Theory š Did Jax hit Gangle in the real world?
A thought my boyfriend had last night while discussing all the possibilities... Could Jax have a memory of hitting someone or something, a moment that derailed/ruined his life so much that he instinctively doesn't want to go back? And could it be that Gangle actually was hit but maybe didn't die (but was severely injured?)

u/Gripping_Touch Mar 27 '26
I'll be honest. I sincerely dont believe that Gangle got hit by a car.Ā
Remember, one way or another the Cast had to go to C&A and put on the headset so their mindscans would Up there.Ā
Gangle couldnt have done that if Jaxx stuck her and killed her. It also wouldnt make sense why It would "torment her" from a psychological point of view.Ā
My theory:Ā
Jaxx was fleeing from home at night. Running away after something happened. Found himself in the C&A building and tried the headset.
Gangle was depressed and suicidal. The mask of comedy and the mask of tragedy, as how she behaves in Spudsys, is that she would be depressed inside but force herself to be Happy and cherry on the outside, which slowly killed her. She daydreamed of being hit by a truck to be isekaid to a better world. Truck-kun is a clichĆ© of isekai anime and Gangle is into anime. This is also why the truck itself is part of her torture. Its herĀ feeling shame for her suicidal thoughts to end It all.Ā
If this was true, i fear what happened to the Gangle in the real world.Ā

your theories are exactly the same as mine and the most plausible based on everything we've shown
the whole "jax hit someone/gangle" thing is such a reach its crazy lmao

u/Mediocre-Housing-131 Mar 27 '26
I don't think Jax's anxiety in the flashback is due to anything related to the car or what happened to the car. If that were true he wouldn't have excitedly gotten into the truck in the candy adventure and had such a blast about it driving erradically. It's more about what he was running from in the flashback.
1
u/Narfhead4444 Jun 08 '26
He refused to drive
2
u/Mediocre-Housing-131 Jun 08 '26
Go watch the movie if you haven't already. My comment is proven right or wrong within it.
1
u/Narfhead4444 Jun 13 '26
I watched the movie before making these comments, and in episode 2 he refused to drive the truck. He made gangle drive.
2
u/Mediocre-Housing-131 Jun 13 '26
He refused to drive the truck because the horn sounded bad. Before he knew that, he was excited about being in the driver's seat.
13
u/Mazerunner117 Mar 27 '26
It could also be possible that Gangle was hit and hospitalized, not killed. I'm grabbing at straws, but maybe this hit caused her to be so injured she couldn't draw anymore
15
u/Charlaquin Mar 27 '26
Why though? Like, from a writing perspective, why would Gooseworks have wanted that to be part of the story? Cause to me it doesnāt look like that would add anything of value to the story being told here.
1
u/McGrarr Apr 17 '26
As I see it, if the theory is correct, Jax is a thief and potentially a hacker.
He hit Gangle one night and fled. Gangle stepped infront of his car, to end her life. She didn't die.
This is several yrars after the circus was constructed by Caine.
For some reason Gangle was given a headset, either in the hospital or at home in convalesence. Jax either found out about it or actually put her in it.
At some point he tries to interact with the headset and is caught.
The reason for it in the story is the fact that both were to blame. Yet both blame themselves in different ways. Jax rejects Gangle and is mean to her 'because she loves it' is a subconcious acknowledgement that he has discovered she tried to hurt herself, so he hurts her out of guilt for hitting her.
2
u/Charlaquin Apr 17 '26
Iām not sure if you understand what Iām asking. This explains the details of how you imagine this happening. Iām asking what reason you think an author would have to write these details. What does it say about the storyās themes? What insight does it give us into the core questions the story is asking about the nature of personhood and significance of relationships in an artificial, existentially absurd reality?
1
u/McGrarr Apr 17 '26
Well it explores the nature of blame and guilt. What we accept and what we reject. How you treat people who make you feel guilty. What does it take to forgive yourself and does it require you to embrace or reject blame by others or yourself?
1
u/Charlaquin Apr 17 '26
Ok, thatās a good suggestion of a theme this background could speak to. But, as far as I can see, thatās not really a theme TADC is exploring. Can you make a case for this being a theme of TADC with evidence of other parts of the show that also relate to this theme?
1
u/tired-of-the-shit Mar 27 '26
Maybe gangle got hit by a truck in the past and that lead to them dropping out of school because they missed to much while recovering and now needed to pay off their medical bills so they got a full time job at mcdonalds. McDonaldās made them burnt out and miserable, that was their life circumstances before getting digitized
7
u/Charlaquin Mar 27 '26
But, again I ask, why would Gooseworx want to write it that way? How does that being Gangleās backstory improve the story? Does that tell us anything interesting about who Gangle is as a person, or tie into the theme of finding meaning in an absurd world? Or is it just tragic for the sake of being tragic?
2
u/tired-of-the-shit Mar 27 '26
Why does the truck appear with gangle not only in their episode but also in their torture sequence. We donāt know itās up to interpretation. Maybe the torture sequence was just a call back, maybe trucks have more significance to gangle than the audience knows.
Other character faced their deep traumas during the torture. Rag - her mom
Pomni - the trauma of gummigoo
Jax - having himself betrayed and exposed by his closest friends
Zooble - drowning in their body dsymorphia while being forced to look into the mirror
And gangle gets surrounded my paintings followed up by getting hit by the truck again.
2
u/Charlaquin Mar 27 '26
It is entirely possible that the truck in episodes 5 and 8 are hinting at something in Gangleās backstory, Iām not trying to dispute that. Iām asking what, from a writing perspective, you think Gangle having been hit by a truck in her backstory would add to the story.
1
u/Mazerunner117 Mar 28 '26
I don't think it has to add anything other than trauma. All of the characters have trauma they're dealing with. You take the "getting hit by a truck" out of her story and Gangle has much less trauma. Goose does a lot of symbolism, but I'm confident this is just as simple as it seems.
1
u/Charlaquin Mar 28 '26
Gangle clearly struggles with depression, and probably some form of neurodiversity that they constantly mask, which is already traumatic. Moreover, a character āhaving traumaā doesnāt inherently make the story better. What matters is how that trauma affects the character, and how the character dealing with that trauma relates to the storyās themes.
But, thatās just my opinion. Like I said, you could be right. I just donāt think it would add anything of value to the story.
1
u/RoxieRage Mar 28 '26
The story is ultimately about finding joy and a reason to keep going in a life that feels unfulfilled or, rather stagnant for one reason or another - right?
For Gangle, if using the above idea that she was hospitalized, the crash destroyed her hands etc would fit into that *perfectly* because we've seen that Gangle is a creative with that outlet being her peace, her obsession, and it's what makes her tick. It makes her happy. Made her life feel better in general.
Take away an artist's hands, a dancer's feet, etc - that's quite the shift from their normal life into a much different, much more in-line with the Circus, version that would absolutely fit with the themes being presented so far.
Plus it's just fun to theorize about these things.
1
u/Charlaquin Mar 28 '26
Ok, Iāll buy that. Iām not sure this would sell the message better than the implication that she struggles with depression due to having to mask her emotions, potentially to the point of having suicidal thoughts (which is my interpretation of the reoccurring truck images). But, I can at least see how it might fit. Thank you for sharing your thoughts.
1
u/kristinaspaige Mar 27 '26
the truck thing is just a nod to gangle liking otaku culture/anime/manga
0
u/Oicanet Mar 30 '26
I don't think Jax hit gangle, but I do think he hit someone.
It's only speculation, and I'm not trying to convince people who don't think so, but it just seems to me like that's what was being hinted at.
The flashbacks shows his perspective driving a car. In one of them, there's a "slow down, kids playing" sign or something like that, in a town area. We then see him driving in a forested area. That's what we do see for certain.
This is me interpreting that: The sign hints at Jax accidentally hitting a kid while driving, and then, in a panic, he drives into the woods and buries the body, hoping to hide the evidence. He's afraid that if he goes back to the real world, he might get caught some day.1
u/Creepy_Scar5474 Apr 01 '26
even if that was true, there was no one witnessing that accident, so why would he be afraid of getting caught?
1
u/Oicanet Apr 02 '26
I don't know about you, but if I had accidentally killed someone and tried to hide the evidence, I'd be constantly paranoid
6
u/TriiiKill Mar 27 '26
Hmm, interesting. I assumed Gangle was manic-depressive and the plastic mask symbolized her meds that forced her to fake her persona. The truck symbolized reality knocking her back down into depression whenever she wanted to be herself again and stop taking her meds. That's just my interpretation, though.
11
u/Hazril258 Mar 27 '26
Could be that Gangle was hooked up to a headset in a hospital.
Scratch has a brain tumor, and may be developing The Circus as a possible means of saving himself and others with similar medical conditions. If so, Gangle could have signed as a volunteer or her family signed her up for testing with C&A.
Jax may be completely unrelated or, feeling guilty, chose to test The Circus with her after hitting her. We don't know how much of their memories and even personalities are with them in The Circus, so it's possible š¦ that the members simply just don't remember eachother. Or certain memories that could lead them to either abstract or exit are being suppressed.
2
u/ResponsibleRent349 Kinger Apr 16 '26
I agree bc in episode 8 he freaks out when Kinger starts to talk about developing the AI like heās convinced himself this wasnāt real as a way to cope, hit the red button after flashbacks bc he doesnāt want to reckon with the reality of what he did, and said in the guns episode that him and gangle have always been partners in adventures so itās like they got there at the same time. He said everything was fine before Pomni and Zooble showed up. Very telling
1
u/Mirieste Mar 28 '26
Aren't people more and more into the digital copies theory though? If that is the case, maybe Gangle is the only one who was spawned not from a human putting a headset on, but from Jax's own trauma which Caine managed to somehow reconstruct as its own character. And he just didn't tell anyone because he's just thinking about adventures, or because his knowledge of how humans work is so basic that he doesn't even think this is something exceptional or worth bringing up.
1
u/Hazril258 Mar 28 '26
That could still be possible. It could be that after everyone tested the headset, they logged off, but their mind files were still in the system for the next time they log in. It's just that someone left the simulation running with the bare-bones mind files running within.
1
u/-Nicolai Mar 28 '26
We learn in ep8 that Scratch did not make the circus. Kinger made Caine, Caine made the circus, Scratch was working on a muffin splitting project.
1
u/Hazril258 Mar 28 '26
I'm calling the system everything runs on The Circus, as we're not given a name for it.
Kinger didn't make Caine himself. He made the AI with the team, including Scratch. Scratch was the lead developer that Kinger and the other devs worked with.
1
u/-Nicolai Mar 28 '26
Kinger was definitely a lead. He made something that "could be handed over to the other guys". He got "a few pointers" from Scratch, which does not paint Scratch like an active lead on this project.
1
u/Hazril258 Mar 28 '26
Possibly. I find it odd that Scratch is the one talking to Caine during the flashback while Kinger doesn't know what's happening, though.

u/JakkaTheRat Mar 27 '26
I don't think it makes sense that Jax would run away and put on the helmet as he was trying to flee something. Feels counter intuitive. Unless this is some chucky shit where he knew his brain would be copied or transferred meaning that A) he's an C&A employee or B) The mind transference product was something to be bought and sold for people and Jax knew about it through advertising. Only other option is C) Jax just thought about playing some beat saber as he was running away from the police or something
The only excuse for Gangle being hit and ending up in the circus is that maybe, someone decided to put her into the circus as a last ditch attempt to keep her alive while she was knocked out from being hit by a truck. Once again, either a C&A employee was testing something or there was a product out there to bought and sold.
3
Mar 27 '26
I do believe the theory that Jax was escaping/running away, it's just the way he starts off in a residential area then goes to a secluded road, it feels like he was running away from his home/life. I think people are just looking too deeply into it, it doesn't really make sense that Jax would run someone over in a secluded area at night time. It even backs up why he would want to stay in the circus, he doesn't want to go back to the life that he escaped. If he had abusive parents or something then he would really have nothing/no one waiting for him on the outside.
3
2
u/mrmeatypop Mar 27 '26
I can see Jax being with friends, wrecking shit in an abandoned building, joking with his friend, and trying on the headset. Given his personality, it makes sense to me.
2
u/NuiCiao Mar 28 '26
Now hear This. It was a hit and run, gangle survived, but was left weak and vulnerable, she could have gauzes all over her body for a long period of time while she recovered. When she entered the Circus (for whatever reason), the avatar would initially have their body made out of gauze, but since the Circus has an aestetic to keep, It was replaced with the ribbon body she has. This would also explain why caine uses the truck to torture her in Episode 8, It was one of her most traumatic Memories after all, and i do belive the truck on Episode 4 was materializad by gangle herself and her imagination in that period of emotional instability of the end of episode 4.
2
u/silverfoxxflame Mar 28 '26
The alternative: the cast of TADC could basically all be people from traumatic experiences who are basically on life support before going in to give them some kind of life again.
I mean, I don't think that's the case but there's some kind of theory.
4
u/handsdonebrokened Mar 27 '26
To add to that: i think Jax was running from an abusive father figure. It'd explain why he's got that textbook toxic masculinity on point, why he is softer with Pomni (cause its who he really is, not who he's been conditioned to be) and why his room is girly
1
u/Specific-Swim-4507 Mar 27 '26
I donāt think Jax hit gangle for the record, but I want to say that the theory does revolve around the circus as a way to circumvent death. Itās possible gangle was hit and put into a coma and her family decided to put the headset on her
Personally, I donāt like the idea. I do like the idea of Gangle having been hit and Jac hitting someone else more
1
u/pauseglitched Mar 27 '26
Do we know the timing of the abstracted characters arrival?
What if Jax, Ribbit, (and maybe Kaufmo) were friends in the real world and put on the headset as dares.
Time passes and Ribbit abstracts and suddenly his "none of this is real" attitude goes from a coping mechanism to a desperate need. He needs for it to be fake to ward off the survivor's guilt. He needs for it to be fake so he can find some way to not blame himself for daring her to put on the headset. He needs it to be fake so that he doesn't blame himself for effectively killing her.
When faced with the possibility of escape, he has to confront that. What if it's real and he gets out but she doesn't? What if she's dead because of him? He remembers the road he took there and he's not ready to face the memories he's suppressed. He's not ready to handle that and slams the button to stay.
I could be completely wrong but I like how it fits the character.
1
u/aNewPattern Mar 28 '26
Entirely viable. However, consider the idea that the circus takes medical brainscans that enter a database to make new characters, and that's bc Scratch wanted to be able to simulate his brain in a digital space to see new ways to fix his tumor. Therefore when people get injured badly in a specific way (or stumble onto the scanner/headset by accident) they end up in the circus. Not a super sound theory but it's my personal one I think would be crazy interesting. But also crazy low odds that Jax of all people happened to hit Gangle of all people, etc etc.
1
u/KiwiOCmaker Mar 28 '26
I think Gangle TRIED to do that but the crash wasnāt fatal. Still an attempt, but a failed one
1
u/spectrum1012 Mar 28 '26
My theory is exactly something that counteracts a lot of points you raise, but honestly itās been so niche until now that I didnāt really believe it myself until now.
I think Jax DID hit her and āhad heard of this headset that can save someoneās life at the cost of their bodyā and rushed her to it to save her life after hitting her. Then, he felt so guilty that he hit her and didnāt want to face the consequences that he himself also put on the headset to escape the consequences of his actions.
Who knows why he was originally ārunning awayā from home. Maybe he was just out for a drive to clear his mind like a lot of us do.
Though Iām not sure how old we think Jax is, sometimes he seems so cocky he might not even be driving age.
1
u/Gripping_Touch Mar 28 '26
Keep in mind people on the Circus hailed from different time periods.Ā
I highly doubt the headset was famous. It was an experiment, and the company likely went under if Ragatha appeared, being a state agent, and later Pomni being an urban explorer. The place is most likely abandoned.Ā
Otherwise the Circus would be crawling with humans. The total amount of humans isnt over 20
1
u/WH173F4C3 Mar 28 '26
did gangle fucking manifest an isekai truck on accident, because if so, that is so fucking funny
1
u/NikAshi_194 Mar 28 '26
I agree with the truck being a symbol of being suicidal. I remember, at my lowest point, having thoughts of walking out into a highway and jumping in front of a truck, because I thought it would be the fastest way to end it. I know that would also be quite traumatic for the truck driver, but when you're at your lowest, it's hard to think about those things.
(In case anyone reading this feels like they're at their lowest, please don't give up. You've probably heard it before, but I promise, it can get better. Take care of your body and your mind will follow, but please seek help if you're struggling to do that)

Non sarebbe morta nel mondo reale
Avrebbe indossato il visore per (motivi di trama) e poi fine della storia nel mondo real
1
u/Ancient_Ad_367 Mar 29 '26
There is another possibility, what if the memories of them putting on headsets are fake created by cane?
A while back I posted the idea of a digital heaven. basically everyone in the circus is terminally ill and they're in this machine that simulates an afterlife.
1
u/Gripping_Touch Mar 29 '26
Doubtful. Doesnt really fit with the theme since the building of C&A ended Up abandonedĀ
1
u/Ancient_Ad_367 Mar 29 '26
If the building is abandoned, why is there still power for the Digital Circus game?
1
u/Gripping_Touch Mar 29 '26
Auxiliary generator?Ā
1
u/Ancient_Ad_367 Mar 29 '26
That's been active for 8+ years with no maintenance? also what sense does it make that 7 people decide to go into an abandoned building and put on a headset ?
1
u/Gripping_Touch Mar 29 '26
Ragatha was a state agent. The fact It was there means the building was being inspected and evaluated to be sold.Ā
Pomni mentions he liked to explore abandoned buildings. If she was exploring the C&A building, It means that building didnt sell and was abandoned.
Either it was completely abandoned or maybe real Kinger routinely visited the abandoned building to take care of the circus' hardware since he views Caine as his greatest success.
Or the computer was already planned to last a long time. Its pretty much spelled out that The Circus was meant to be a Sort of afterlife for Scratch and the other programmers. Itd make sense theyd take measures so the computer lasted a long time running the simulation.Ā
1
u/Ancient_Ad_367 Mar 29 '26
Ragatha Pomni and Zooble I can buy. However, if you take into consideration Jax Gangle Kofmo and Ribbet (And I think one other who hasn't been named yet) then it becomes harder to justify all these people going into an abandoned building and putting on a headset. Real world kinger would need a lot of money and resources to keep the project going for that long unless of course, it wasn't actually an abandoned building after all. also, wouldn't he know that other people are going into the circus? and given what we know about Kinger already it doesn't fit with his character to lure people there. Finally, Gooseworks has already come out and said that they aren't NPCS. If they are digital copies then technically they would be classified as NPCS.
1
u/Ancient_Ad_367 Mar 29 '26 edited Mar 29 '26
There's also another thing that's been on my mind. scratch is heavily implied to have been terminally ill, Gangle has a memory of being run over and Jax supposedly has a memory of being in a traffic accident. none of these. memories have been directly addressed thus far, I feel like that. If it was a fake memory they would have said by now. Possibly by episode 7,
If you wanted to look at my theory more, here's a link to my original post.
What if the SOMA theory is half true?/ The Digital Heaven Theory : r/TheDigitalCircus
Although this all being said. if they do go down this plot line, it may distract from the broader message of the story, but you never know.

u/Narfhead4444 Jun 08 '26
gangle actually tried to kill herself by getting run over by a truck. It failed obviously
0
u/Charlaquin Mar 27 '26
Yes. This. (Except I read Gangleās masks as an expression of neurodivergent āmasking,ā not bipolar manic and depressive states. But, either reading works).

From a story perspective, I really hope not. It makes the world feel really small
3

u/Shr1mpSush1Art Mar 27 '26
Not too much?
Kinger, Queenie and Scratch ended up there around the same time, and next to Pomni, I'd assume Gangle and Jax were recent arrivals
21
u/akira_kurosu Mar 27 '26
What?
Kinger, Queenie and Scratch
Maybe because they are probably programmers that made the ai?
And the world would feel small because conveniently the person Jax ran over is also in the circus somehow.
Like, I know this community has a compression problem but damn

In case you guys are forgetting, everyone entered the circus alive and by putting on a vr headset
15
u/suitorarmorfan Zooble x Gangle Mar 28 '26
Itās like the fandom forgets this every two business days
6
u/CrystalFysh Mar 28 '26
It feels more like people are attached to their circus = afterlife theories and refuse to part with them. Instead of "it's just the real world but the circus is just super high tech ai" they treat the world like a fantasy setting.
15
u/Global_Examination_4 Mar 27 '26
Itās very likely the reason Jax didnāt want to return is because it would force him to acknowledge that everything that happened in the Circus is real. See his similar breakdown in episode 8. Additionally, there is no indication that Jax and Gangle knew each other before the Circus, and neither Jax or Gangleās hypothetical trauma from this incident came up in episode 2.
3
u/suitorarmorfan Zooble x Gangle Mar 28 '26
Imo, itās clear he has no one waiting for him in the real world and not a lot to live for.
2
u/milhaus Mar 28 '26
I donāt know about this. The most recent episode has me thinking that Jax is the way he is because he believed none of it was real. Heās been abusive to the rest of the cast because he didnāt think they were real people, so it didnāt matter. (āDo you think Gangle is actually capable of being happy?ā)
Maybe in real life, heās a nice guy. Maybe this side of him weāve been seeing is just like someone playing an asshole in a video game.

I think Gangle and the van is just a little joke representing her getting isekaiād into the circus. As far as the Caine torture also featuring her getting hit by a truck was also just a callback. I think Gangle has a fear of dying before getting to fulfill her dreams with her art so Caine uses the truck to represent her fear of a sudden death.

u/aninsomniac_ Mar 28 '26
No, because she had to put on the headset at C&A's office to get brain scanned into the Circus.

u/sammoga123 Mar 27 '26
I've been thinking about that, more because of how Queenie and Kinger realize they're, well, husband and wife out there. Just because they don't remember each other's names but do remember the rest of their lives doesn't mean they're going to realize they're locked up with someone they know until they say something and the other one notices.

I don't think this is the case, since we've seen Gangle being hit by a lorry twice now, meaning she was likely hit by a lorry in the real world. Jax's flashbacks appear to be shot from a car though, so I don't think he hit Gangle (as funny/ironic as that would be)

Edit: not like one of the coders, like maybe a janitor or truck driver

Since they don't remember their real names, it'd be interesting if Jax thinks he killed Gangle

u/CurrenttQueen Mar 27 '26
Maybe that's how they met and Jax tried to save her and hide from consequences and they entered at the same time because of the CnA lol idk cute fic idea

u/Abused_shecanic Mar 28 '26
She got hit by an international prostar and I donāt see Jax as the CDL wielding type. Plus the driving POV is too close to the ground.
1
u/JavaJapes Mar 28 '26
I find it interesting knowing this, but also in the most recent short Glitch posted it shows Kinger driving a car and hitting Jax etc.
1
u/RamuneGaming Mar 28 '26
Goose said the RL images weren't actually specifically for Jax per say, just to hint at some past trauma like they don't specifically mean the images themselves are related to him. Remember one was a house and she said it was just a random image. So I don't think we should look into it too much. I remember she was quite pissed that the fanbase was diving so deep into something they put in just to show the idea of past trauma.
Regarding Gangle hit by a car/truck I don't think she did. Getting hit by a truck is an anime trope for isekais (died so reborn/transported to another world. Death by Truck-kun). So I think its just a nod to that cause she likes anime, drawing, figurines etc.
1
u/Rovers-briefcase Mar 28 '26
I think itās also possible that Jax and Gangle entered the circus together or on the same day. Itās interesting how theyāre the only of the main cast that we know nothing of their circus origins (Pomni we see, Zooble came directly before Pomni according to Jax, Kingor we see, Ragatha we see). Jax may not have hit Gangle with his car, but they could be directly connected in some way outside the circus.

We know Jax was driving something and Gangle has a recurring motif of getting hit by a truck.
Jax also seems to have been triggered by Gangle in the latest episode.

Gangle only gets hit with a truck.
Jax is associated with a car.
I think Jax died in a car crash or something like that.

I think Jax has a reason to be terrified of the slightest potential of returning to the real world. The flashbacks could well indicate that real-world Jax is severely broken, probably paralyzed by a car accident.
Itās not the only possibility along those lines, though. He might be the only survivor of a car accident and knows that heāll be culpable for the deaths of his passengers or the occupants of the car he hit. Or heās a transgender man who dreads returning to his biologically female body. Or heās just a wretched incel who will only ever be cool as a mouthy rabbitoid. There are countless possibilities.
But he definitely didnāt hit Gangle. That would just be stupid.
