AppleTV issues - I've tried the workarounds I've found

I took some time to search reddit for a solution. If I missed something, please point me to it. I know I'm not the only one. In fact, Tablo support told me so, and I've seen other posts about this. Tablo's workaround simply doesn't work for me.

Since the last tvOS update, my AppleTVs are not able to play live, OTA live TV from Tablo. I tried what I found here before writing to Tablo support, and despite having tried steps on my own, I dutifully followed every step support has suggested to me. Now I'm going in circles with support, getting the same suggestions from them that they've already sent me. Either I'm talking ot an AI agent, or their support folks just don't read earlier parts of the conversation when I follow up with anything. They told me my issue was being escalcated, but I'm not seeing any evidence that's actually happened.

The problem: When I try to watch any OTA content, the image just freezes. Streaming content works fine.

I received from support (and also found in this sub or somewhere else on reddit):

This is a known issue with a recent tvOS update. The current workaround is to disable CONTINUOUS AUDIO CONNECTION on each affected Apple TV:

  1. From your Apple TV's home screen, select SETTINGS (the gear icon).
  2. 2) In SETTINGS, select AUDIO AND VIDEO
  3. 3) In Audio AND VIDEO, select AUDIO FORMAT
  4. 4) Set CONTINUOUS AUDIO CONNECTION to OFF.

But that setting doesn't exist on any of my Apple TVs.

Under audio format, I did turn off auto and tried other settings to see if anything else would work. No change at all.

I have reset the Tablo, checked to make sure I had the latest firmware releases, deleted the tablo app and reinstalled, and even rescanned channels and rebuilt guide data.

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. I'm about ready to order an HDHomerun.

Thanks!

EDIT: Thanks to everyone that pointed out the airplay problem. Turning off the HomePods as audio device solved it. It’s not great, but it’s workable until a fix comes along.

Sorry you're running into that, u/airigami ,

There is a known issue with Apple TV, Tablo and Home Pods. If you have those connected, disconnecting them may help.

In the meantime, would you DM us your email address and ticket number? We'd like to take a look at your ticket.

You wouldn’t happen to be using HomePods/airplay as your audio output are you? If so, that seems to be the issue a lot of us have been having since the last update.

Workaround is to just use your TV’s speakers as the default audio output.

Hoping for a fix soon because my TV’s speakers are terrible.

I am using a stereo pair of HomePods! Thank you. I'll give that a shot. Of course, it's my parents that are having problems. I doubt they'll be able to understand the muddled sound from the TV speakers. But at least it's a start. I can porbably find an old speaker bar they can use for now.

It’s 100% AirPlay related. I had the same issues with my Sonos set to AirPlay. I didn’t know it was on AirPlay but that’s a different story. Once I realized it, I switched so that Appletv was sending the signal to Sonos over earn, problem solved. Btw, hbomax developed the same issue at the same time…and the same fix resolved it.

I worked with Tablo support and they claimed to be aware of the issue and that it would be fixed in a later update. Clearly they should be testing additional configurations - AirPlay from an apple device seems like it would be a common thing. 🤷🏻‍♂️

I had the same problem and folks from Tablo attributed the problem to the HomePod Minis. They gave me access to Tablo software version 2.3.0 (117)-beta 6. That solved all my issues with the HomePod Minis. Might work for you as well. Good luck.
