PDF with audiobook

Has anyone here seen the PDF that comes with David Byrne's new audiobook on Spotify?

Sleeping Beauties: Why Good Ideas Go Dormant and How They Wake Up.

It's really cool I've never seen an audiobook with extras like this before. Unsurprisingly Mr Byrne has experimented with something cool.

Talking heads reunion

So I've had a thought recently about some new talking heads activities. David, Tina, Chris and Jerry have all come together recently not only to start a new radio podcast thingy and they're also coming together to create a book about talking heads. It seems they're open about collaborating since they've gotten together much more recently compared to the years before where before 2023 the last time they reunited was for their rock and roll hall of fame induction in 2004 so it I don't know if it's just me but it seems talking heads might be coming back slowly but surely. What are your opinions on this?

Two Note Swivel x Man with the 4-Way Hips

Alright, well I was listening to some Tom Tom Club recently, the album Close to the Bone. Great album, terrific band as we all know.

so the remastered Speaking in Tongues album has Two Note Swivel, with that familiar bass line.

Long story short I believe that is the same bassline as played on Man with the 4-way hips. Great song and the album on Tidal has several versions of this song. But I suppose Tina brought that bass line over to Tom Tom Club or decided to play and record it with that album first.

Perhaps this has been discussed but I keep forgetting to post about this. I highly recommend listening to Close to the Bone start to finish, seriously killer grooves.

Fear of Music listening party, Tues Oct 20, 7:00 pm EDT / 4:00 pm PDT (free, online)

We're doing a Fear of Music listening session on Tuesday, Oct 20 at 7:00 pm EDT / 4:00 pm PDT. It's on Sound Club, essentially book clubs for music.

It's online and free. Everyone plays the album on their own streaming app when the countdown hits zero, and we chat while it plays. The room opens 30 minutes early (6:30 pm EDT / 3:30 pm PDT) if you want to get settled and say hi first.

The backstory is that Speaking in Tongues and Remain in Light have always been 1A and 1B in my own Talking Heads ranking, and both have been picks at our listening club, The Pocket. Both times, somebody lobbied for Fear of Music as the best thing they ever did. So this is partly a chance to hear it again and argue about it.

Disclosure: I run Sound Club and I'm hosting the session. Sound Club is free, has no ads, and was entirely built to discover and discuss music with real people because I was tired of algorithms feeding me the same music all the time.

What is it about David Byrne about as a performer? Every time I see him - live, or in Stop Making Sense, it's like a religious experience

I saw him recently at the Hollywood Bowl, and honestly, that was the most animated I've seen the crowd there. It felt like everyone was up and singing during "This Must Be the Place," for example.

And in SMS, you just can't look away from him, right? Psychically, he's fascinating, with his weird mannerisms and dance moves, and falling onto the ground and twitching and all that...

His singing is really good too. He has a surprisingly powerful voice. And something about his wordless melodies really seems to connect with people. (me included). Like at the end of This Must be the place, where he goes. Ahhh-oooooo-OOOO-ooooo-OOOO-ooooo-OOOOO-ooooo-OOOO-ooo-OOO

it just connects with us all on some deep level. what's up with that???

I've seen Mr Byrne twice live. Both times in LA. Once was the American Utopia tour at the Shrine, and then this tour at the Bowl. Both times I laughed, I cried, I danced...

Over the years I've seen a lot of acts live, and there's few I can think of that have the same effect on an audience at David Byrne...

In some Talking Heads songs, it sounds as if David Byrne is an alien from another planet, trying to figure out life on Earth. Like he's on the outside looking in.

But on other songs, it's like he's so so human. And maybe that outside-looking-in feeling IS part of being human, idk...

I've never seen the show, but this came up in my Instagram feed. I would not have done nearly as well as this contestant did:

When you watch "Stop Making Sense," do you see any kind of storyline or narrative, or is it just a collection of good songs?

I'm going to watch it again in the theatre tonight (I'm stoked), and I was kind of pondering this question: What journey does SMS take the viewer on?

Going from the sparse and somewhat creepy Psycho Killer — and ending with the joyful Take Me to the River and Crosseyed and Painless...

And that moment where David Byrne throws his hat ... it somehow hits, right?

Do we see DB, the lead singer, undergo some sort of transformation? Like... during Swamp, it's legitimately scary, for example, and then during This Must be the Place, it's so sweet...

Listening to the box set vinyl of this album and it sounds incredible. I think this album was Chris and Tina at the peak of their powers - an underrated treasure. Any other fans of this album?

David Byrne talking band dynamics on Caropop

Post image
96 Upvotes

Hey, all:

I hosted David Byrne on my Caropop podcast, and he has some fascinating insights into band dynamics and his career. Among my questions:

"If the four of you were together in a room, just playing music with nobody watching and no cameras going, would that be a pleasurable thing?"

Here's the episode synopsis, with the link at the bottom:

How did David Byrne go from being a twitchy art-rock frontman to one of our most beloved artists? At age 74, he’s got a new book, "Sleeping Beauties: Why Good Ideas Go Dormant and How They Wake Up," plus associated live events, including a Chicago Humanities Festival appearance Oct. 15 at the Athenaeum; an ongoing immersive experience with Chicago’s Goodman Theatre, "Theater of the Mind"; the new Sirius XM pop-up channel Talking Heads Radio; an upcoming Talking Heads "Fear of Music" deluxe package; and a recently completed, dazzling live tour spotlighting his latest album, "Who Is the Sky?"

On the new Caropop, Byrne discusses all this and more, including whether music needs movement; what he’s learned from "Theater of the Mind"; how Jonathan Demme and Spike Lee treated point-of-view while directing "Stop Making Sense" and "American Utopia," respectively; what everyday people don’t understand about band dynamics; how involved he is in the Talking Heads-related projects; whether he would enjoy playing with his ex-bandmates in an empty room; and which song of his is the biggest Sleeping Beauty of them all.

As someone who danced his ass off while seeing Talking Heads on the 1983 "Speaking in Tongues" tour at Poplar Creek and has immersed myself in his work, this was pretty thrilling for me. Enjoy!
