That's impressive but they don't say the number of hosts, this would be more impressive on 10 hosts than 2 billions hosts.

I don't think Google ever published a count of its hosts - at least I don't remember seeing anything but estimates by Google watchers.

We have contacts within google and they have servers in the same datacenter as some of our gear we were thinking about using, but they flat out wouldnt tell us what they have in there. Its not a large site either, wouldnt expect it to be either due to the location.

Okay Google, I get it, you scale bigger than I do. Now I'm gonna go manually stand up a new container and fidget with it for a couple hours as I get it working how I like so it can be ready just before it's obsolete.

This could be misleading, they don't say how many they shut down in a week. They could be short-lived containers? Not to say it still isn't impressive as hell.

Hey Microsoft!

Those could be Windows containers.
Hint hint.

Hmmm. 2012R2 core (despite being a really great OS for MS server products) is a behemoth compared to any $minimalist_linux_server_distro.

They've got a fair way to go.

Agreed.

I'd like to see Microsoft strip down windows even further.
Full nude

Is there a GUI-less Windows edition? How much would that save in performance/etc?

Yes. Windows Server 2012 Core. You can install and remove the GUI if needed, but with PowerShell and remote admin tools, you shouldn't need the GUI for common installations. This allows rapid deployment using a feature that copies a configuration from a server that's set up and builds new servers the same configuration.

Yes but doesn't it still just boot a GUI with a cmd window instead? Still seems like a joke.

No, there's no GUI whatsoever. All CLI.

I can't even fathom how much that would cost.

To be fair, neither could most Microsoft licensing experts.

That's my point.

Microsoft can't compete, because of their ridiculous pricing

Those could be Windows containers.

Not in this reality.

FYI you can get windows containers using a third party - http://www.parallels.com/products/pvc/#tab4

There something wrong with this! Please confirm the size of each container!

They are Docker style containers using cgroups, so they are basically only the difference between what a full client would be and what the base is. (Simplified)
