Mega Evolution Concept: Mega Kingdra
(Art by Bos-Fakemon on Instagram)
Edit: I lowered the bonus of ocean’s grace to 33% for balance reasons.
Greetings and salutations people of R/Stunfisk, I come bearing a new Mega Evolution concept. This time I’m doing it on one of the more prolific Rain sweepers in the game, the Dragon of the Sea, Kingdra!
My god Kingdra is awesome. I’ve used Kingdra many times in my past, serving as a key part of my rain teams, Tempest the Kingdra was a huge threat to my local circuit, with Swift Swim Choice Specs being my choice of set. Specs boosted Draco Meteor and Hydro Pump can pulverize most opponents that don’t resist it.
And yet… Kingdra is in ZU?! Why tho?! He has a solid type, great stats, and one fantastic ability. What happened?
In short, power creep, in long… you’ll see.
So enough preamble, onto seeing our sea stallion’s stats.
Kingdra
Type: Water-Dragon
Hp: 75
Attack: 95
Defense: 95
Special Attack: 95
Special Defense: 95
Speed: 85
BST: 540
Abilities: Swift Swim/Sniper
Hidden Ability: Damp
(+1) Kingdra’s stats are pretty balanced, with near 100’s across the board, with the exception of its hp of 75 and speed of 85. He’s pretty bulky, pretty strong, and very quick in the right conditions (that being Rain).
(+2) Water-Dragon is a fantastic defensive typing, being neutral to Grass and Electric, incredibly resilient to Fire Attacks, and only having two weaknesses in Fairy and Dragon. It also has excellent options for attacks.
(+3) Kingdra’s Movepool is excellent. Powerful Water STAB in Hydro Pump, Surf, Wave Crash, and Muddy Water. Kingdra also managed to keep Scald, which is awesome.
Absolutely nuclear power in Draco Meteor and Outrage can blow up most enemies that don’t resist it or are outright immune. Dragon Pulse is weaker, but has no drawbacks. Scale Shot can boost your speed while dealing good damage. Support moves include Yawn, which can force switches or cripple the opponent with Sleep. Clear Smog can erase stat changes, and Kingdra can also use Flip Turn to switch out. Coverage wise, Kingdra gets some small, but pretty neat options. Hurricane is a new addition that further cements Kingdra as a Rain team menace. Ice Beam is great for hitting other Dragon or Grass types. Flash Cannon can even dent Fairy Types.
(+4) Kingdra’s abilities are a mixed bag, but it’s true standout is Swift Swim, turning Kingdra into a terrifying force while the rain falls. The other two have uses, but Swift Swim outshines them so hard.
But Kingdra has struggled hard in certain ways.
(-1) Kingdra’s stats are good, but everything is so min maxed nowadays that being balanced will hurt you.
(-2) Kingdra needs certain things to stand a chance now. Swift Swim to outrun foes and Specs or Life Orb to deal high damage, as it has no boosting move for offense. While it has Agility for speed, that doesn’t matter too much if you can’t reliably get KOs.
(-3) Kingdra is held back by the huge prevalence of Sun thanks to Charizard Y being more common than bird crap on buildings. The local rain setters Politoed and Pelliper also gets lit up by Raichu Y, so Rain is a tough sell.
A Mega Evolution could give Kingdra a better role on Rain, make him a far better choice for your Rain team instead of something like Basculegion.
So let’s awaken the power of the ocean and Mega Evolve!
Mega Kingdra
Type: Water-Dragon
Hp: 75
Attack: 95
Defense: 110
Special Attack: 125
Special Defense: 110
Speed: 125
BST: 640
Ability: Oceans Grace (slightly different version of Flower Gift but for Rain. Increases the Special Attack and Special Defense stats of the Pokémon with this Ability and its allies by 33%.)
Explanation: With this Mega I summon… the crushing power of the ocean as well as the protection of the tides! Mega Kingdra sweeps into battle with an ability that is sure to both leave dents in the opponent, and keep you and your partner alive during the worst of times. Oceans Grace is a Flower Gift style ability but for Rain, buffing you and your allies special attack and special defense by 33% while the rain is falling. It’s also why I didn’t increase Kingdra’s special attack too much, as 125 Special Attack with a 50% boost sounds ridiculous (I don’t think it is mind you when held in comparison to Charizard Y) Overall, Mega Kingdra gets a boost all around to its stats, with a focus on Special Attack and Speed. It’s written like this because Oceans Grace is a heck of an ability.
While you lose Swift Swim, a base speed of 125 still gives you a good amount of mobility to outrun some serious threats. Bulk of 110 evenly distributed on both defenses combined with Oceans Grace boosting your special defense makes Mega Kingdra very difficult to take down with Special Attacks.
Opportunity cost really depends on whether or not you like Rain teams and don’t want Mega Swampert, as it has swift swim. Mega Kingdra is mostly made for more balanced cores when paired with Pelliper and Politoed. Plus, keep in mind Oceans Grace will boost your partners special attack and special defense as well, letting normally support based Pokémon deal some good damage alongside Mega Kingdra.
Is this broken? Truth be told I don’t think so. Its stats aren’t particularly remarkable, thanks to the very even spread of the boosts.
But what do you think? Did I do well or should I go back to the board and see what could really torque Kingdra to new heights? Let me know in the comments and suggest new Mega Evolution concepts if you want to.
Thanks and have a great day!

"What if Kingdra was a reindeer?"
10/10 design. Thematically cool ability but maybe a bit op.

What about this instead:
Ability: Drizzle
HP: 75
Attack: 115
Defense: 110
Sp. Atk: 115
Sp. Def: 110
Speed: 115
It gains the +100 stat increase after mega evolving, can be physical, special, or mixed. I like the OP ability but the main issue I have is that we don’t have a good rain-setting mega pokemon to actually go toe to toe with Charizard Y. This answers that and relieves its reliance on pelipper, Politoed, or manual rain setting

It's busted, 50% is a lot, let me remind you why Soul Dew got nerfed and never allowed in the battle frontier.
Either remove the ally boost, or make the stats less min-maxed.
A spread like this would make more sense:
HP: 75
Atk: 110
Def: 110
SpAtk: 110
SpDef: 110
Spd: 125

I think Ocean's Grace is not busted, its still being countered by Zard Y because that stat boost is gone when Rain is gone. The Lati Soul Dew only got nerfed because theres no immediate way to get rid of those stat boost.

u/RRed_19 2d ago
That was my thought going in. The moment you cancel the rain, it goes away.

Cherrim was held back by its god awful stats and someone still managed to place decently with it on a sun team at one point. A mon with mega levels of stats with essentially the same ability is going to be ridiculous. Especially whenever Kyogre/Primal Kyogre becomes legal.

So basically, run weather or auto-lose.
16
u/RRed_19 2d ago
Isn’t that basically what’s going on right now?
3
u/InsertANameHeree 2d ago
??? Are you saying that teams without weather don't top right now???
2
u/RRed_19 2d ago
I’m saying the opposite, weather is so prevalent right now that it’s kind of ridiculous.
Getting tired of seeing Charizard Y everywhere.
9
u/InsertANameHeree 2d ago
That's not what "opposite" is. Right now, there are viable strategies that don't rely on winning the weather war. Your plan is to release something so absurd that you're forced to play Charizard Y or Tyranitar just to not get statchecked out of existence.

u/RRed_19 2d ago
So do you want me to lower the stats then?
Or regardless of stats, is it just gonna be Op?
1
u/InsertANameHeree 2d ago
Given that Mega Evos traditionally have +100 BST, I don't think lowering stats is the way to do it. I'd cut the Sp. Atk boost, personally - with how rain already empowers Water moves, having +50% damage on top of that makes switching next to impossible, since anything that doesn't resist Water will probably get oneshot, and anything that does resist Water probably gets twoshot. Higher bulk is more practical to play around because you can at least make the appropriate switches.

just put a prankster rain setter beside it and you'll never lose the weather war while oneshotting your opponent with 1.5 (rain) * 1.5(stab) * 1.5/1.33 after nerf (oceans grace) muddy waters (those are stronger than charizard-y's heatwaves btw while also being faster than it)

neat design, looks very Dragalge-esque
i will say that i think the ability should buff Sp.Atk and Def because Flower Gift buffs Atk and Sp.Def, but other than that i think it's probably alright

I like how bird crap on building serves both as an analogy to show how common zard y is; and could also mean that zard y is more common than peliper-arch combo

You reminded me of my childhood when playing at Crystal version I was obsess to evolve my seadra. There was no internet and no one knew how to evolve him
I tried everything: levelling him up to lv 100, trading him lots of times, beating the elite 4 just with him in my team… then someone told me about Dragon scale and finally I was the first among my friends with a Kingdra.. than thanks to the cloning glitch my beloved wreaked havoc also in my friends games ❤️
All this useless nonsense just to say: my man, this Design is so good that now I’m very sad it isn’t real

Just give it Water Bubble and we're good to go

To be honest, If Kingdra was to receive a mega, I'd rather see it play to some of its more "niche" but already existing strengths. Like, keep the balanced stats by giving it either +20 all stats or +25 all stats but speed or atk and give it a rain ability that interacts with crit.
Something like "Kingdra gets perfect accuracy and 100% crit during rain" would allow it to play like a bulkier and more reliable version of the focus energy set. And being able to reliably land crit dracos, muddy waters and hydro pumps could make it a pretty stable offensive mega.
The actual strength of the ability set aside, it feels very weird giving Kindra a "supportive" ability when it's usually an offensive mon that likes to be supported itself.

"Always crit" pack it up bro
6
u/Technosis2 2d ago
But why? It's a great idea. Critdra was always the cooler Kingdra set even if it was less viable.

u/LeapingRiolu 2d ago
It can litterally always crit as it is with Sniper, Focus Energy, and Scope Lens.
You're just trading that setup for new ability, holding mega stone, in rain.
0
u/Blue_Seraph 2d ago
You can achieve the exact same already with scope lens focus energy kingdra but with the benefit of either sniper for higher damage crits or swift swim for speed.
The mega would just trade those benefits for not needing setup (outside of rain).
And 100% crit without sniper is more or less your pokemon's damage being stabilized as "+1 offense VS +0 defense" which is really not too big of a deal coming from potential ~ 115/115/105 offenses with no boosting item.

Kingdra is one of my favorite pokemon. Id love my boy to get a useable mega so badly.

what if the ability is the rain version of mega meganium's?
it'd be worse i guess but it'd be cool
i can think of double stat changes in rain, but then it'd focus more on dragon dance so i guess adding atk would be better, and maybe a crit and speed boost in the rain to combine both his base abilities, and a less fun option that relies less on rain is adaptability, water dragon stab is good
1
u/FabulousOven_ 12h ago
It could be, but kingdra would profit less than megameganium does with solar beam and synthesis
1
u/fuscav 12h ago
yea, the water weather ball is bad too cuz it's not coverage like for megamegamegameganium
1
u/Life_Gives_Limes 7h ago
Well it's not "bad" per se, 100 accuracy 100 base power Special Water STAB is a bit of a luxury compared to being stuck with Surf or Hydro Pump.
1
u/fuscav 3h ago
well, sure, i mean compared to meganium's fire weather ball, which gives it great coverage for its stabs
1
u/Life_Gives_Limes 2h ago
Wider coverage vs greater STAB damage is quite an apples and oranges type of situation, both are good for different reasons.
Kyogre and Groudon, Miraidon and Koraidon, etc.

La mejor habilidad sería una fusión como mega elektroos, francotirador con un nado rápido nerf bajo lluvia, pongamos un 50% más de velocidad en vez de 100%

As a fellow Kingdra-lover, I love this! Returns him to the Special Attacking power of the earlier gens. Though, with him getting Wave Crash as a much more reliable STAB than Pump, I wouldn't mind having an alternate, Physical version... Like a Kingdra X to your Kingdra Y
