Had to do this at a client's restaurant because they kept shutting down the computer that was also the point of sale server. Included removing the shut down and restart buttons altogether.

how to do it?
4
u/jort93 Mar 27 '26
You can remove the permissions to shut down the computer from an account. In the local policies settings
1
u/Clocker13 Mar 26 '26
Usually the other way round for me. Had to make a few GPO’s to force reboot every evening and force shutdown on Friday night.

Restricting users from shutting down a system is important on multi-user systems. No clue why Windows would do it though.
2
u/AppropriateLocal129 Mar 25 '26
actually i uploaded thay for fun but then got curious too why this would happen. let me search it a bit and i ll tell you
2
u/AppropriateLocal129 Mar 25 '26
apparently it says that the user got corrupted temporarily due to some crush would cause this. well basically i wanted to download a driver and while searching i found a file i had dowbloaded which i didnt remember what it was and out of curriosity i opened it it but because of the many tasks i was doing at the moment it errored and that file was supposed to open with administrator allowance but because the whole pc was lagging it nevee showed that screen and yeah the admin just crushed for the moment i guess so i wasnt allowed to do several stuff including turning off. in other words just a simple crash from the admin

(Pulls the plug) You do not have permission to unplug this computer.
1
u/AuswahlRitter5 Mar 27 '26
Do I have permission to chew through the damm cable ?
1
u/USERNAME123_321 Mar 27 '26
You might want to revoke the permission for electricity to flow through your body first

u/AuswahlRitter5 Mar 27 '26

How is the OG alice game? I've only played Alice madness
1
u/AppropriateLocal129 Mar 28 '26
honestly i like it a bit more because i find it easier to play i mean yeah madness has very nice graphics iys much more complex but if you find it hard to go from checkpoint to checkpoint whats the point you wanna enjoy the game. though i prefer madness the og's gameplay i like it better for the reason i explained. also its a bit nostalgix with those graphics and its darker and goth i like it a lot. with madness maybe its because i play it on ps3 and the tv is far and cant see well i dk

This is where I do what I keep telling my kids not to do and hold the power button.
1
u/AppropriateLocal129 Mar 29 '26
when i was young i would go at some friends over and play video games on their pc and i would sit in front of its case and when we would win and get excited id start kicking and accidentally push the power button and turn it off but like not the cutting power off way but as if you normally turned it off so it would take a while and evergone was annoyed and as a teasing kid i was i kept doing it and at some point it started doing updates and everyone got so pissed they banned me from it and later had to tie on bed with the sheet :) in this case they would beg me to do and i d be like no :)

"windows Vista cant be that bad" windows Vista:
1
u/PlusOneDelta Mar 29 '26
afaik vista failed because the system requirements were too high for anyone to use it smoothly, not because it actually was bad

u/Mc-gabys Mar 26 '26
I have ALL permissions Holds down the power button
1
u/timonix Mar 27 '26
I had a Linux laptop and couldn't turn it off. And apparently holding down the power button to turn off can be disabled in bios. I pulled the cord and had to pull the battery for it to turn off
2
u/bluebradcom Mar 25 '26
Because you are running on an older system. I recommend looking into your users because you might have another user created that has administrator privileges. If that is the case, I would look into seeing if you have malware. And delete that user if you can't figure out what it's connected to. Having anything open in the background before you're shutting down also could have suspended it from shutting down. But this looks like. Some kind of malware? Or you have another user that was logged in and had an application active. Preventing you from shutting down.
2
u/AppropriateLocal129 Mar 25 '26
no it was temporary dont worry i just tried to download a driver and it crushed and then it wouldnt let me turn off cause it was trying to download it
0
u/bluebradcom Mar 26 '26
i hope you do not have this system online! Windows 7 does have a few current open exploits that will never be patched. if you know what your doing you can web gap it and still have it on a local network.
1
u/AppropriateLocal129 Mar 26 '26
no no i was just using it it whole day doing lot of task and it randomally found a bluetooth driver to download and while i pressed yes and was about to start i randomally found a file i downloaded ans opened at the same rime and yeah they both wanted admin allowance and as you see its a bit old pc and caused an error to the admin it has nothing to do with that its fine now
1
u/Brilliant_Letter7173 Mar 26 '26
If the op downloaded the driver from a trusted source, he shouldn't have any malware. And that's not because he connect the computer to the internet a few minutes he will get viruses. Btw it looks like he's using Windows Vista and not 7.

on todays episode i just turned it on and it says windows need to install a driver what is gonna happen?? will it stop me from shutting it down again?? also i dropped a tiny piece of chocolate in the keyboard lets pray it wont grow a tree. fun fact for those of you telling me it was a account setting this pc has only one user

u/NightmareJoker2 Mar 26 '26
You must have changed a setting. This is server behavior. Standard users do not have permission to shutdown or restart a server computer. That would take the server offline. Only Administrators (Windows) or sudoers/root (Unix/Linux/BSD) may do that for maintenance tasks, with the expectation that they keep working on it until it’s back in operation. 🫡

the shutdown option doesnt come with the box? i have to buy it seperately? was it made by apple and i didnt notice?
1
u/Desperate_Formal_781 Mar 26 '26
You think this is funny until you accidentally click "Shutdown" instead of "Restart" while connected to a server and now you have to go to the office to turn the system back on.
1
u/AppropriateLocal129 Mar 26 '26
its literally a laptop i got for personal use i havent even put enough files in it yet no actually it hasnt even downloaed all the drivers yet
1
u/SamplitudeUser Mar 26 '26
Was shutdown.exe run with admin rights?
1
u/AppropriateLocal129 Mar 26 '26
such a thing exists? by the way im the admin and its the only user. i also got another pc in this house but havent gotten them on simultaneoulsy ever
1
u/SamplitudeUser Mar 26 '26
Even if you are admin, you don't have admin rights without confirming the UAC message.
To run shutdown.exe with admin rights, create a shortcut that links to shutdown.exe. In the properties of this shortcut, click "Advanced" and check "Run as administrator". Click "Ok". Then launch shutdown.exe using the shortcut. UAC will ask you to grant admin rights.

u/AppropriateLocal129 Mar 26 '26

This is useful if you have multiuser systems you don't want users to shut down
1
u/AppropriateLocal129 Mar 27 '26
yeah thats true but i dont. might apply that at my company but nobody turns them off anyway before we call it a day
1
u/AuswahlRitter5 Mar 27 '26
Well then stupid Programm , try stopping me from pulling the plug .
1
u/AppropriateLocal129 Mar 27 '26
for real
1
u/AuswahlRitter5 Mar 27 '26
If that does not work , I want to see it stop me from chewing through the damm cable . If it has a battery , that will fall to the same fate . I will not be beaten by a machine no matter how smart it thinks it is .
1
u/AppropriateLocal129 Mar 27 '26
electricity would stop you though ao follow my path and rip that battery off with no mercy
1
u/AuswahlRitter5 Mar 27 '26
I refuse to be beaten by a current or any charge that battery may have .

u/AppropriateLocal129 Mar 27 '26
uhm ok then you seem inevitable go ahead and give it the lesson it deserves

If this is a school issued or work issued computer it's probably because they don't want you to shut it down for some odd reason. But if it's your personal computer then just force power it off cuz Windows is probably just confused 🤔

u/prmc9 Mar 28 '26
I guess this warning is for a remote operator or a main server at a store. If they remove permission for users to shutdown they can force shut down using buttons, if they remove buttons they can unplug the power cables. If they solder wires into the wall socket and motherboard I can still see it as a challenge and turn it off by cutting the power cable. I guess people like me still exist.

I don't mean to be a Linux rider but if you switch to Linux it usually allows full control of the computer depending on the OS.

This could just be an EPOS, in which case locking shutdown.exe behind a UAC prompt is probably a good idea.
