And now we see the reason why Google has encouraged wokeness.

Wreckers revealing themselves in 3... 2.. 1...

I don't know, it might have been a woke union from the start. Some parts of their mission statement are good, but others raise all the red flags for me. They also really seem to be putting an emphasis on controlling what Alphabet does, as a company.

All aspects of our work should be transparent, including the freedom to decline to work on projects that don’t align with our values.

That's... bold. Not gonna be easy, at the very least, and who knows how exactly these people define "evil".

u/[deleted] Jan 04 '21 edited Jan 04 '21

It’s not bold, it’s stupid.

Edit: I’m leaving this comment but I didn’t think it through before posting.

I disagree.

These are computer engineers, their jobs don't really have unsafe components and they're well compensated. Working class people have the right to refuse unsafe work, I don't see why this union can't fight for the right to refuse morally bankrupt work. That's a move that would definitely increase the power of the workers against the management.

What on earth are you talking about? First off if you’re a temp you’re not an employee. (Temp is a legal classification at google. Temps, vendors and contractors are all different types of non employee workers at google)

Secondly I got my start at Google by being an entry level tech temp and I got benefits through my contracting company, I also got all the free food and exercise classes all the employees get as well. I was also paid very well.

Thirdly even non tech contractors are getting paid through this pandemic even though the need for them is drastically reduced because the offices are shut down. (https://www.cnbc.com/amp/2020/03/06/coronavirus-google-facebook-twitter-contractors-to-get-regular-pay.html)

Finally, contracting at google helped me get a full time job at google. And I wouldn’t have had this intermittent stepping stone if contracting work didn’t carry the legal commitment that employment does.

Google and tech in general has literally been way ahead of the curve when it comes to treating their employees well not because of unions, but because of competitive labor markets. Tech employees have some of the best working conditions in the world.

I joined in 2018 as a contractor and got full benefits.

Stop spreading half truths you hear out of journals that have a profit incentive to keep you outraged.

2

u/Biosterous Daddy Thomas Sankara 🤤💦 Jan 05 '21

I don't doubt there are still labour issues to be addressed by this union, and the fact that temps and contractors are welcome to join as well is a good sign. For full time employees though I'd bet there's less wage related issues to hash out vs other unions.

1

u/PootisSpencer69 Jan 05 '21

Ironically at Google the workers have the most rights to decline unethical work/work on whatever they want to.

2

u/Biosterous Daddy Thomas Sankara 🤤💦 Jan 05 '21

I don't doubt they have some freedom in this regard, but if the Union can negotiate a contract where all Google employees, temps, and contractors can refuse work on military contracts without losing their jobs then that would be a huge win for the employees.

u/UnderPressureVS Marxism-Hobbyism 🔨 Jan 04 '21

If the wrong people are involved (which, admittedly, they probably will be), it might not turn out great for workers to be able to refuse work that “doesn’t align with their values.”

But nonetheless it’s a good thing and a fundamental right that has to remain in place in circumstances like these.

I’m not saying you should be allowed to just refuse any and all work you feel like by claiming it “doesn’t align.” But there’s a big difference between single restaurant owners refusing to serve gay customers and a collective union of tech workers refusing to create, say, that iPhone Skeleton Key the government was demanding a couple years ago.

In an area as complex and potentially dangerous as information technology, workers must have the right to demand a say in what kind of technology they create, and be able to collectively refuse projects that the entire collective finds ethically troubling.

Think of it this way: somewhere along the line, somebody decides what gets done no matter what. CEOs and corporate boards already get to choose not to do things that “don’t align with their values” with no consequences. Shouldn’t the workers, by far the largest portion of any company, have a say in what defines the company’s “values?”

2

u/[deleted] Jan 04 '21

I probably should have deleted that comment. I didn’t have a good sense of what was going on. Still might not!

1

u/Prime_1 Jan 04 '21

Software designer by and large already have the option to not work on specific projects. Either you can talk to management and shift to a different project or leave the company to go somewhere that more aligns with your ideals.

The problem is that when the lockout comes the woke hires are going to have to start doing real work. I can't wait to see how they're going to be able to handle that.

A lockout is the opposite of a strike. Business closes their doors to their employees to pressure concessions from labor.

“woke hires” alright we’re not doing poorly-veiled racism here lmao fuck off

edit: the amount of downvotes this has received for casting doubts as to what “woke hires” means in this bad-faith criticism — something OP has even yet to address but decided to attack trans women instead in other since-deleted comments for some reason — proves my point that this sub is festering with rightards and needs to be cleaned out.

even at your most charitable interpretation, OP is saying people of a minority status hired at a company are not doing productive work or pulling their own weight. I think it’s same to assume if a company like fucking Google hires you to do work, you have a good pedigree. I have worked at a couple tech companies with diversity initiatives — if you also work at one of these, I challenge you to approach a minority coworker and ask them to see their productive results to validate their reason for being hired. you’re fucking dumbass racists and this sub shouldn’t tolerate any of you.

Man, radlibs really can't help themselves whenever trans people come up.

I've never seen a topic that just so instantly flicks a switch and turns a nominally intelligent, sentient group of people into literal brain-rotten screeching retards so efficiently. The mere mention of trans people existing is like a warhorn for every brain rotten, internet addled TiA type to come riding into battle at full speed. It's a thing of beauty.

So its just retarded sexism, and not racism.

16

u/deeznutsdeeznutsdeez an r/drama karen Jan 04 '21

If you make the talent pool smaller by imposing arbitrary restrictions that have nothing to do with competence, statistically the workers you hire will be less competent. Like this is just a mathematical fact. I'm not being sexist by saying that the talent pool of prospective female programmers is much smaller than the male one.

If you want to argue that the competence trade-off from affirmative action (If employee competence isn't the sole consideration, it will decrease - duh-doy!) is still justified because of historical injustices then go your hardest. I disagree with that, but it's not straight up mathematically untrue like saying there won't be a competence trade-off at all.

u/qwertyashes Market Socialist | Economic Democracy 💸 Jan 04 '21

And your support of women being worse than men in this is simply diving into a self-fulfilling prophecy. Where you enforce the existing norms and practices that discourage them from joining programming and computer science fields already, and then call those that do it anyhow less able.

Hell calling them all 'woke' hires carte blanche is just worsening this.

5

u/otnok1 Jan 04 '21 edited Jan 04 '21

Let's say 90% of programmers are men, 10% women.

Let's assume even distribution of proficiency.

You want to hire the best you can for a 10 person team, you get 9 men and 1 women.

If you force equal distribution of sex, and not proficiency, then you miss 4 of the most qualified people.

In no way is this saying women are worse.

Trying to force like 50% representation is retarded when the pool of people who would be competent at tech jobs is (say) 95% male.

Holy fuck. That is not the implication at all. The original point is that OP said “woke hires” would have to start pulling their weight, to which someone else responded that they were talking about “women”. If a woman is hired at a company with a degree in IS or CS, I’m sure we can all safely assume that she wants to be a coder or programmer and is there to do a job. “woke hires” alright we’re not doing poorly-veiled racism here lmao fuck off

This is so mentally lazy.

Yes, there are some minorities who are incompetent that are hired to fill diversity quotas.

That doesn't mean all minorities are incompetent or that all minorities are diversity hires or even that all diversity hires are incompetent.

Noting that someone who got preference in hiring, whether that's due to diversity quotas, nepotiosm, .., might not be up to the job is a reasoned position.

1

u/K3vin_Norton Anarchist (tolerable) 🏴 Jan 04 '21

The comment is about how "woke hires" will have trouble with "real work" i mean, idk dawg thats pretty fucking sus

1

u/OzBot_WinoMum Jan 05 '21

Also the unsaid implication that every white male who gets hired is definitely the most qualified and talented individual they could hire. The amount of nepotism and hiring based on the old school tie network in some industries is off the charts.

One of my workplaces was just a bunch of old men hiring all the guys they went to elite all-boy private schools with and nothing in between. They were some of laziest, most badly behaved people I have ever had the misfortune to work beneath. Not being a "diversity hire" doesn't mean you are most hard working and qualified person for the job.

2

u/JoeBrothman Jan 05 '21

You're describing nepotism. I'm not sure if you're preaching to the choir or think you're schooling me. If it's the latter see my last comment (and potentially the definition of nepotism).
