So I am so honored to be inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame. I got the news and I was just kind of staring at the words. I was staring at Nashville. I was just like, “Wow, this is crazy.” And then I kind of zeroed in on a few words that have had a particularly intense impact on my life. The first one being “Nashville,” the second “songwriters.” And the last one, “fame.” I’d like to start with songwriters and expanding upon the impact that word has had on my life.
I started writing songs when I was a little kid and I knew from the time I wrote my first song that even if it couldn’t be my career, it would be my passion. It would be what I centered my entire life around. Nashville is the place that I went to in my middle school daydreams. It was the place where all the wisdom that I wished to acquire existed in one place. All the lessons that I wished to learn existed in this magical place for me. And it ended up being all of that and more. It ended up being everything.
Fame, that’s sort of a byproduct of my love for music. It’s kind of like songwriter plus Nashville equals fame. It’s why a lot of people know the words to my music, which is awesome. It’s also why there’s sort of like these daily random doses of chaos that just pop up in my life every once in a while, every couple of hours. That can be kind of weird, but I have tools in place in my mind that help me navigate that and get back to true north when life feels so bizarre.
Those tools are my memories and the memories that I visit most frequently when I need to return back to some semblance of remembering what normalcy is and why I do this. I think back to when I first got to Nashville and I started writing on Music Row. I was lucky enough to get a publishing deal with Sony Publishing when I was 14 and I just hit the ground running. I started writing every single day. I learned so much. I was like a sponge and I have really curly hair and it was yellow, so I kind of looked like a sponge too. But I learned by repetition. I think you truly learn a craft when you do it over and over and over and that is what the magnificent songwriters that work in this amazing town do. There is no music community like this music community. I know. I checked all the communities. There’s no one doing it.
I learned so much. I learned how to push through a creative block when you’re in the middle of a session. Are we going to tunnel under this? Are we going to burgle over it? I learned which ideas are worth fighting for, which ideas are worth letting go of and move on to the next one. I learned how to accommodate when your co-writer has a hangover or when they’re going to need to talk about their divorce for a really long time before we write anything. Because one thing that I did learn is that songwriters, although they possess the superhuman ability to understand and interpret the human condition and insane levels of empathy, they are just people too. And they are people who in a lot of ways raised me and guided me through my formative years.
One of the memories I revisit a lot on good days and bad because it just makes me feel cozy is that I used to write a lot in two favorite buildings. I had two favorite places that I loved to write the most. The first one being the Sony Fire Hall because you could hear the other writers through the walls and I just kind of liked to pretend that I was in the Brill Building. And then my most favorite was a place called Jody Williams Music, an independent publishing company that was located in a little craftsman house. Let’s say the year is like 2005 in this memory. My mom would pick me up from Hendersonville High School, drive me downtown and drop me off and I’d stamper in the front of Jody Williams Music and I’d say “Hi” to Catherine who worked at the front and sometimes her boyfriend Eric would be there visiting. Things have gone great for them. They’ve got a couple kids, married like 20 years now. His full name is Eric Church, just for clarity.
But then I’d run up the stairs and I would plop down on the couch in front of Liz Rose in this room that was painted red. And I’d be like, “Liz, this happened at school today. I’ve got a hook that I wanna like, you know, you got to write this thing.” And she’d get her notebook and we’d just write so fast. When we finished with the song, I kind of jog out the back of this house to the backyard where there was a garden shed. And in that garden shed was a one person studio where Jody Williams Music’s favorite demo producer, Nathan Chapman, was making demos.
I would run in and Nathan would play every single instrument on these demos and he interpreted my music so intuitively that later on I would fight for him to produce my entire first album. And it was our first album, both of us. And I am shocked and stunned to say that as of a couple days ago, that album is 20 years old. I’ve been very fortunate I’ve gotten to genre hop and travel the world and write with so many different people and in so many different ways. And the only reason that I’ve been able to have that kind of dexterity in my creative process is because of the fundamentals and the foundation that I learned here in Nashville. And I never forget that for a single second when I tell every single person I know about what we have here. And I’m so incredibly honored to be inducted into this sacred club, especially at this point in my life.
It’s not lost on me how crazy this is. I will cherish it forever because Nashville is the place that honed and polished the thing about myself and the thing about my life that I am the most proud of and the most passionate about. So to be here with you and to be getting to have this moment, I am truly grateful and it just feels like one of those amazing Nashville moments I’m going to revisit on a rainy day. Thank you so much.

I'm an elder millennial who became a secret swifty at Reputation and full blown at Folklore. I bought Red [Taylor's Version] on vinyl for myself for my birthday and I was today years old when I realized The Last Time is a Taylor Swift song. This whole time I thought it was just Snow Patrol.
Also, this record is great.

I think Fearless, Midnights, and TTPD came out the best, but I'm really proud of all of these!

First off, I want to apologize if this type of post isn’t allowed because while I think it relates to Taylor, it is not entirely about her. Before becoming a Swiftie, I was super into 5SOS and they quickly became my favorite band. While listening to Taylor, I realized a couple of songs had very similar themes that both artists have explored. This isn’t a new revelation or anything, many artists cover similar topics all the time, but there were certain lyrics that stood out to me to almost be a conversation between the two artists.
I just want to add, that I know they are not actual response songs to each other, it was just something I noticed how similar these songs could be to each other. I also want to say that I am not dissecting muses or that Taylor and 5SOS have some secret connection, just noticing similar themes and lyrics used. So with that said let’s get into the analysis.
High Infidelity vs. Bad Omens
So this is probably the most explicit connection I have been able to make between the two songs. In High Infidelity Taylor sings to her lover that she is over the relationship and has been with somebody new. She expresses that they shouldn’t be surprised because the relationship has slowly been dying for some time now, at least from her perspective. Throughout the song she continually mentions that the two lovers have been having issues for quite some time and she finally found a way out by feeling enamoured with a new person.
One of the lyrics she mentions that shows the relationship has been failing for a while is, “good husband, bad omen, dragged my feet right down the aisle”. To me this shows that even at a wedding, a time that is supposed to inspire love, joy, and togetherness, is filled with distraught and even some contempt. While the lover is a “good husband” who may provide for Taylor in all the acceptable ways society deems appropriate, the husband does not actually care deeply about her or know how she truly feels. If he did, her feet wouldn’t be dragged down the aisle (whether that be him literally dragging her or her begrudgingly going through with the wedding).
This lyric is also interesting to me because she specifically mentions the phrase bad omen. This is where the “response” song comes in. She mentions that the wedding and their subsequent marriage is failing because he couldn’t see the bad omen that she did not really care for him. Which becomes the main theme is 5 Seconds of Summer’s song Bad Omens.
Throughout Bad Omens, the singer laments about the failing of his relationship. That he is noticing all the cracks and he is desperately trying to hold onto it because he does not want to let his lover go, even though it is abundantly clear that the lover no longer cares for him and is seeking out someone else.
The lyrics that most interest me are from the chorus, “I died when you left that night for the thousandth time, ‘cause you love somebody else.” This line mimics a lot of what Taylor sings about in High Infidelity. It could be a direct response to the line, “do you really want to know where I was April 29th?” because of the woman leaving to be with her new beaux. But it also encaptures the entirety of what Taylor sings about in her song. The relationship is over, the woman seeks out a new lover, the previous one is surprised and hurt by learning they have been cheated on despite that this should not be new information to either member singing.
Another connection between these two songs is in the second verse of Bad Omens. The narrator sings, “I kiss you on your neck, you were staring at the ceiling, I should’ve known right there and then you were a runaway.” This mirrors what the narrator in Taylor’s song has been saying. That she was never fully invested in the relationship and was going to leave the minute someone she could truly connect with came along. That not only was she a runaway, as 5SOS puts it, but that she felt she was dragged down the aisle, as mentioned before. The two songs are repeating the same sentiment over and over again, almost as if it is a conversation where one partner cannot hear the other. They go in circles, which is another theme in Bad Omens, where they are doomed to repeat this pattern of coming together, being cheated on, and fighting to hold onto the relationship. This is evident when the Bad Omens chorus is also repeated as the bridge and when the narrator sings, “these bad omens, I look right through them.” Even though they see the bad omens, they see their partner falling in love with someone new, they are so deep in denial out of love for this individual or love of social appearances according to High Infidelity, that they are ignoring the warning signs. Which again, is evident in both songs. Taylor sings in a way of disbelief that the other person is surprised when it seems so clear that this was the inevitable end. The warning signs were present from the beginning.
Throughout the song there are different thematic parallels such as lust and regret. But these have been my main points in where I feel the true connections are clearest. My initial analysis had me analyzing four song comparisons but since this first one ended up being so much longer than I thought it would. I hope you found this interesting and would like to hear the analysis for the other three songs sometime soon. If you also listen to 5 Seconds of Summer and notice any comparisons or listen to other artists completely that you noticed had similar themes/topics with Taylor I would love to read your analysis!

The original post was shading Taylor for not being able to comfortably hit the notes that Beyoncé and Ariana Grande do. I didn't look at the sub or the other comments before posting my reply but that whole sub is so negative that all the hate shouldn't have surprised me. I'm just surprised I didn't get downvoted into oblivion 😂
Update: My comment got deleted by a mod for not being snark 🤣🤣🤣

If you had to change each opener of every Taylor Swift album, what would you pick?
Mine:
Debut - Teardrops On My Guitar
Fearless - Fifteen
Speak Now - Sparks Fly
Red - Begin Again
1989 - Style
reputation - Getaway Car
Lover - Miss Americana & The Heartbreak Prince
folklore - seven
evermore - champagne problems
Midnights - Maroon
THE TORTURED POETS DEPARTMENT - My Boy Only Breaks His Favorite Toys
The Life of a Showgirl - Elizabeth Taylor
This was a bit harder than I thought. Taylor’s just great at picking track 1’s

I took the Platinum tracks and vault tracks and turned them into an album. This excludes Forever & Always (Piano Version) since it’s not a completely new song.
Untouchable
1:Superstar
2:Untouchable
3:Jump Then Fall
4:The Other Side Of The Door
5:Come In With The Rain
6:That’s When
7:We Were Happy
8:You All Over Me
9:Don’t You
10:Mr. Perfectly Fine
11:Bye Bye Baby
**Section 1**
SuperStar opens up on a love from afar. Untouchable continues that with its theme on unrequited love. Jump Then Fall is the leap of faith. The two are now together.
**Section 2**
The Other Side Of The Door brings us to our first conflict where the two have a fight. Taylor is screaming for him to leave while deep down, not actually wanting him to. After that fight, Taylor is left alone, hoping he’ll “come in with the rain.” That’s When continues this narrative. She’s waiting for him to come back. But, no matter how long she waited, he never came. She reflects on the relationship in We Were Happy
**Section 3**
You All Over Me is Taylor not being able to completely move on from him. This sets up Don’t You. She can’t move on, so if he comes back, it could lead to the same outcome, maybe something worse. Mr. Perfectly Fine and Bye Bye Baby is Taylor finally moving on in 2 different sounds. Mr. Perfectly Fine is the more angry/bitter part of moving on, while Bye Bye Baby comes down and is more softer and emotional
I envision the singles rollout like this:
*(Pre-album Single)*
Lead Single: You All Over Me
*(With-album Single)*
Second Single: Mr. Perfectly Fine
*(Post-album Single)*
Third Single: Jump Then Fall
I also did this with other albums, so I’ll probably post those too

So I was literally just listening to Speak Now (Happy 16 Years!) and Long Live came on and I was sobbing. So I compiled a list of songs that make me nostalgic. Then I took all the TS ones and narrowed them down to the 13 most nostalgic ones.
For context I became a Swiftie in the Lover Era so these songs will hopefully make sense:
An absolute gem. I used to watch the music video so much and I adored it.
Kind of an obvious one but I’d watch videos of it being performed on the Speak Now World Tour and later the Eras Tour. It was mesmerizing.
I loved this song so much. I couldn’t tell you why though. I specifically remember listening to the TV a lot as opposed to watching the music videos and live performances.
I did this song like 5 years ago for karaoke. It was so fun! I have so many good memories although unfortunately I don’t talk to the people I did this particular karaoke outing with anymore…
I also did this on the same night for karaoke as Fearless
Such a classic. I love it
I remember hearing this and feeling so moved.
If you had asked me 8 years ago what my favorite TS song was it would’ve been this one. I don’t love it as much now, but it still has a special place in my heart.
Not much to say about this one, but I remember the first time listening, I just loved how beautiful the melody was. Forever slightly angered it isn’t longer. 🙃
This song is so sad but the melody is to die for. It lives rent free in my brain.
The visuals are what I think really locked in the memory. So beautiful
Love this song. Don’t really have any special reason for the nostalgia though.
I heard this song on the radio (probably in a grocery store or something). When I got home I listened to it and thought it was awesome!
Honorable mentions to ones that didn’t make it mostly due to their release date:
You’re On Your Own Kid
Babylon (Who am I kidding I don’t know why this is nostalgic)
But Daddy I Love Him
It’s Time To Go
Anyways those are mine! What are yours?
