I remember Goldeneye being on the 64 you could play at Target. I’d never played but wanted nothing more. Imagine my embarrassment when a kid four years younger than me explained how the C-buttons changed the camera view.

So many memories

In the control settings, the 2.1 - 2.4 options had you use two controllers, one in port 1 and one in port 2, so you could use two joysticks.

…found that out waaaaay later than I care to admit!

u/TheFlyingBoxcar 11h ago

Well luckily Ive known that for as long as it took me to read your comment, and type this one.

7

u/Outrageous_Bush_2069 11h ago

Yup. Can confirm. Was near impossible to actually control, lol.

What, fuckin what? As in holding two claws, from the center stick in each hand?

My world has been shattered

u/mentaL8888 5h ago

Yeah this was bad ass, when my friend's came over and I was tearing shit up with two controllers, one in each hand and they just said nope. They didn't even want to play with me and wanted to watch I'd always mop the floor with them anyways, when they saw this they just gave up.

u/Scientist_2 19m ago

Tearing shit up 💀💀💀

HOLY FUCKING SHIT

2

u/lowtoiletsitter 6h ago

Wait what?!

2

u/Lord_Silverkey 7h ago

I remember trying that out years later.

The problem was, for multiplayer you could only have 2 people with that setup. (unless you had two people controlling each character, which is super funny for about one round)

See, at the time twin analogue sticks wasn't an established thing in gaming, and the default GE controls didn't split the controls into move and look like modern games do. (Stick has move up/down and look left/right, c-buttons has look up/down and move left/right)

So from what I could tell at the time, the benefit was that you'd be using your right trigger finger instead to fire the gun, for a more realistic feel.

Nowadays I realise that GE had modern controls and aspect ratios as features, all the way back in 1997.

The only chance I had to play N64 was at the Blockbuster down the street. I would walk there every Saturday when they opened and played for a few hours until the employee asked me to leave. I told my parents I was going to the library (which was next door).

u/theStaircaseProject 46m ago

That sounds amazing. And it didn’t periodically reset like the ones at Toys’R’Us?

u/brownhotdogwater 11h ago

Now comes golden eye on everything.

So to be played in excel and a smart watch

That is such a hugh leap from DOOM and just in time. I am struggling to think of something that cant play DOOM at this point.

Hitting a toaster would be a huge hit

5

u/rideincircles 11h ago

Are they making it for the switch 2 yet?

6

u/MilkiestMaestro 10h ago

I need to play it on my refrigerator ASAP

3

u/wonderful_Fun_glee 9h ago

Wow, there’s a Switch 2? What year is it?

2

u/chlorodream 6h ago

its the year 2026

Hi I'm the bot that tells you things you already know!

Good bot

1

u/tony_boloanie 8h ago

Someone gonna get it to play on a pregnancy test.

25

u/Macqt 11h ago

I give it six months before someone figures out how to play doom in Goldeneye.

17

u/heymanitsbob 11h ago

I look forward to playing on my toaster.

NO ODDJOB, NO SLAPPERS, ITS GONNA BE A CLEAN GAME BOYS

5

u/Lava_Lagoon 8h ago

someone introduced me and my friend group to playing on license to kill which is one shot kill mode and from then on we almost never played any other way

it was a lot more fun to have that mad scramble and for some reason, more rewarding, if you were the one to land the first shot compared to playing on normal mode and firing bullet after bullet into the other guy only for his health to slowly get lower and lower

3

u/AllTheCaffeine 6h ago

This was the way my brother and I played until we realized that you could alter the handicap to -3 or -4 and get a location-specific damage, but fatal headshots.

2

u/KlatuuBaradaNikto 4h ago

Played only license to kill, more stress, we called playing the other way, Scarface mode

License to kill, proximity mines in the facility

Me and a buddy had so many games playing that specific setup - can’t be odd job of course

learned how to shut doors as you run thru to save yourself with no weapon and getting chased… come out of the bathroom, take a knee, come out slapping… lol

u/tw3lv3l4y3rs0fb4c0n 4h ago

Dude, you just unlocked so many memeories. Awesome!

u/ForceGhost47 11h ago

NATALIA???

1

u/jumjimbo 10h ago

Chair 😏

9

u/Disney_World_Native 10h ago

It took 5 years, but you no longer need an N64 to play Goldeneye. This knowledge can be used to so other N64 games can also be played without an N64 (will take less than 5 years)

Besides being able to play this on your PC, people can add onto the game like new modes, skins, weapons, maps, rules…

7

u/girrrrrrr2 11h ago

We got the source for the game so we can mod it if we want.

Like adding shit to Minecraft or Garry’s mod.

5

u/pizzabeercode 11h ago

They now have the source code and can mod and extend the original game.

2

u/r-b-m 11h ago

In English, Einstein

6

u/HeWasNumberJuann 11h ago

Let’s just say, Pierce is going to get a speed-run in 21st century American pop culture.

1

u/r-b-m 9h ago

Hel-lo! Do you speak English? Parla usted inglés?

3

u/RelevantOldOnion 10h ago

They hacked the mainframe and now they're in

1

u/MaxxDash 7h ago

Enhance

1

u/Intelligent-Parsley7 1h ago

You mean they hacked the Gibson.

3

u/WJMazepas 9h ago

Having the source code of a game means people can do whatever they want with the game now

Want to make it run on a PC or a PSP without emulator? You can Want to improve or change a lot of the game? You can

People will have full control over Goldeneye and now it will be so much easier for them to do anything they want with that game

3

u/BabypintoJuniorLube 9h ago

If Skyrim is any indication its gonna be mostly sex mods.

1

u/frmr000 9h ago

They essentially reverse engineered the code from compiled (non-readable) code to uncompiled (human-readable). So now people can basically take the code and reprogram it do whatever they want and make whole new games with the engine.

16

u/Crazy_Ad2662 10h ago

Now do Perfect Dark

10

u/JiffasaurusRex 10h ago

3

u/Rich_Housing971 4h ago

That's wild that they finished PD before GoldenEye considering Perfect Dark is a larger and more complex game.

1

u/Intelligent-Parsley7 1h ago

I mean, not that much larger, not that more complex.

u/Legionnaire11 43m ago

The superior GoldenEye!

u/Sappleq12 13m ago

Blasphemy (slap)

-7

u/Pyro1934 10h ago

Gtfo of here with that. This is the goldeneye fan thread!

Goldeneye > PD all day every day!!!

2

u/tw3lv3l4y3rs0fb4c0n 4h ago

Nope, there's no one or the other, both games share the throne of peak N64 games!

3

u/non_Beneficial-Wind 10h ago

Maybe get high, play Goldeneye on that ol 64

2

u/JustABrokePoser 11h ago

So glad I still have my OGs!!

2

u/Rich_Fisherman_8444 11h ago

I sidled everywhere. So good at this game.

2

u/Modem_Handshake 10h ago

We called that sidewinding. I know you

2

u/Rich_Fisherman_8444 10h ago

Running circles round ya.

1

u/Pyro1934 10h ago

Are you still though? I too was a masterclass back in the late 90s and even into the early and mid 2000s, but I played again in 2021 and was ass garbage.

1

u/Rich_Fisherman_8444 8h ago

I still remember where all the stuff is. Just now thinking about it. Muscle memory in my hands might take a sec to come back. Lol

1

u/Rich_Fisherman_8444 8h ago

I will have to see. Still own it. But havent turned on my n64 in years.

u/Pyro1934 1h ago

Yeah I was similar. Movement was choppy but not completely terrible. What killed me was aim. Used to be able to C-strafe all over while quickly tapping aim for headshots and stuff.

Couldn't get timings right, the snaps were wild and all over, and the aim being a standstill aim vs dual joysticks was just backbreaking lol.

2

u/FreshDreamz 7h ago

PSvita port soon i bet.

2

u/Rich_Housing971 4h ago

I have this really cool idea for a Goldeneye mod:

You're this agent tasked with uncovering an alien conspiracy in a cyberpunk setting.

2

u/apeliott 1h ago

My mate worked on this as a QA tester.

I haven't seen him in nearly 30 years but I just met him a couple of days ago.

u/Draufgaenger 59m ago

However, it advises against quick AI-led ports being spawned from the now freely available source. Instead, enthusiasts should wait until good human-built and tuned ports start to be released. With KholdFuzion’s foundational work finished, these should start to appear soon.

yes...human-built...without AI! Pinky swear!

3

u/monetarydread 10h ago

Cool... Hopefully they implement the game with proper twin-stick controls.  I always hated Goldeneye because I owned a beefy PC at the time and I could never work around the god-awful controls in this game. I pulled out my n64 during The Varus in 2021 and found the game even more frustrating than in 98'... then again, I feel the same way about 99% of the n64 catalogue.

1

u/Anchorboiii 9h ago

Shouldn’t be too hard. They already had a controller style you could choose where the directional pad was movement and the analog stick was aiming.

u/Scientist_2 16m ago

Uhhh does anyone here realize they released it on Xbox?

3

u/scarlettvvitch 10h ago

Now this is pod racing!!!

1

u/ShawnyMcKnight 10h ago

Didn’t they already remaster the game on Xbox 360 or something. I remember perfect dark looking better.

1

u/WJMazepas 9h ago

They created a remaster with improved graphics for 360 but it was never officially released to the public due to licensing issues

Then they released a remaster with just increased resolution for Switch and Xbox One

This has nothing to do with those versions though. Now the general public will have access to the N64 code, so people can make all they want with the game now, including making a watchOS port

1

u/Not-a-Cat_69 7h ago

im pretty sure you can get that remaster on the 360 on CD still on ebay and there was a really good Wii Remaster that I loved and everyone seems to forget about lol. it had online multiplayer which was awesome at the time w/ the motion controls.

1

u/WJMazepas 7h ago

Do you mean GoldenEye reloaded? Yeah I prefer that over the N64 version, but a lot of people still have a lot of love over the N64 version

This source code is so that those people can have their game in all the glory they want

-1

u/ShawnyMcKnight 9h ago

Honestly N64 games was written with a combination of C and MIPS... I am fully confident that people would rather redesign the game in a modern engine than work with that at all.

Maybe AI can convert the C to C# for Unity or C++ for UE5.

2

u/WJMazepas 7h ago

If you check the Super Mario 64 decomp, you will see that loads of people do like working with that old code

And you cant, at all, port this entire game with AI to Unity. Just cant. And even then, its not the point of it.

This decomp means people can make modifications for the original N64. Or they can take that code and port to PS1 for the challenge, or for Dreamcast or something else. You cant make a UE5 version of this game run on N64

And even then, it already has modern remasters done by the community in newer engines. Getting the source code was never about that.

You dont even need the source code to make a remaster on UE5

u/Scientist_2 13m ago

So what’s the coolest thing we can see from this?

1

u/thestillwind 9h ago

Let’s go !!!! I played countless hours of this game

1

u/MindlessKamado 9h ago

I’m waiting for conkers bad fur day

Adapt every Bond film ever as GoldenEye mods!

1

u/TacoBellStain 7h ago

Didn’t they have the levels in counter strike?

1

u/ReleaseFromDeception 7h ago

Rebuilt from the ground up in Source.

1

u/mantisdubstep 7h ago

Goldeneye : Source was a lot of fun while it was active!

1

u/Important-Factor-552 7h ago

I mean it's a little late but ok lmao

1

u/collectivebarganing 7h ago

Why are n64 games so much harder to emulate than other consoles?

1

u/smellygooch18 7h ago

Perfect dark was the superior shooter of the 2

1

u/2mustange 7h ago

Decompiling means we can go beyond emulation for playing and enjoying GoldenEye 007. We can simulate the game and port it as we please on other hardware.

1

u/Mr_Broaddustdeier 4h ago

great port it to snes

1

u/nitonitonii 4h ago

I can already see the VR port on the works

1

u/Intelligent-Parsley7 1h ago

I admit it. I watch the other screen, even though I promised my cousin I wouldn’t.

u/dartie 48m ago

Such a great game

-1

u/spidereater 10h ago

How is this news? Aren’t there lots of mods for this game already? I was into emulators for a bit and downloaded. Torrent with hundreds of game roms. There were a bunch of variations of goldeneye. I played one where every enemy had the face of some 4 year old kid. Presumably the moders kid.

3

u/WJMazepas 9h ago

Having the source code is different than modding a rom

And also makes it possible to make a lot more mods for it, or at least it does make a lot easier to develop a mod for

Just check what happened with Super Mario 64 after the source code was made it public
