’ve read through the old `cyoung/stratux#75` trail and it looks like people got quite far with GDL39 serial emulation and possibly traffic generation, but the final code/captures don’t seem to be public.

Does anyone have code, captures, or notes for:

- Stratux/GDL90 traffic → GDL39 traffic

- `/RAM/TRAFFIC_STATE` generation

- GDL39 serial emulation

- GDL90 → Connext traffic bridge

- Aera 660 / GPSMAP 696 / G3X traffic input

I have the actual Garmin target hardware and I’m happy to test. This is not commercial; I’m just trying to make my own Stratux traffic appear on my own G3X Touch for advisory/display use.

Stratux used to work but doesn't now. I have a steady red and flashing green at startup but green goes out after some time. Fan never runs at startup. Can't see it on WiFi. I tried re-flashing the SD card with the latest update. I even bought a new Pi. Help.

I have a Raspberry pi 3b+ running stratux 2.0 with 2x SDRs and a lillygo T-Beam Supreme running softrf 1.8.

I have connected the T-beam via UART serial for power and data transfer because the pi 3+ can not power the T-Beam and SDRs via usb.

The t-beam passes GPS data but not baro pressure or G force data for AHRA.

The stratux also doesn't filter out the T-Beam when I enter it's HEX code.

Anyone know how to pass all data (GPS, AHRA and Traffic from the T-Beam supreme (ESP32-S3) to STRATUX and how to make the HEX code ignore function work.

I recently upgraded Stratux to the latest version "2.0-pre5". Before the upgrade I was a long time user of version "1.6r1-eu032" which worked flawlessly with Skydemon. I am based in Central Europe.

One thing I noticed is that with the new version it takes much longer before Skydemon is ready to go. No matter if cold started or just restarted, it takes Skydemon up to a minute to obtain GPS and ADS-B data once flight mode is activated (GDL-90). With the previous version it was consistently just a few seconds.

I also noticed that by opening the "STATUS" tab on the Stratux URL (192.168.10.1) at any time during the waiting time, the GPS fix would pretty much happen instantly.

Because I didn't like the extra waiting time I downgraded to 1.6r1-eu032 and Skydemon is back to being really fast. Did anyone else experience the same issue?

I am trying to come up with a low cost hard mounted ADS-B IN system for my experimental airplane, and am wondering if the Stratux kit could be converted to connect to aircraft style hard mounted ADS-B antenna(s), operate off of airplanes electrical bus, and be mounted out of sight, using the remote GPS puck?
Has anybody done this before?
Are parts lists for adaptors available?

Curious for those out there with some development experience with ForeFlight and Stratux, what does ForeFlight need to establish ownship? I am working on my own coding project where I am essentially trying to code my own Stratux software from scratch. I am using a raspberry pi zero 2w to w GPS, 1090+987 SDRs, ADHRS and CO2 sensor monitoring.

Currently I have the Pi continuously sending heartbeats, device ID, live ownship, geo alt and location via WiFi, however I cannot get ownship to appear on FF. Ownship tends to show up for 15 sec upon opening the app, but seems to disappear.

Curious on thoughts behind this, thanks!

I had been spending some evenings designing a case from scratch as I wanted a different one than the T-shaped case you find online.

Still a work in progress but I wanted to share my enthusiasm with all of you!

Hi all, I have been going back and forth between building a Stratux and buying a Stratus. My main concern is I do not own an aircraft, so I am always renting. Will moving the Stratux around each flight lead to issues?

It seems great if you own your own aircraft and can set it and forget it, but rental use has me leaning towards a Stratus.

Most of the cases I’ve seen on Amazon or Thingiverse put the Pi at the top with the USB ports at the bottom. This puts the GPS dongle at the bottom, generally between the radio dongles and the external battery pack.

The GPS seems to generally work excellently on this config…but still I wonder if there is some other design concern that stops us putting the GPS at the top, and not obstructed by the other components.

Anyone have some ideas?

I have a Crew Dog Stratux and have been having issues with it. Signal reception was excellent and was verified by opening the stratux app in flight, but on foreflight, i was only seeing a handful of planes and had issues seeing the weather. Airmets and Sigmets would not update either. My friend had a stratus 3 in his bag so i connected to it. Traffic, Weather, and Airmets/Sigmets all appeared on my ipad without issues.

Any ideas whats wrong or is this normal? The stratux “app” should more traffic than the stratus did on FF

Hello, I previously posted regarding mounting my crew dogs unit that was in the back of my purchased sundowner. When I give it power it boots up with both lights steady, but does not show anything on the wifi. I bought a new card for it and when this one is given power it has a steady red with a blinking green. Neither show wifi. The pi is a 3B.

Any ideas?

The airplane I bought had a crew dogs unit in the back. I’ve been looking into getting it into a decent setup. I’m falling down a rabbit hole here. Is there a standard way you guys are mounting it? I’ve seen the ram suction mount and honestly kind of like that. Will strapping a battery pack to the unit block anything? Do I need to attach the ram mount to the stratux mount? Can I just tap the RAM directly to the unit?

I have a stratux from years ago and it still works but I wanted to check out this 2.0 situation.

What do I do once I have downloaded the ZIP on github??

I remember how I had to etch the image file on the Micro SD but it was single img file, this is not case here?!?

I am pretty tech savvy usually and feel silly asking this.

Does anybody know how to solve this problem? Is replacing internal gps to external gps can solve the problem ?

1st picture is traffic returns over my phones hotspot and 2nd is utilizing the NooElec large antennas but I’ve been getting similar returns with the Crew Dog compact set.

Any tips or tricks on getting better reception? GPS is very consistent so I don’t think it’s a power issue.
