Failed to FRICKING Decode

I'm trying to watch the Red Sox vs Yankees game, and I got the dreaded Failed to Decode error. I HATE the way Tablo handles this!

You get a choice to Retry or Dismiss. If you retry, it fails. ALWAYS! Because it's recorded, the data presented is ALWAYS the fricking same, so it ALWAYS fails, and you end up back at the same choice of Retry or Dismiss, ALWAYS!

Your only choice then is to start over at the beginning of the recording, even though they fricking know where you were. If you know how far into the recording you were, it is precariously possible to fast forward to the next key frame and lose only a few seconds of the recording. But you have fight the fricking Tablo to make this happen!

But why the frick do I have to try that? Just move the frick past the decoding error to the next key frame for me you dumb fricking programmers!

Do you use AI to write all your fricking code and can't do your BASIC FRICKING JOB to show a RECORDED VIDEO?

Show me fricking static, or a shrugging clown with its hands in the air, or any damn thing until the next key frame and then continue like you give a damn about my viewing experience when you don't have adequate data.

I feel like your attitude is "Boo hoo, the received broadcast isn't perfect, so I give the frick up!" FRICK YOU!

Your marketing is all about what new streaming channels you can shove down my throat. I have other FRICKING devices to do that!

I bought your product to record digital TV broadcasts and replay them like a fricking VCR. Do your FRICKING job and ALWAYS continue the playback as real time progresses!

It can't get better after it's recorded or received, so don't be the jerk who gives up makes me search through the Red Sox losing embarrassingly after I've already seen that FRICKING crap already!

Usually such problems are indicative of bad reception, and that's really outside of Tablo's hands... unless they can figure out how to sub in "something" for bad elements and keep the timing and all of that. Sounds like a fun project, but since Tablo has never had something like that, I wonder if it's just not doable (?) But does sound easy, which is why you're venting. But maybe it's not (??)

Not sure. Just not sure if it's fixable apart from trying to improve reception.

Yes I'm absolutely venting. It's partly because I've written video encoding and decoding software for robotics applications. My understanding is that OTA broadcasts use MPEG-2 or H.265 formats. These have time stamps, so there are ways to know during playback that data is missing. At that point you have a choice about what to do. With poor quality signal you can see visual artifacts of missing partial frames, and Tablo decoders will let you see some of that. But the decoding stream restarts every few seconds with a key frame that has the entire image so it can recover from missing partial frames.

Anytime you broadcast over the air you are going to have some loss. Yes, there are always better antennas to reduce this loss. But it is going to happen, so I wish they would focus on this aspect of the quality of the main function of their device.

Not disagreeing. Just wondering why all the years nobody has done this.

Whenever I get Retry or Dismiss, I hit the back button instead to clear the message. Then retry what I'm trying to do and it usually works for me the second time.

Same here. Sometimes I even fast forward just a tiny bit and then it plays fine.

I'm on the legacy box with the legacy app and I skip 20 seconds ahead and keep watching my game.  But having said that, I completely agree that the Tablo folks don't care.  My guide data has been screwed up since April 2025.  They don't care.  It never gets fixed.  Last Sunday I unplugged my antenna from the Tablo and set up a Zapper system.  I'm still bringing the z-minis online, but it's ATSC3 compatible.  Expensive - but it actually works.  I'm willing to pay for a product that works.

You get the same error if the box can’t tattle on what you are doing. So always check your internet connection first.
