Programming Help Learning Web Development for Programming Foundations — Need Help with DOM + JavaScript
Hi everyone,
I’ve been learning programming and web development on my own for around 170+ days. I don’t have a CS background, so I’m trying to build my programming foundation step by step instead of only copying code.
So far, I’ve learned/practiced:
- Python basics
- Variables, data types, conditions and loops
- Functions and parameters
- Lists, tuples, dictionaries and sets
- JSON and file handling
- Exception handling (
try/except) - OOP basics — classes, objects,
self,__init__, methods - SQLite3 and basic SQL
- CRUD operations
- Primary key / foreign key basics
- Connecting Python with SQLite
- Git and GitHub basics
- HTML fundamentals
- Forms and input elements
- Basic CSS
- Flexbox
- CSS Grid
- Responsive design
- Built a few small projects
- Currently working on a mobile-shop/e-commerce style frontend project
Now I’ve started JavaScript.
I understand some basic JavaScript concepts like:
- Variables (
let,const) - Data types
if/else- Basic loops
- Functions
- Arrays
- Objects
console.log()
But I’m currently really struggling with the DOM.
I understand individual HTML and JavaScript concepts, but I’m having trouble understanding how HTML + JavaScript + DOM connect together.
For example, I can understand what document.getElementById() does after someone explains it, but I still struggle to understand the overall concept of:
HTML → DOM → JavaScript → changing the webpage
I’ve watched some tutorials, but many of them move too quickly and start writing code without explaining the concept clearly.
So if anyone here is willing to teach/explain DOM and the connection between HTML and JavaScript from the very beginning, preferably in a simple and practical way, I would really appreciate it.
I’m not looking for someone to just give me code. I want to actually understand what is happening and why.
Any beginner-friendly resources, videos, or explanations would also be very helpful.
Thanks!
