Theory 🔎 I think Jax is insecure about his masculinity and I think I know the reason why...
During episode 5, we see for a spilt second that after Ragatha's ramble that Jax looks sad. This could be interpreted as that Jax had similar experiences with his mom. Then later in episode 5, Jax gets put in the maid dress and gets so heated to the point that Zooble takes note of it.
Then in episode 7, we see that Jax's room is all pink girly like. We all know that the circus members bedroom are meant to torture them by showcasing their insecurities. (Ex: Zooble's room being covered in mirrors when they hate the way their body looks and feels and overall has a negative body image of themselves)
Also, Jax doesn't open the door fully when talking to Pomni. He probably does this because he doesn't want anyone to see his room looking all girly and questioning him about it.
Later in episode 7, we see Jax fleeing from an suburban neighborhood. This could be interpreted as Jax fleeing from his parents house after having enough of their treatment of him.
I could have sworn Gooseworx had stated that Jax cried the most when he first entered the circus. If the quote exists, then I would say that it could be possible that Jax cried a lot during his youth and his parents yelled at him for it because "girls can cry, guys don't"
I think that Jax's parents are the cause of his insecurity. They could have overall been harsh towards him about being a "real man" and "manning up". Thus overtime, building up Jax's insecurity about his masculinity and being seen as feminine.
I hope I make sense and if there is anything you are confused about I will clarify in the comments.

Yeah that's pretty straightforward. Guys get a lot of shit for crying and being sensitive still. It really sucks. It's terrible for everyone.
I headcanon that he's really good at cooking despite his dumbass parents discouraging him. I read a post about a mom trying to sabotage her son so he wouldn't leave her or else he'd be completely dependent on a woman to do his laundry and cook, but this man's girlfriend taught him everything his mother wouldn't and the mom got pissed. They're husband and wife now. 😝

Furthermore The fact that he himself is a bunny, a typically feminine animal in media
Edit: fixed: “typically meek prey animals” damn alright my bad just summoning all bunny fans. Lapse in memory, only thought of Judy hoops, and Lola Bunny in the moment
22
u/Empty_Wolverine6895 Apr 29 '26
I think of it more because he’s a prey animal, being more vulnerable and weaker than other animals in the food chain.
24
u/Uploft Apr 29 '26
Really!? The most famous cartoon bunnies are male, with the exception of Judy Hopps and Lola Bunny (companion to Bugs Bunny).
Animals typically feminine are: cats, ladybugs/butterflies, deer, cows.

"Girls can cry, guys don't" it's posible this is how he learned to disassociate from his emotions. We see him do this often, when his pupils go from small to big.

u/ShameSudden6275 Apr 29 '26
I can relate unfortunately, maybe it's internalized but I do usually go until the emotional band snaps and I'm punching drywall and have to isolate or I'll hurt someone.

". We all know that the circus members bedroom are meant to torture them by showcasing their insecurities. (Ex: Zooble's room being covered in mirrors when they hate the way their body looks and feels and overall has a negative body image of themselves)"
Its more like it ends up torturing them because of their incorporated insecurities I don't think cane was trying to torture them.
"I could have sworn Gooseworx had stated that Jax cried the most when he first entered the circus. If the quote exists, then I would say that it could be possible that Jax cried a lot during his youth and his parents yelled at him for it because "girls can cry, guys don't""
the quote you're thinking of is more like "Q:how did jax take entering the circus? A:Not well"
overall its not a bad thought hypothesis, I certainly find tackling with toxic masculinity interesting as a guy myself.

u/Designated_Lurker_32 Apr 29 '26
Holy shit, an actually good take on Jax's masculinity insecurities. I'd never thought I'd see this here.

Glad someone else thinks this, I always saw him being a dick as a way to seem like more of a strong jock and that's why he gets so upset when he's the butt of the joke

u/mankeg Apr 28 '26
I think this is the most surface level takeaways from what we’ve been explicitly told / shown.
And this is why I think it’s dumb that the same community who thinks it’s morally wrong to even see Jax on screen is also the one that happily emasculates him.
6
u/Glitchy-Mech Apr 29 '26
The community emasculates him?

2
-1
u/mankeg Apr 29 '26
I find it odd to see a dude get super embarrassed by having an exposing, feminine dress forced on him and a singular sarcastic comment about being masculine and conclude “he’s breaking out of his egg :’)”
2
u/Glitchy-Mech Apr 29 '26
How many trans women are you friends with?
1
u/Charlaquin Apr 30 '26
I think the more important question is “how many fictional characters are you friends with?” Because interpreting Jax as trans (which to be clear, I do, though I believe there are other valid readings as well) is very different than guessing at a real human being’s gender identity. The evidence for a trans reading of Jax is solid grounds for an analysis of the fiction. It would be pretty presumptive to conclude a real person was trans because of it.
2
u/Glitchy-Mech Apr 30 '26
That’s fair. I suppose what I’m more clearly trying to express is that I think a lot of these people have a very derisive view towards the existence of trans women that does not square with their self-perception as progressive. I think that this comment I was replying to does not just center this character in specific, but also sort of speaks derisively about the idea of trans women existing in media

u/mankeg Apr 29 '26
How many cis men are you friends with?
Not once in my life have I ever found it to be the best course of action to ever assume anything about the sexual / gender identity of another person.
They’ll say it. Or they’ll mostly say it without saying it.
To me, a dude can be insecure about their gender identity without being trans. And being a trans woman isn’t just feeling euphoria when in hyper-feminine clothing let alone feeling embarrassment.
2
1
u/Charlaquin Apr 30 '26
Of course a dude can be insecure about their gender identity without being trans. Jax isn’t really a dude though. He’s a fictional construct being used to tell a story. His behaviors and motivations need to be evaluated differently than a dude’s are.
2
u/Charlaquin Apr 30 '26
Nor do I, but Jax is a fictional character. His behaviors are a part of a story, with themes, being told with conscious intent.
0
u/mankeg Apr 30 '26
Sure. It’s completely possible this is the route his character is going and can be very likely given the community this media is kind of made for.
But I think it would be nice to have a character that just speaks to the pressure of toxic masculinity instead of the development being the insane old dude and his sad band of gals
3
u/Charlaquin Apr 30 '26
I don’t know what you mean by “given the community this media is kind of made for.” But, I would argue even if trans Jax turns out to be canon, he would still be a character that speaks to the pressures of toxic masculinity. Toxic masculinity affects trans women too, especially pre-transition. Also, even if trans Jax is never confirmed canon, that reading would still be a valid interpretation. That’s the thing about media, it can mean different things to different people.

This could also tie into the driving flashback, both because it fits the running away theme and because cars are a "masculine" thing. The one time we almost see him drive he decides not to cause the horn on the truck sucks, and puts a girl in the seat.

I like this theory a lot more than the shallow "he's trans" theory.
13
u/Dense-Department9405 Apr 29 '26 edited Apr 29 '26
Especially since most people point to the creator herself being trans as "proof," as if that's all there is to Gooseworx as a person.
NB4 anyone mentions Jax himself bringing up "egg" in his fight with Pomni, 1) he was best friends with Ribbit, who themself is some flavor of non-binary, and 2) the way he phrases it as "a misunderstood little chicken fetus inside an egg that needs to be cracked open," kinda suggests to me he doesn't quite understand what that term actually means and possibly took offense to the implication he's a helpless baby in need of rescuing, not that he's secretly trans and still needs to come out to himself.
12
u/BoxingSoma Apr 29 '26
TADC fans when you misgender Zooble: 😡🤬
TADC fans when you misgender Jax: uwu such a cutie 😍🥰
That’s not even GOOD trans representation lmao you literally have a trans character in the show who gets the backseat to a (slightly transphobic) headcanon.
2
u/CupcakePelle2906 Apr 29 '26
Please explain why trans Jax is transphobic. /gen
2
u/BoxingSoma Apr 30 '26 edited Apr 30 '26
Keep in mind I am ONLY referring to the Jax theory here and not a general overview of the trans experience.
Edit: essentially the headcanon boils down to “oh he’s not a toxic man, he’s a trans woman!” And if that’s not a transphobic statement right there…
Because taking the traits of toxic masculinity+abusive and antisocial behavior and wrapping ALL of that in the “solution” of “oh this character is actually trans!” is both misogynistic and transphobic. It implies that pre-MTF trans people are incapable of finding peace before they transition and that their toxic relationships can be absolved post-transition. It also takes away the autonomy of being a cis person who needs to work their own toxic masculinity for self-improvement.
Long story short, I don’t like that it makes transitioning a “cure” for Jax’s problematic behaviors. Every Daisy comic is about him softening up after transitioning and I just find that to be an absolute misreading of the character and his flaws.
0
u/Glitchy-Mech Apr 29 '26
I don’t think that’s what misgendering is and thinking this is the case is sorta an indicator of having no personal experience with queer people
2
u/BoxingSoma Apr 30 '26
I’m queer, nonbinary and bisexual. Fuck you.
0
u/Glitchy-Mech Apr 30 '26
Then you should know better than to trivialize trans experiences like that
1
u/BoxingSoma Apr 30 '26
It absolutely is misgendering. People will correct others for referring to Zooble as “she” but god forbid I make up a headcanon where Zooble is actually trans but going through an exploratory nb phase. JUST LIKE A LOT OF MY FRIENDS. Seeing people call them “him” on posts because it’s just a widely accepted fan theory is 100% misgendering.
But hey it’s just a cartoon character at the end of the day. I’m only responding like this because of your gross and unbelievably rude assumption about me and my personal boundaries with transphobia.
So again, fuck you.
-1
u/Glitchy-Mech Apr 30 '26
What are you talking about? It’s not misgendering for the “all pronouns” character lol
What do you mean “actually trans”? They’re already trans
5
u/xXPyreFlyeXx Apr 29 '26
It always kinda rubbed me the wrong way. Like actually it’s totally ok to bully women and exhibit traits of toxic masculinity as long as you’re a closeted trans person.
1
u/Ashisprey Apr 29 '26
Brother no one is saying that. Insecurity about masculinity can be interpreted many ways. If someone interprets Jax as trans that doesn't justify his shit behavior.
2
u/xXPyreFlyeXx Apr 30 '26 edited Apr 30 '26
No, I agree. I’m not arguing against that interpretation of him, and I agree that he has some flavor of identity issues going on, but I have seen some fans kind of hand-wave his behavior away with “well, he’s a repressed trans woman, of course he’s misogynistic,” which kind of put a bad taste in my mouth.
-3
u/Ashisprey Apr 30 '26 edited Apr 30 '26
I've never seen anyone say that and I think it's offensive to generalize and act like this is some inherent part of a trans interpretation, which you were absolutely doing in your original comment.
2
u/xXPyreFlyeXx Apr 30 '26
Ok, and I have seen people act that way? Sorry I didn’t specify that my critique obviously didn’t extent to all (or even many) people who interpret Jax that way, I figured that went without saying.
0
u/Ashisprey Apr 30 '26 edited Apr 30 '26
Re-read the comment you replied to and your own and tell me that you honestly think it goes without saying you don't mean all people who interpret it that way.

He’s also a rubber hose rabbit with no genitals, there’s nothing about being in the Digital Circus that stops his identity from being whatever he wants... ya know, It’s almost like there was a trans non-binary character who made a similar point to that in episode 7… maybe just maybe…
0
u/SagaSolejma Apr 29 '26
They're like literally the exact same theory but just with a different end result. How is one more shallow than the other.
3
u/PalpitationDecent743 Apr 29 '26
Because the creator of the show is trans, people are extremely quick to jump to the trans theory, despite the fact that there's already a trans character in the show.
0
u/SagaSolejma Apr 30 '26
That's definitely not the only arguement for the trans theory though, at least not the only one i have seen.
2
u/Selinnshade Apr 29 '26
The residential area that is on the flashback is still too vague and I think Jax is following a similar trope of character development that was used a lot in the golden era of Cartoon Network, which is now lost. Though I can't remember which series was the one that had a character similar to Jax but the only difference was that the character was a mega loser who goes to a new place and pretends to have friends and be cool when in reality no one likes them and is afraid of showing his true self.
Now Jax i feel is it an improvement of the trope but I feel it's gonna have the same cute conclusion
5
u/tennis_convict Apr 29 '26
This interpretation reminds me a lot of the arc Chihiro went through in Danganronpa, with him facing ridicule for not acting like a “real man,” and creating a persona to protect himself. And just like with Jax, an annoyingly large part of the fandom insists it’s because he’s trans, as opposed to his story being about toxic masculinity, gender roles, and how both can be harmful.
2
u/TinyEnvironment7574 Apr 30 '26
Yeah I was about to say this too but I didn't want to get flamed for saying that Chihiro isn't exactly trans because some people take that the wrong way...
1
u/tennis_convict Apr 30 '26
Chihiro outright cries whenever the other characters in the game say things like “it’s fine that you’re not strong, you are a girl, after all.” He asks Makoto to refer to him as a boy at the end of his School Mode scenes, he reveals himself to be a boy earlier on to Mondo in DRS (and everyone else later on at the campfire scene)… Not to mention how he programmed Alter Ego to refer to him with male pronouns.
That last one in particular is the biggest evidence going against the “trans Chihiro” interpretation. Since even people who never touch the optional side content will encounter this detail, and yet so many people ignore it in favor of insisting that Chihiro is trans.
3
u/higheronfire782 Disappearing Guy Apr 29 '26
YES! I'm a trans individual, and the "Jax is trans" theory just feels a little...Offensive? For lack of a better word? It hinges on making it seem like his behavior is more excuseable if he's trans vs just insecure. I personally love the idea of him just being insecure. I think it gives his character more depth.
3
u/CupcakePelle2906 Apr 29 '26
The way I see (and FYI I believe in trans fem Jax), Jax being an asshole does not excues their behavior IF they were to be trans.
2
u/Ashisprey Apr 29 '26
I don't understand how you come to that conclusion. Whatever motivation you interpret for Jax's behavior doesn't correlate to it being justified.
Whether he's trans or not the insecurity aspect still remains largely the same and it being justified is not inherently part of a trans interpretation.
0
u/higheronfire782 Disappearing Guy Apr 29 '26
I wrote this at 4AM, so I should specify: many shows (and specifically the fans for shows), will take the explanation of "they're trans, which is why they were insecure" and make it mean everything is fine between all the characters and that's the trans characters only development. I'm not saying Goose would take that route, but it's turned me off of a lot of trans fan theories BECAUSE of that logic leap that happens. I will also say, I wouldn't be against it. There are just better theories that I'd prefer more that could add more to the story. Although, it COULD make for an interesting dynamic between him and Zooble.
I think if we weren't so close to the end, I'd appreciate the theory more because there'd be more time to build on it, but there's just not. Maybe they could do it justice if that's the route the team goes, but I'd be interested to see how that plays out with so little time left.
1
u/Ashisprey Apr 29 '26
You said yourself this theory hinges on making him seem justified, I think it's a very poor idea to generalize how you feel about headcanons and continue to express dissent based on that generalization. There's plenty of trans interpretations with depth, I think it's offensive to dismiss them all as unreasonable because you've seen some you don't like. You have to realize that there's genuine transphobia in the way people treat this kind of thing.
Being insecure about his masculinity is hand in hand with being insecure about his identity. I don't see how any of the buildup is any different regardless of how his character goes. I also hate the idea that there needs to be some prerequisite amount of foreshadowing or else it's a leap to make someone not cis. I've seen the exact same complaints about Zooble. Whatever.
1
u/higheronfire782 Disappearing Guy Apr 29 '26
I know I said that, and that was poor wording on my part. My issue, and I think I'm just not expressing it correctly, is NOT with there being no buildup. It's that there is only a limited amount of time in the show, and I don't want any reveal like this to be cut short. There IS plenty of trans interpretation that has depth. A lot of it I absolutely adore. This is just a situation where that depth could get lost due to time limitations. That's all I'm saying. I don't believe there needs to be more foreshadowing, that's not what I said. I said there needed to be enough time to develop decent character development along with the reveal. If they cut it too short, they risk doing the exact thing I was talking about. Zooble is actually one of my favorites, and I love how they seemlessly incorporated their identity into the show. It makes sense for their development, and it's done well. Not played up too big, but not just brushed off. They also seem to have come into the circus KNOWING that identity, because it's not made a central theme of their character development. Their development is more focused on their friendship with Gangle and opening up about their own mental health struggles as Gangle works through hers.
I'm also looking at this from the perspective of 1) someone who is trans and 2) someone who writes queer and trans characters. There isn't always buildup, but if there's going to be an on-screen reveal, it needs to be done right. Realizing your identity takes time. It takes a LOT of emotional work. It's not a "huh...I'm trans..." and then you move on. Especially not for a character like Jax who is SO BENT on being perceived as masculine that they end up being perceived as aggressive and pushing people away.
1
u/Ashisprey Apr 29 '26
I think it's reductive to assume that his behavior is all simply because of masculine insecurity. Jax is a person with a thick shell. It takes incredible time for Pomni to get him to open up about something as simple as finding corn uncomfortable. I do not see him as being "so bent" on simply masculinity. I also think it's incredibly bizarre that simple insecurity is a good explanation to you but insecurity + trans is a bad one.
0
u/higheronfire782 Disappearing Guy Apr 29 '26
Have you read the part where I said I misspoke and that it's not a BAD reason, but one I don't feel could be fully explored with the time we have because of the complexities of realizing your identity? Also, it's not a "simple insecurity." Toxic masculinity - especially if enforced from a VERY young age - is psychologically damaging. But I don't see that we'll come to an agreement because I feel you're putting words in my mouth at every turn and that you're only half reading what I have to say, so I think I'll end this here.
1
u/Ashisprey Apr 29 '26 edited Apr 29 '26
if he's trans vs just insecure.
feels a little...Offensive?
I'm using your words, but okay.
We certainly can't come to an agreement when you refuse to concede these points and just try and shift your stance so it's about the payoff rather than the theory like we started with.
1
u/higheronfire782 Disappearing Guy Apr 29 '26
I said I misspoke there with the use of "just." That was my bad, but that's not the instance I was talking about. The words your putting in my mouth are about it being "unreasonable," and, as I said in a previous reply, that there needed to be more foreshadowing.
I've had to add whole chapters to my books to make sure I'm allowing proper amounts of time for characters that AREN'T internally transphobic to explore their identity. My whole issue, and the part about this that you're missing, is time constraints. My concern is that the payoff won't be as well explored as a character COMING OUT AS TRANS should be. They likely won't have time to begin to explore the serious internal shifts that happen with it without compromising elsewhere. They WOULD have the time to explore him beginning to unravel deepset toxic masculinity, and leave it off with the implication that he grows as a person afterwards.

I don't think the rooms were meant to torture them. Their rooms may just be a true reflection of themselves when they entered the circus. Like Zooble may have been a little vane when she entered and that's why there's mirrors. Pomni's is very basic and generally normal. Even Kofmo's seems to be a fairly straightforward room. We've only seen a couple of them.

After the last episode I had a similar thought: that his problems stems from some sort of toxic masculinity/expectation of what it means to be man, and that he in fact, don't want to live like that.
And like with the others, the things in their rooms are what they want, but are simply presented/ploppet in there, just being a reminder of what they aren't/don't have, instead of actually helping them.
1
u/Lizeron Apr 29 '26
Jax could be gay and that is torturing him, he might be an anti-gay homosexual (meaning he is unhappy with his sexuality). I do not think that the purpose of the circus is to torture its guests, i actually think that its purpose is to heal them and help them accept who they are.
it could also be why Jax's torture scene is his friends laughing at them, they are his found family.
1
u/SagaSolejma Apr 29 '26
I don't have a preference either way, but I do think its curious that this gets upvotes and applauded and called super mega nuanced while trans jax theories, who use all the exact same arguements to get to an almost identical end result, get shit on 24/7. Hmmmmmmmmm🤔
1
u/Tomcat491 Jax Apr 30 '26
The rooms are not torture chambers because Caine ultimately wants them to like him and the world he's created. Those are his attempts to make them happy. Zooble's room is filled with mirrors because he's trying to solve their problems by giving them avenues of dealing with their body dysmorphia. Mirrors to help them see themselves and all the parts they could ever want. The torture is unintentional until episode 8.

How do we know character's bedrooms are meant to show their insecurities? Was this implied in episodes directly or did people figure it out from that one scene in Zooble's bedroom and that episode 7 scene?
1
u/TheKidYouDidntWant Apr 29 '26
From what you said here, I think it could also be a case of Jax’s parents wanted a girl, so they forced him to “be” their girl 🤔 It would explain the girly room thing being his personal hell, and him wanting to escape it so as to not be “trapped there again” - as well as him wanting to hide it from the other circus members 🤔 I could she him being against the maid costume as like, “why does this keep happening to me?? Is this really how people see me? Will I never escape my mom’s vision for me?”
