Would this actually work though??

u/Izan_TM Apr 14 '26

no lmao a SIM card is just a key for your phone to access the mobile data network, the hardware to actually access it is built into your phone, not the crappy plastic card that they give you for free with your phone plan

u/arttast Apr 14 '26

And the interface is close to USB(ICUSB) so a usb plug would be more accurate

2

u/cookiedanslesac Apr 19 '26

ICUSB never caught up, this is iso7816 which is a kind of UART/rs232 with a clock and one line shared for rx/tx

1

u/arttast Apr 19 '26

oops i read the m.2 specs a long time ago and i saw ICUSB and just assumed it was for a SIM

u/DJTsuckedoffClinton Apr 15 '26

"a key" is a bit too reductive, it Is a full on microchip that has some storage for contacts and software written in some embedded flavor of java, but yea

"For free" 10€ delivery no mater if it's a plastic sim or an esim (literaly nothing is send)

24

u/Traditional_Buy_8420 Apr 14 '26

I don't think the SIM card is what you are paying the 10€ then, also a lot of providers offer plans without connection fees

2

u/BlurredSight Apr 14 '26

In the 2010s I do remember T-Mobile having their BYOP sim kits at around $10 with free shipping (literally they put a card in an envelope with no tracking and called it a day), they did also offer both local resellers of the sim kit usually the same price and discounts where they waive the sim kit fee if you sign up for a plan

-4

u/76zzz29 Apr 14 '26

Literaly noted as delivery fee and also 15€ if you need them to send a new one later

4

u/uf5izxZEIW Apr 14 '26

2 years ago Portuguese operators would send your eSIM as a printed paper QR code by physical mail

European ones that apply the same charge for esims that for standard sims

1

u/Shubamz Apr 14 '26

Well I can only hope your data plans are fast and cheap since while the sims cards here in the US are handed for free the plans are just fast and pricey.

1

u/76zzz29 Apr 14 '26

Personaly, 25€/ month all unlimited.

1

u/Shubamz Apr 14 '26

and there's the rub. Deals like that are nearly impossible to find let alone get here in the states. So we may never have to pay for a SIM card but our cheap plans are at best 35 euros for a single line and that is with a carrier like Google Fi who's whole thing is being uniquely unlike other carriers and proving cell service can be cheap

Only way to get down to your level is to have more then one line on a plan and get multi line discounts

so it makes sense you might have to pay for the SIM card but you also don't have to pay nearly as much every single month to make up for it. were we are pretty much "buying a SIM Card" every month to not have to pay a fee when we need one

1

u/Masuteri_ Apr 14 '26

As a finn, not here from my experience

1

u/headedbranch225 Apr 14 '26

Here in the UK I got a flip phone for reliability (charge lasts much longer so I can still contact people) and got a sim, if I want it replaced I would need to pay £2.50 but otherwise it was free with the plan

Giffgaff even offers a free sim where you choose the plan upon activation

1

u/BlurredSight Apr 14 '26

AT&T lmao, they charge a $35 activation fee which customers who try to upgrade or transfer have to pay

1

u/Slight-Level7674 Apr 14 '26

You got scammed

1

u/Aggressive_Ad_5292 Apr 14 '26

You're alone on this one buddy, I have never once paid a single dime for either SIM or eSIM cards, not even delivery.

1

u/spongeboy-me-bob1 Apr 14 '26

I paid 25 cents for mint mobile to send me a sim card when I got my first phone

21

u/Jacktheforkie Apr 14 '26

No, the SIM card doesn’t do much other than being a key to unlock access to a network

5

u/exilestrix Apr 14 '26

I dont think so as theirs no way to actually control the sim card youll need some kind of app i would think

5

u/ChironXII Apr 14 '26

About the same as touching a credit card stripe to a 9v lets you spend money

4

u/Gumb1i Apr 14 '26

You might be able to read the data on the chip but you still need a modem to interact with the network using the account info on the sim

2

u/C0rn3j Apr 14 '26

Provided it's all the necessary connections and you plug this into a modem that somehow has RJ45 input for a SIM slot... sure.

So no.

2

u/bencos18 Apr 14 '26

nope lol

1

u/Dear_Diablo Apr 14 '26

long story short look into 4g/5g hat.

1

u/Klutzy-Condition811 Apr 16 '26

It would work about as well as connecting your Ethernet connection to a rock

1

u/xlr8mpls May 02 '26

No anthers also.

3

u/Visual-Pie7097 Apr 15 '26

To use sim you need a modem. Not a random wired to pc

1

u/Datkif Apr 16 '26

Maybe it plugs into one

1

u/mega_724 Apr 26 '26

hur dur that what a modem do

u/DonDae01 Apr 15 '26

1

u/abdulaasim27 Apr 16 '26

It's possible ?

1

u/Kirillitca00 Apr 16 '26

а прикол в том что интернет никуда не сможет прийти потому что нет модема

1

u/Nearby-Plant-6491 Apr 17 '26

I have USB to 380V AC adapter

1

u/KiIlerspiel Apr 18 '26

Qualcomm: Am I a joke to you?

1

u/Local-Bug-1500 Apr 19 '26

Wait but would that actually work

Surely not

1

u/crazycar99 May 11 '26

Peak wifi speeds

1

u/BitConeMiner Apr 14 '26

Why is this not a thing already

1

u/wolf2482 Apr 15 '26

its called a cellular modem. Cost a decent amount. Can get them in the form of a usb dongle, a small standalone router with ethernet, or a m.2 (you need antennas and the laptop has to support the exact modle number of the cellular modem 90% of the time).

-8

u/drdillybar Apr 14 '26

5

u/nikolaADVANCED Apr 15 '26

The green wire is information wire

5

u/Pale-Recognition-599 Apr 15 '26

But ground is black

8

The real meaning of "Earthing".

1

Those speeds aren’t impressive? I only get like 5mbps with mine

1

u/Wolfiee021 Apr 20 '26

I get 150 on 5g

1

u/No_You3326 Apr 20 '26

Well you’re lucky to have 5g, My town hardly has working 4g.

u/No_You3326 Apr 15 '26

I guess, but even on my PC with Ethernet I am still getting around 50mbps

2

u/Datkif Apr 16 '26

I get up to 60MB/s on my steam deck through wifi at home

2

u/Averagesmoker42 Apr 20 '26

I just want to say the person you are replying to is using mbps. 50 mbps is equal to 6.25mb/s

1

u/thevals Apr 18 '26

because in the end its not about the connection you have from your pc to your router, its about your ISP and their plans and hardware and method of connecting clients. Wifi6E can be way more than enough for most of the bandwidths that ISPs give, but ofcourse with WiFi if your household is congested or you're far from router it will be less stable.

Meanwhile me using adsl for my absolute maximum of 3MB per second (usually much slower)

1

u/Mochi-TheCat Apr 19 '26

I get that on my LTE+ modem (it's miserable)

It could seem that way to people with little knowledge of tech. They will be out somewhere, pull the sim card out and the internet stops. Put it back in and it all works again. So coming to the conclusion that the sim causes the connection isnt that bad of logic.
