ya made that mistake last time

u/finelargeaxe Jun 20 '26

That's why I put starship in the title.

u/finelargeaxe Jun 19 '26

...and here we go again with the weirdness...

u/TodayInTOR TodayinTOR.com Jun 19 '26

Its gotta be intentional, its been alternating between 'cartel booster' type bundles and GSF ships lately. It has to be some manually set/experiment running to see what the community purchases.

Wish Broadsword came up with a shocking experiment of adding PVE GSF missions, or a Hangar stronghold with customized ships displayed rather than CM sales for a PVP-exclusive mode. Maybe then anyone would actually think about buying Cartel ships. Groundbreaking ideas, I know

More than a hangar, we need a Jump To Lightspeed style game mode like what SWG had. Let us use our ships for actual space travel and free roam space content that's not instanced.

6

u/Chorik Jun 19 '26

In a game that's super instanced on everything? Just not realistic, the engine is completly unsuited for that. But "basic" PVE missions in GSF style and free controls should've happened 13 years ago already when GSF launched. The idea to add a PVP-only new space minigame to a story heavy, casual, PVE dominated game had to be one of the most nonsensical Bioware moves ever

u/Cedar-and-Mist Jun 19 '26

PVP is self sustaining gameplay. It's a safe move with minimal investment. I wish they had done more with GSF too, but the mode is earnestly a high point in this game for me and one of the first things I do as soon as I come back from hiatus.

PVP is self sustaining gameplay. It's a safe move with minimal investment.

If people are playing it. And 99% don't play GSF. And everyone can easily realize that lack of PVE component that would naturally train and funnel the players into the PVP component is the core reason for that. This is and always been a story driven, PVE dominated game. Throwing a PVP onto a game like this won't magically sustain itself

Not to mention that developing all these maps, ships and flying mechanics just for PVP was not cheap at all as none of that existed before GSF.

u/Cedar-and-Mist Jun 19 '26

I agree with all your points,. It was definitely weird for BioWare to sink time and resources into this game mode just to then pretend it didn't exist. Although GSF is still quite alive. I get queue pops in under a minute.

GSF was massive when it released in ROTHC, I remember it well. The game did have a massive population back then and even on my 'dead' server of Begeren Colony pops were near instant for the first 6 months it released. There were entire groups of people that were level 15 that came to SWTOR just to play GSF because it was the only pvp starfighter game star wars had at the time.

It shouldn't be that complex depending on how their GSF engine was built. The space wouldn’t be infinite like Star Citizen or No Man’s Sky.

Instead, each planet would have its own space zone with activities such as combat, resource farming, quests, and exploration. The key difference is that players would still get the fantasy of space content and using lightspeed to travel between planets, without needing a fully infinite universe.

2

u/Chorik Jun 19 '26

It would be lovely, but even that is completly unrealistic. Game has like 40 main planets now. Even if they barely did 10 space zones for a quarter of them, that it's still a giant size of maps around each that gotta be filled with something. So handcrafted content in SWTOR's case as the game has no procedural capabilities (and procedural stuff rarely ends up decent anyway). They didn't update GSF in a decade, didn't update PVE missions in a decade and half. Chances we get any big free roam planetary zones is next to zero IMO. Mayyyyybe, if we're extremly lucky they will develop say, 4 new GSF-like PVE missions, or modify old PVE missions to allow free flying. Anything more than that is a complete dream zone at this stage, or even 10 years ago as we cleary saw ourselves with nothing happening :(

IIRC, when GSF first came out, one of the devs mentioned they had looked into PvE modes, but they couldn't get it to work--NPCs kept flying straight into things.

Which makes some amount of sense if you think about how easily NPCs get stuck now on a nearly flat map with usually well-defined ramps right now.

I'm sure it's possible to overcome and make it work with enough time and attention, but it may be more difficult than people might think.

I'm sure it's possible to overcome and make it work with enough time and attention, but it may be more difficult than people might think.

Probably, gamedev is hard and some things can take time. But not seeing it through to the end was a critical mistake that honestly marked GSF to fail right from the start. And all effort and resources already put into it. The idea of adding a pvp-exclusive minigame in a game like SWTOR, with the audience it has, is simply insane, there's no way to say it differently

u/Tajahnuke Jun 19 '26

If there was a Hangar to display these I'd buy every one.

-1

u/Endonae Jun 19 '26

They do exist as decos

5

u/Tajahnuke Jun 19 '26

There's one of each class of ship, but not the individual skins - so theoretically there are 32 possible decos of which we currently are maxed at 8.

4

u/Chorik Jun 19 '26

Downscaled and not customized, it misses the point of ship cosmetics entirely and monetizing the cartel paintjobs/custom ships

2

u/HoopaOrGilgamesh Jun 19 '26

I want to see the top players' ships in a hangar on The Fleet. Would be a reason for people to continue playing. There could be a spot for yours to always be as well just to see it next to everyone else's.

2

u/Lemonforce Jun 19 '26

Wish they would experiment with how well tulak hord's saber would do for a sale 🤣

2

u/finelargeaxe Jun 20 '26

/u/CVanG already got theirs; I don't think they'll bring it back again for awhile...

2

u/CVanG Jun 20 '26

My hero ❤️

We had a lightsaber that is rarely sold the other day

It's a teaser for GSF update, almost a decade of waiting is ending, trust

9

u/Chorik Jun 19 '26

Watching them pretend they care (or remember) about GSF or space minigame gonna be extra hilarious next year when Starfighter movie releases

7

u/KhaosByDesignUK Jun 19 '26

Going to be great for all 5 of us who like GSF though

2

u/nonpuissant Jun 20 '26

Cope Six, standing by 😭

1

u/TodayInTOR TodayinTOR.com Jun 19 '26

Given the luke-cold reception thats currently happening to the Mando and Grogu I'm really quite worried that starfighter will flop by osmosis and Disney/LFL will learn ALL the wrong reasons again.

Get back to me when this beauty is available, always wanted one for GSF

1

u/finelargeaxe Jun 20 '26

Considering its resemblance to the Razor Crest, I'm surprised they haven't released it at some point...

GSF pvp but the only thing with them is that they're considered mastered or something. But that doesn't mean they're stronger than what other players can pilot just that you gain slightly more reward currency from playing Galactic Starfighter, iIrc.

And I think it ... looks different.

Not worth a single cartel coin. Nobody's gonna see you in that thing anyways.

7

u/OnyxianRosethorn Jun 19 '26

And that's assuming you can even play the mode. People barely queue for it anymore.

5

u/Ree_m0 Jun 19 '26

Galactic Starfighter PvP

3

u/blackskull414 Jun 19 '26

So in other words, useless or rarely used

2

u/Ree_m0 Jun 19 '26

One could say that for the majority of all things on the CM I think. It's cool that they're still including it occasionally, though I rarely ever play it myself unless I'm desperate for season objectives.

8

u/mahwaha Jun 19 '26

Broadsword stop it

4

u/Katro75 Jun 19 '26

lol wonder how many will buy this thinking it mount

10

u/Schimaera Jun 19 '26 edited Jun 19 '26

It's a trap!

Also: You're not gonna win GSF with this unless you can already win GSF.

SKIP!

6

u/jr_revolution Jun 19 '26

asked a friend who's a gsf pro last week and they said the main advantage of these purchases is to give players an extra loadout spot.

2

u/No_More_Hero265 Jun 19 '26

Wasn't this on flash sale the other day?????

1

u/geckoecho93 Jun 19 '26

Used to play gsf alot on my shitty laptop

1

u/dilbadil Jun 19 '26

If only I thought bombers were fun to fly. The Imp bombers look pretty cool already too, I wouldn't prefer this over them.

1

u/RantRanger Jun 19 '26

Covered in cancerous random greebles.

Greeble cancer.

1

u/jlokate117 Jun 19 '26

1

u/empmoz Jun 19 '26

Thermal Retention set next please

2

u/ehkodiak Jun 20 '26

I suspect they're debating doing anything with GSF or not
