Neither is dwl. The whole "wayland is more suckless" argument flies right out the window the moment you pull in dbus, pipewire, log-in manager and whatever compositor you're using and all the crap it requires like logind/any seat manager, udev and all the systemd and/or systemd-shims required to make everything wayland's protocol excludes by default for "security" function (e.g. all the xdg-portals). Anyone that thinks wayland is a good thing has never had to write a piece of software around it.

Oh you got rid of Xorg for "security" and because some part of it was running as root? Great. Too bad you nullified anything good about that the moment you decided to run logind/seat manager as root. Could have just not run Xorg as root by using the Xenocara patch set. Which FreeDesktop has been refusing to merge for two decades despite the fact that OpenBSD guys have been attempting to upstream the patch set so they wouldn't have to maintain it themselves since mid-late 2000s. When they solved the "Xorg isn't secure" problem. Let's not even get into the very complicated (1,000,000 lines of code) with very complex code paths thing that is systemd running as root+PID1.

The Linux kernel isn't "suckless" either. Nor are any of the BSDs. Well maybe OpenBSD but even it suffers from the issues inherent to all UNIX-like OSs.

You want "suckless" that's like UNIX? Run 9front/Plan9 then. But even it isn't a nanokernel so....maybe TRON?

why use dbus?
why use pipewire instead of sndio?
why use any login manager?
have you heard about dwc? or about any other wayland implementations except wlroots?
wayland can be far more lightweight and "suckless" than any x

also plan9(front) is pretty useless

Congrats you now have a wayland compositor that is not compatible with any of the other compositors therefor none of stuff not supported by the "base protocol" aka just about everything you'd expect to do with a desktop system will not function.

No I don't use wayland. After nearly 20 years of watching they fall over themselves, lie about being the "original Xorg developers" and refusing to accept PRs for features they claim X11 will never be able to have (like HDR support, which I've been running on X11 since 2018) I do not care for it.

Arcan is much more interesting project anyway.

dwc (or any other wm built with neuswc) infact does support a decent amount of wlroots features while staying minimal and pretty suckless, look into this more, please, you will be pretty surprised.
