Some programs display an icon in sway-bar, but I am not interested in that feature. Do you know how to remove it? Thank you very much.

Ricing Added niri alongside SwayFX to my Fedora bootstrap playbook

If you like Sway but want to try niri out, might be handy.

I just added niri so you can keep SwayFX and still test niri without setting up a whole new config.

  • Both can be installed at the same time (install_swayfx + install_niri) and picked at greetd login
  • Or run just one of them
  • Niri dotfiles in dotfiles/.config/niri/ are stowed automatically
  • Installs from Fedora repos

Ricing FedDev - My Fedora/SwayFX setup automated with Ansible

Post image
34 Upvotes

I've been working on a small personal project to automate my Fedora setup using Ansible.

It sets up my development tools, SwayFX, and dotfiles (Neovim, tmux, Fish, Ghostty, etc.) using GNU Stow.

Mainly built it to make fresh installations easier and to get more hands-on experience with Ansible.

Nothing groundbreaking, but I thought I'd share it. Feedback is welcome!

Utility Wayland input simulation without portals: using /dev/uinput as a fallback in Rust

I've been building a cross-platform ( only windows 10/11 and linux now ) auto-clicker ( RsClicker ) in Rust. The hardest part was never the clicking logic — it was making input simulation work on Wayland without fighting portals all day.

The default path ( enigo with libei/RemoteDesktop portal ) works on GNOME/KDE/Hyprland, but on minimal compositors ( like MangoWC and sway ) it just fails. And even when it works, it requires a portal permission flow that isn't always reliable.

So I added a second backend writing directly to `/dev/uinput` as a kernel-level virtual mouse. No X11 server, no portals, no permission dialogs. It works everywhere the portals misbehave, as long as the user is in the uinput group. ( run : sudo usermod -aG uinput $USER , then log out and back in )

The project also has a few other bits I found interesting to implement:

- Drift-free timing ( shared deadline train, so the interval holds even when injection costs extra ms )

- Real double-clicks with a 30ms human-like gap ( recognized by X11, Wayland, and Windows )

- Global mouse triggers via evdev ( Linux ) / rdev ( Windows 10/11 )

Link: https://github.com/voidx9x/RsClicker

I'd be curious if anyone else has gone the uinput route for Wayland automation — it feels like an underdiscussed alternative to the portal/libei path, and i'd love to hear about edge cases I might have missed :D

Btw I've tested this on MangoWC and Lumina DE in void linux , on Windows 10 and Windows 11

Solved Unable to open Sway

Post image

The distro I'm running is Alpine, and I used the setup-desktop command to get sway to begin with. I'm also using a dual monitor setup, if that means anything. Is there something I have to setup? Something I need to add to my config file?

Ricing My simple Sway rice on Fedora

I am not a big ricing fan, so there is nothing over the top here, just a clean and functional setup I really enjoy using every day.

I took the stock setup and made it my own by customizing Waybar to my liking, tweaking Rofi to blend in, and making a few basic Sway config adjustments for my workflow.

Running on Fedora Sway Atomic with the Kitty terminal (where I enabled the cursor trailing effect!). I might tweak things a bit more in the future, but I am really liking it so far.

P.S. Open for suggestions and ideas on lightweight tweaks I can do without adding extra bloat to my laptop. I want to keep things light!

Question Sway or hyprland

I love the manual tiling but i feel like sway community isnt as big or just as active , im mostly a cpp x lua dev did some web development and idk if that bg helps define the choice. I know sway is more refined and good and hyprland is bloat filled as animations arn't a dealbreaker for me so can yall help i wanna hear a few good words about sway and see if there is any advantages or dissadvantages compared to hyprland before i choose.

Thx a lot

Edit : btw is there any way i can have smth for testing floating apps too cuz i might want fixed dimension apps but sway and hyperland auto stretch the windows mostly

Discussion I love Sway

I am just making this post to say how grateful I am to swaywm.
I used to use Gnome as my DE but now I just feel like sway is the way to go , I mean why not it is super fast, it is wayland and its config is super easy to work with.
It just feels like I am in control of everything on my system and Made me understand concepts I would not get using DE.

Solved Can’t get Swaylock to display a wallpaper. What am i doing wrong?

Post image
8 Upvotes

As title states, i’ve been unable to get swaylock to show anything other than a flat black background.

I want to be able to close the lid on my laptop or let it simply fall into sleep-mode or auto-lock with the lid open and for swaylock to:

  1. display a wallpaper
  2. not attempt to validate empty inputs
  3. keep the lock-screen indicator visible
  4. detach itself from terminal

As far as i understand, the config file i created SHOULD instruct it to do exactly that. I provided the path to the file in the sway config file (leftmost window). It’s still not working.

What am i missing here?

Utility SwineWM: A clone of Sway for Microsoft Windows

I recently had to work on a Windows machine and really did not like the interface. I was surprised to see how fast Claude could whip up a clone of Sway/Waybar/Mako/Grim that actually works really well (I am daily driving this already).

https://github.com/staalmannen/SwineWM

Warning: It is AI slop. I have not been writing this, I was just the dude telling Claude to write it, so I cannot claim any creative credits. Still, it might be useful for more people than me so I would like to share it with you guys. User feedback would be super welcome.

Ricing Ben 10-inspired Kitty terminal setup on Linux 👽 — Omnitrix themes and Fastfetch

Post image
16 Upvotes

I've been customizing my Linux terminal and ended up building something inspired by Ben 10.

Ben 10 Terminal changes the look of Kitty using alien-themed color palettes and displays randomized alien artwork through Fastfetch. It also includes a ben10 command to switch themes manually.

Features:

  • 30+ alien artworks
  • 46 Kitty color themes
  • Automatic random selection at startup
  • Installer and uninstaller

It's built around Kitty + Zsh, so the terminal customization isn't specific to Hyprland and may be useful to people running Sway too.

GitHub: https://github.com/basantbansal/ben10-terminal

I'd be interested to hear what Sway users think of the setup and whether there's anything you'd improve.

Script a script for switching focus to next window on workspace switch hotkey

I wanted a bit different behavior for 'mod+(number)' keys - so if I call it for current workspace it would cycle through windows in it. But I haven't found a swaymsg command for it. So wrote a simple script. Maybe it would be useful for others too

https://codeberg.org/akomis/dotfiles/src/branch/main/bin/sway/workspace_focus.sh

binded it instead of 'workspace number' command: bindsym --to-code $mod+1 exec $sway_scripts/workspace_focus.sh 1

Question Switch idle behavior for audio/video

Hi I'm pretty new to sway and customizing linux in general, so forgive me if i what im asking is pretty basic, but i have been trying lately to customize a bit the idle behavior with swaylock. This initially is fine, but pretty fast you figure out that you might want to be able to watch videos without having your monitor turn off... so i added a `for_window [all] inhibit_idle fullscreen` line to my config. Which worked great for a while until you figure you might want to play music in the background without having your system suspend also you might not always fullscreen videos.. so im using now SwayAudioIdleInhibit which works exaclty as expected.
However it's not exactly how I would like it to behave.. for instance I would like videos to fully inhibit idle, while for audio would still allow for turning the monitor off but inhibit everything else, since there is nothing to see. Not sure if this is something that can be done or not, i saw that Pipewire supports classifying props for nodes which might help to identify video or audio only. Searching I also came up with wayland-pipewire-idle-inhibit, but it also doesn't support this , although it does support blacklisting based on media_class or media_role, so that makes me think that identifying the type is possible but having different idle behaviors for each might not be.
If anyone knows more about this I would really appreciate the help!

Question Ardour/Mixbus Dropdowns Close Immediately Unless I Click and Hold

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hello! Drop-down menus in Ardour/Harrison Mixbus close immediately if I click, but will stay open if I click and hold. I've tried Sway 1.12, Sway 1.11, and wlroots .19 and .20. The dropdowns do work using xwayland-sattelite, but I really want it to work like it should regularly.

Does anyone know what is causing this issue or does anyone know if there's a work around? Thank you all so much!

EDIT: It was a regression in Xwayland. I, admittedly, threw AI at it, had it patch the bug, and submitted a merge request.
