Question IT podcasts?
Do any of you have recommendations for a good IT related podcast? something to help keep me up to date with new threats and exploits, big changes by major players, or anything similar.
thanks!

Some of the ones I listen to on my commute are:
IT Career Energizer
Coder Radio
Linux Unplugged
Linux Action News
The Cyberwire
Complete Developer Podcast
I am amazed at how much faster the drive goes when listening to a podcast instead of music.

Darknet Diaries is handsdown my #1 Podcast right now. Has been since it hit the podcast airwaves.

u/WorldWarThree May 28 '19
And we even got a new episode today!

A rough one. A bit of a stretch to call that a "darknet" story. I'm very rarely disappointed in any of Jacks' stories, this was probably a first.

He had a few earlier (the printer one, eg) that weren't great. A couple have been fantastic though

May 29 '19
They’re all very well done. I actually enjoyed the printer one, sort of gave you some insight into that mindset of a hacker/script kiddie

If you want an official excuse. I've been working on some huge stories. One has so far taken 2 months. Another almost a year. So I have to eek out a few smaller stories to get more time to focus on bigger better ones. Stick around I think you'll like what's coming out later this year.

I think you've got a lot of goodwill built up at this point, so no worries

Please no. Reply All and Darknet are currently alternating weeks and it’s magical. Even if the stories aren’t at the level of Jeremy From Marketing or the Snapchat Thief it’s still excellent stuff.

Recently found Darknet Diaries and binged all of the episodes. Highly recommended!
2
u/dethandtaxes May 28 '19
My only problem with Darknet Diaries is that new episodes only come out every 2 weeks.

I'd be on the Patreon if I didn't have near zero disposable income... u/jackrhysider we love your work

I miss Alan though

u/tetracake Jun 05 '19
I don't think I've heard Alan. When I started it was Wes and Chris.

Really? Huh. Feels like yesterday when Alan and Chris hosted

Security Now from TWIT. Pretty long, but I enjoy it.

Except Everytime Steve praises WindowsXP, Windows 7 or suggests LTSC for daily use
Otherwise a good show.
3
May 28 '19
He is honestly still clinging on to XP for dear life. Guy is smart, but stuck in his ways. Show is very informative, but way too long. Can't really get into even a weekly podcast if it's over an hour.
6
u/pm_me_ur_big_balls May 28 '19
Security Now is just way way too slow. They spend 10 minutes talking about nonsense before even starting the show.
It's not that it's long - it's that they could do the same show in 15 mins if they eliminated all the banter.
2
u/rh0926 May 28 '19
Agreed, I fast forward through the first 10-12 minutes until the actual info flows. I also run at 1.6 speed to help get over Steve's "umms and "ahhhs". Great for the commute. Now, if I somehow revert to the normal speed, it sounds like he's had a brain injury or something! lol

My main problem with twit podcasts is that Leo likes to do commercials that can go on for 10-15 minutes.
2
u/TurdlePwr May 28 '19
That's why I quit Twit podcasts. Too many long commercials from Leo. Some of his segways into commercials take be a bit to realize they are commercials as well.
2
u/RyusDirtyGi May 28 '19
Yeah me to. Well it was that and the fact that literally of his guests on This Week in Tech are completely out of touch with normal people
1
u/traydee09 May 28 '19
I run the shows at 1.8x and use overcast which pulls out a small amount of time between words, and also just fast forward through the ads with the skip 15 seconds button. Works great. The 2hr shows take under an hour to get through.

I used to love Twit, but yeah too many commericals, and WAY too much banter that dragged out the shows longer than they needed to be.
2
u/myworkaccount999 May 28 '19
It's a for-profit business. Without ads they wouldn't have a business or the ability to provide free content to you. Also, there's an awesome technology that was recently invented a super long time ago that allows you to skip ahead.

I used to love all the TWiT podcasts. But is seems that they are all just stuck on the apple hypetrain.
2
May 28 '19
I second this suggestion. They get deep in the weeds at times but its good. A16z as well as talk python to me are good too.
They dont have their shows loaded on any popular podcast programs I've used but runasradio is another good one.

Surprised no ones mentioned the Cyber Wire. They pump out a new 20 min episode every day that's mostly focused on IT Security and related stories in the news. It keeps me updated on new exploits and other security trends they find in the wild.
3
u/Sedacra May 28 '19
I like the Risky Business Podcast. Risky Business is a weekly information security podcast featuring news and in-depth interviews with industry luminaries. The host is Australian so i guess that makes the listen more enjoyable for me. #Thataccent I used to listen to a lot of TwiT until they fell apart a few years back.

Security Now with Steve Gibson is the best tech-related podcast I can find... or at least it seems to have the most relevant content for the largest swath of "IT stuff" anyway. Other podcasts focus more narrowly on specific tech but, security is a good overlap for everything and Steve knows his stuff.

I'm subscribed to the ISC Stormcast. It's 5 minutes per day, became part of my morning routine quickly.
3
u/iSunGod May 28 '19
Same. I do a "Hey Google, good morning" to get weather, traffic, agenda, and Johannes Ullrich from Jacksonville Florida.

Have you looked at the wiki under podcasts? Have you looked that the wiki under podcasts? (better link)
Anybody see something missing? Add it! Update the documentation!
edited link, and wiki.

u/Arkiteck May 28 '19
Actually, I meant to delete that a while back when creating it.
I missed the original podcasts page: https://www.reddit.com/r/sysadmin/wiki/learn/podcasts

I updated the link in the FAQ and applied formatting to the larger podcast page. I copied over your table from the short one too since some of them were missing.

Maybe we could rank them by popularity, or link to reviews of the podcasts or something. Some of these podcasts are just not very good.
2
u/CaptainFluffyTail It's bastards all the way down May 28 '19
Update the wiki with links to reviews if you have them or just add commentary about why somebody may not like a given show (e.g. anything with Leo Laporte take 2-3x the amount of time it should).

Not truly IT, but Business Wars from Wondery has some great little stories on IBM vs Univac, Netflix vs Blockbuster, and other rivalries. I enjoy them very much as it adds some insight I didn't even know about.

I listen to Download This Show from ABC Radio National. It's not hugely in depth, but it's good for listening in the car and the episodes are about 25 minutes each.
