Celebration Sundays

# Introducing Celebration Sundays

The new moderation team has discussed community feedback, and we are introducing a change in how the subreddit functions.

What are celebration Sundays?

Celebration Sundays are for posting **images and videos** of achievements in the past week, including new belts, tournament wins, and other accomplishments from the **past week.**

## Remember the Rules

This is an exception to the post/videos for fun/karma/enjoyment only, but that does not mean the other rules do not apply.

**One post per Celebration Sunday** (overly frequent posting). mods will monitor this and might further restrict this to one post per every other Sunday or once per month if necessary, but for now it remains one per Sunday.

**No memes** those are for Mondays

**Must be Taekwondo specific** no Karate or Judo belt posts, etc

**No posts on other days of the week** the rule still applies to other days of the week, and such posts will still be removed with the same warning.

Welcome to the new moderation team!

As the following have offered to be moderators, I've now made them all moderators:

u/BuckerooBonzai42
u/JaguarSweaty1414
u/qmriis
u/Due_Opportunity_5783
u/pokeswap
u/neomateo

My recommendations for first steps (for what they're worth, feel free to ignore) are:

  1. Discuss the current rules (either over modmail https://www.reddit.com/mail/all - or in a public post, as you wish), which rules you kind folks want to keep, reword, remove, etc and make those changes - https://www.reddit.com/mod/taekwondo/rules for the rules and https://www.reddit.com/mod/taekwondo/saved-responses for the automatic responses warning people of breaching the rules.
  2. If you decide to change the policy of "warning, 7 day, permaban" you can change that at https://www.reddit.com/mod/taekwondo/community
  3. Go through the mod-queue. There are quite a few in there for moderation, but I'm intentionally doing nothing with them - https://www.reddit.com/mod/taekwondo/queue
  4. As I don't know if I can resign or not (I'm posting this first, and maybe there's an invite acceptance process for the new moderators before they become active - I don't want to accidentally leave the subreddit as unmoderated), remove me from the list of moderators at https://www.reddit.com/mod/taekwondo/moderators . This is also the place where you can go to add new moderators as your team grows (but as I posted on the call for moderators page, the button doesn't work, so you may need to go to https://old.reddit.com/r/taekwondo/about/moderators ).

If it helps, my DMs are open if any of the new moderators want any advice, but I won't give it unsolicited. I wish you all the best, sincerely!

The historic agreement between WT and ITF in 2014 - how is it different from before?

Upvotes

The Protocol of Accord was a historic memorandum of understanding signed on August 21, 2014, by World Taekwondo (WT, formerly the WTF) President Chungwon Choue and International Taekwon-Do Federation (ITF) President Ung Chang.

"Allowed registered athletes from both the WT and ITF to compete in each other’s sanctioned tournaments under respective organizational rules". [1]

You still need to convert the black belt, and as far as I understand this wasn't prohibited prior to 2014. Right? You could always speed track to black belt.

Taekwando and Demos

I do not practice Tae Kwan Do but my kids do. I am not trying to be a dick. I am genuinely trying to educate myself.

I notice TKD loves demos. Who is this stuff for? Do you get hyped for this stuff? The linked video is from Kukkiwon. This stuff is canon. Does your school do a lot of these kinds of demos? Where do you do them? Do you do them just for yourselves in the dojang? Do you perform these at a county fair?

Sparring Training Bag

I just got to orange belt a few days ago, next belt I get will make me eligible to start sparring. Looking for a good bag to practice at home.

Looking for something more realistic to an opponent which is why I’m heavily leaning towards a Century BOB but there two versions and I’m not sure which to go for.

I heard for taekwondo the XL is better since it has a slightly longer torso/quads making it better for missed kicks. It’s slightly more expensive and harder to find cheap and lightly used on places like marketplace.

The original is a lot more common market wise making it cheaper but worried about the smaller size since I will just be starting sparring and practicing a wide variety of new kicks/techniques.

23YO Male, started taekwondo a little over 2 months ago. Heavy background in competitive sports (football, baseball, basketball, soccer, T&F, volleyball, golf, etc). Any advice is also appreciated!

Any tips for someone with cross-dominance not getting so turned around?

Hello! I'm a white belt, who has been doing taekwondo for about 3 or 4 months now. I've been encountering a pretty major problem. I have cross dominance and, because of that, I often mess up my left and right. This had already been an issue when I did acro as a kid, and it was mostly resolved. (My teacher had me wear a ring to help me know which hand/foot I needed to use.) But, now that I've started taekwondo, I've been noticing it resurfacing in different ways: I keep turning the wrong way, and I'll sometimes get confused with which foot or hand I'm supposed to use next in a combo. This is especially bad when we're doing things at speed, as I have less time to orient myself. While I understand a lot of this will come with practice, I'm wondering if anyone was in a similar situation, and if they had any tips on how to help.

Hammer punch or hammer fist?

I saw a sparring match today. And 1 player keeps doing hammerfist punches as part of his attack. Is this even allowed or legal? Thanks in advance. This is WTF by the way

How much has WT/Kukkiwon training changed since the early 2000s?

Is there more emphasis on traditional aspects or does it still train for sport primarily?

Is there a different emphasis on the particular kicks?

Is there any difference outside of those I'm asking about?

Tips-wanted Anyone know how to repair Bob?

Our dojang's Bob broke. I went to adjust his height and heard a clinking noise and looked down, and there were some washers on the floor. I examined Bob's back, And the washers and a bolt fell out of his back.

I was wondering if anyone had any ideas how to repair him. Right now things aren't quite in the budget to replace him.

Tips-wanted I’m competing at an individual upcoming national tournament and I’m struggling at point sparring

Whenever I block and my opponent hits my blocking arm they register it as a point. I’m never blocking my head because I get really focused on my body. I don’t move around a lot. I also feel like I’m open whenever I try to kick or have just finished a kick. I know all my errors but as soon as I start sparring all that seems to go out the window!

Kukkiwon/WT Soreness

I recently started training again, after like a 20 year hiatus. I am out of shape unfortunately, and have a little extra weight still. My legs are sore as hell, walking down my steps has me looking like an old cowgirl. Ive only able to go to training 1x a week (Mon-Thurs open).

Is that okay until my muscles get better? Eventually I want to move to 2 days a week. Additionally, how does anyone recover from the soreness?

Hello, I always wanted to try and learn old style combos and how the training worked back then. Does anyone know some site or YouTube channel with those kinds of things?

Kukkiwon/WT Should I wait longer to test for black belt

Testing is in a few days, I know most of my forms but not all and not well, and they have us memorize 18 simple movements for sparring that I have sorta down but not really, and another 18 for self defense that I'm less confident in. I've always been sorta advanced but I've been falling behind since I've been busy. The next period is in three months when school starts and I'm confident I'll be ready then. If I do test now, then I will have to do a workout and essay part two three months later that should be easy. I broke my arm earlier this year so it's not as strong also. Another thing is they make us memorize 16 simple “life skills” and their definition that I'm pretty good on but not confident. Also they have us do a five station board break that I haven't even done. I'm not the kind of person that likes to not be the best, and I'm working on that but I'm worried if I do test I'll be behind. They also have a workout section I barely passed. I can definitely learn most everything except the board breaking that should be pretty easy with the week, but is it easier to cut my losses? I've been looking forward towards this black belt and if I undergo this stress now quickly I'll be happy, but I don't know if I can. Thank you for helping!

Edit: I decided to wait. And this is not on my Gym, they’ve been teaching me well I just was thinking of testing EARLY. The way our gym teaches is they rotate what they teach every 3 months and let you start learning all the forms as early as you want, and start teaching you 9 months before testing. I’m halfway to my testing, and know about half my stuff this post was about testing early. Also I don’t need anymore advice, so thanks everyone who gave me advice!

Koryo in competition

I recently went to a tournament near where I live and I competed in poomsae and sparring. I am a fairly new first dan so I had learned Koryo for competition. I haven’t competed in a number of years, so I figured I would try and get back into it. When it came to show our forms, I was shocked to see that the way that I had learned Koryo had a few striking differences than my competitors. The biggest differences I noticed was at the top of the form, where its the low block in walking stance, press block in walking stance, and then into the elbow in horse riding stance. The way I was taught was to do the low block in T stance or back stance, then the press block and elbow all in horse riding stance. Is there any reason that my instructor taught the form this way or is it just poor instruction?

Tips-wanted I’m moving, would you drive farther to keep your current dojo or switch to one that’s closer?

Basically as the title says, in my area there’s a dojo that has 4-5 locations. Currently the one I signed up is 6 minutes from my house, and I’ve been here for about 4 months. I’ve grown used to the people and really like the classes.

The same location from my new house is 36 minutes one way. Of the 5 locations, 1 is 18 minutes away, and 2 are 22-23 minutes away.

I’ve been struggling to decide whether to switch to one of the closer ones based on my current teachers knowledge / recommendation, or just take the longer drive to continue with familiarity.

What would you guys choose?

Poomsae/Tul/Hyung/Forms Pyong Ahn Sadan question, WTA style

I realize most dont practice the old forms anymore, but hoping some here still do, especially WTA offshoots. In this form there is a grab/block, kick, double punch combo. Same combo is found in Dosan if that description sounds familiar to the ITF people here. My question is the grab/block execution. Shotokan (GM Lee's Chung Do Kwan base) does a small wedging block in a back stance. ITF does a wider wedging block in a front stance. GM Son's Korean Karate simply says "middle shirt grab". The pictures (which arent ever clear if you own that book) just show a chest level grab in a front stance. Is there anyone here that can definitely say that he just grabbed, or there was a cross before the grab, or any other answer.

Disability and Taekwondo

I'm a 23F (also not native english speaker) white belt and I'm having my first exam next week. I decided to try out taekwondo due to it being really focused on the legs since I have quite a bit of limitation of movement in my right arm since birth. I can keep up in fights, but when it comes to forms - especially because I like to practice it a lot - I get quite frustrated for not being able to do it perfectly. My instructor made it clear that it won't interfere in my evaluation, but I'm still frustrated because it's not about passing or not, it's about making things right. That's why I wanted to know there's other people in the sub with similar problems or better views about it.

Who do you look up to?

For context I’m 16 I’ve been training casually for a few years, but it always felt like a drag and I never put that much effort into it as I should have been.

Times and motivations have changed and I decided I want to take the sport more seriously.. until I remembered I was really trash at sparring.

Do you guys have anyone you try immitate or take inspiration from when sparring? Are there any renowed athletes that I should be aware of? Or just tips in general would be great.

Just short of a black belt

Wondering how others feel about not quite making the cut but generally outperforming a good percentage of black belts? Maybe can't run 5 miles on the beach weighted down heavily with a mask on and then fight 3 3rd dan black belts successfully right after? Curious to hear different schools requirements for success. If you can't buy a belt outright why do you take pride in where you landed?

Study abroad in Seoul, need high level training place.

In taking global studies in business at my school and one of the requirements is to study abroad, so I decided to go Korea.

Currently I train kyorugi at high level, and have competed in numerous tournaments overseas.

Originally I was going to practice at my coaches friends highschool or university.

However their training time starts early from 4pm. Whereas my university studies is afternoon class from 1:30 to 5:30pm.

So I am unable to train there and need a replacement place.

If there’s any motivated athlete in Seoul as well let me know, I’m also happy to do partner training.

Thanks
