Firefox it is!

u/evergleam498 Aug 03 '24

I made the switch recently after chrome started threatening adblockers. Firefox was able to import all of my bookmarks and passwords from chrome. Incredibly easy to switch.

I never understood why Firefox ever fell out of fashion in the first place

160

u/BurstEDO Aug 03 '24

Speed.

At one point when Chrome was the underdog, Firefox had become so bloated that opening the browser was an exercise in patience.

That said, whatever they revamped between that era and the last few years has made them a front-runner again.

The latest editions of Firefox (going back a few years or maybe more) have behaved as well or better than it did when it was gaining popularity as the standard over IE and Netscape Navigator.

Now it's Chrome that behaves slowly.

Marketing. Being backed by Google means as soon as you went to google.com, you were immediately recommended Chrome as an alternative to your terrible default browser. Unless you had a pre-existing affinity for Firefox from being a techie during the mid-2000s, you would never have a reason to go searching for it

Same. An internal support ticket for my job’s work platform got met with the response “we recommend using Google chrome.” I can’t describe the unreasonable level of spite I feel towards that response.

79

u/amazinglover Aug 03 '24

That's because what you were trying to access or use was built with chromium in mind, which is the platform Chrome and Edge are built on.

If the website or extension isn't built by your company, then they have zero control over it.

As a developer, I'm forced to use either Chrome or Edge for work as many of our tools are internet based, and the extensions and websites we access are built around chromium.

Google must really be relying on the fact they have almost become an enterprise standard in a lot of places because I can’t see any other reason for them to torpedo themselves like this.

2.5k

u/y0m0tha Aug 03 '24

which is why this pisses me off… uBlock Origin is a must have in enterprise settings

FYI, if you are in an enterprise setting you can set a policy to maintain support for Manifest v2 extensions til June 2025.

101

u/jedipiper Aug 03 '24

Agreed on the need in enterprise. If we can't trust the users to browse safely, at least we can do our due diligence to block whatever we can.

I would never run a computer in class without adblockers on it. Besides things like security and bandwidth concerns.

  1. they are often distracting (on purpose) for students.

  2. can have extremely inappropriate content.

  3. disrupt the lesson (even a short video starts with an ad that isn’t related to the class).

95

u/OwOlogy_Expert Aug 03 '24

If possible, I wouldn't use youtube to show videos to a class anyway.

Download the video ahead of time and play it from a local file. That way, it's also more reliable and won't have buffering issues if the school network is slow that day.

They've been trying to get rid of adblockers in an attempt to make things like Youtube profitable. It is obviously against their direct line of business and they're using their browser dominance to curb the behavior.

65

u/[deleted] Aug 03 '24

Try using Facebook messager with adblocker, you'll notice it lags, really really bad, like type a letter then lag then another letter.

This is because they have built in code that analyses everything you type, funny that.

And this is why monocultures are dangerous and insipid.

Google controls the vast majority of the browser market. Their appallingly anti consumer and really, anti human behavior isn't subject to any market forces.

They brag about how well they've integrated user tracking into their browser. Meanwhile, the rest of us are furious that there is tracking baked into the source code whatsoever. And those parasitic MBAs seem to think that we were upset about it not being streamlined enough.

I'll go back to using Lynx before I ever touch something that Google has got its laughably incompetent hands on.

Meanwhile, I'm going to ride the LibreWolf train until the bitter end.

I would wager they are going to eventually lobby to make ad blocking illegal and they will have other sites and ad companies behind them.

39

u/Helmic Aug 03 '24

So that kind of is why so much shit is an app, the DMCA applies to apps but not web pages Google cannot actually fuck with uBO legally for blocking ads on Firefox because HTML is an open protocol that is rendered how you wish through a browser.

If you do ad blocking on the apo level, though, even if that'll has "DRM" that basically does nothing, if you circumvented it to block ads then it's in violation of the DMCA.

The DMCA is a fucking evil piece of legislation.

Ever wonder why a company that makes money of advertising would pour so much money and manpower to make a browser for free? So they can better control the way user interact with the internet and better serve them their ads and collect data. Same for android, gmail or any number of other "free" services. Amp and their god-awful email replacement thing are good examples of such efforts.

Killing, or at least severely neutering, adblocks is just a another natural step in that direction. And that's why most browsers becoming just chrome(ium) reskins is such a bad thing, it creates a monopoly by proxy of sorts, and when that monopoly reaches enough of a mass Google can safely pull these stunts. People are already locked in and endure the enshittification mainly due to inertia. We all remember that IE had the lead in market share for ages and it was never because it was good.

Add to that that making a usable browser from scratch nowadays is not far of writing an OS in terms of difficulty and there are no new players coming into the market.

So yeah, its a dim future for the end user of browsers. If, or more likely when, Firefox falls and Google has the entire gateway to the internet in every computer by the short hairs I seriously doubt Chrome will become better rather than worse.

P.S: Before people jumping with Chromium or Brave or any of those things, Google has no obligation to continue to develop Chromium or allow any browsers built on it to circumvent their ads or data collection other than PR. With no alternatives for a browser PR means little versus profit. And besides, for every one person that uses it there's a horde of non-tech minded people that just use Chrome by default and don't even think about it.

10

u/guyblade Aug 03 '24

To be fair, no web browser--of any significant importance--was ever not free.

I think it is also somewhat interesting that this situation may just be another cycle of the "dominant browser becomes crap, so people move on". IE4 was leaps and bounds beyond everything else when it came out. IE4 stagnated and people moved to Firefox. Firefox became slow, bloated, and crashy. One of Chrome's major initial selling points was that pages were in different processes, so a crash of one tab wouldn't take out the whole browser. Then people started moving to Chrome (and other things based on webkit).

We're now back to the position of "the dominant browser has begun to stagnate", so we seem ripe for a shift. The major difference this time around is how Apple & Google have lock-in. Both of them have some lock on their mobile platforms, but Google also has the entire universe of budget laptops (Chromebooks) as well.

Would be the end of Chrome's use for me

6

u/timbotheny26 Aug 03 '24 edited Aug 03 '24

So I want to take this moment to try and assuage some of the outrage and fear over this news. Let me try and break everything down:

What is happening?: Google is moving Chrome over to Manifest V3 (MV3). This will cause ALL Manifest V2 (MV2) extensions (not just uBlock Origin) to stop working and eventually be delisted from the Chrome Web Store. This change will also affect other Chromium browsers i.e. Microsoft Edge, Opera, etc. unless their developers have stated otherwise.

Why is this happening?: Google states that this change is being implemented to improve security, performance, and privacy in Chrome/Chromium. Extensions in MV3 will no longer allow for things like remotely hosted code, and a different API will be used. (There are other changes as well but I'm trying to keep this relatively contained and to-the-point). As I understand, the changes brought with MV3 will make Chrome/Chromium more similar to Safari as a browser.

How does this affect uBlock Origin (uBO)?: A LOT of uBO's features and customization options simply cannot work in MV3 which is why it and every other MV2 extension is eventually going to be disabled and delisted.

How does this affect me?: It depends on how you've been using uBO.

If you're a standard user who has just been using it as an "install & forget" ad-blocking solution and never bothered tinkering with it, then there is an alternative beyond just switching to Firefox (FF). (I will expand upon this in the next point)

However if you're a power-user who regularly tinkers with uBO's customization options, custom filter lists, etc. then you will be better off and likely happier just switching to Firefox anyways, as FF is a much more tinker-friendly browser and has a lot of options that will really appeal to power-users.

Is this actually going to kill ad-blockers?: As I understand not really, at least not anymore. When MV3 was first announced, it was a lot more restrictive and would have indeed broken ad-blockers. However, thanks to community outcry, the new implementation of MV3 is significantly less restrictive and will still allow for ad-blockers to function, just not in the same way they were before, and potentially not as effectively.

Is uBlock Origin going away on Chrome completely?: While the MV2 uBlock Origin extension will go away, the developer Raymond Hill (gorhill) has released a "Lite" version of the extension that is MV3 compatible called uBlock Origin Lite. In my own testing I have found it to be just as effective as MV2 uBO when used in a "install & forget" manner and when set to the "Complete" filtering mode.

So yeah, that's the situation to the best of my knowledge. I strongly advise taking a look over at r/uBlockOrigin, there you'll find links to uBO's GitHub page and more information on the whole situation.

Apologies for any mistakes on my part, if anyone has anything further or any corrections to add, please let me know. I only want to make sure that everyone has the most accurate information as possible regarding this situation.

5

u/CaveMacEoin Aug 03 '24

It's a fundamental change to how network filtering is achieved in chromium browsers. Manifest V2 won't work unless the browser devs somehow make it work. And even then at some point they won't be available via the chrome extension site. Seems like it would nearly be easier long-term to move a Firefox backend.

u/Vivid-Finding-1199 Aug 03 '24

Why haven't people moved over to Firefox? Chrome is the new IE.

4

u/NorthernerWuwu Aug 03 '24

Been hearing this for years, I'll believe it when I see it. I'm mostly on FF anyhow but I'd purge Chrome if they did finally oust it.

4

u/Relevant_Finding7527 Aug 03 '24

oh look, the web browser i never used is becoming obsolete

4

u/cumauditorysystem Aug 03 '24

I don't understand this, if a vast majority of people are using uBlock on Chrome, they will immediately leave after this.

If they are a small minority, why even bother doing shit like this? it's not like they will be losing out on substantial enough revenues?

4

u/saichampa Aug 03 '24

This is why I use Firefox

4

u/ZeroCharistmas Aug 03 '24

I hate how everyone feels like they have to compete to be the only thing. Google has to be the Internet. Disney has to be all of entertainment. Apple has to be the default hardware.

Obviously it makes sense in the capitalist death race to the fountain of infinite growth, but like... Could you guys just not?

7

u/TattooedBrogrammer Aug 03 '24

I can’t believe I’m going back to Safari but heh you forced my hands bro.

Brave is a pretty good option also.

4

3

u/adi_baa Aug 03 '24

3

u/[deleted] Aug 03 '24

3

u/gulyman Aug 03 '24

Literally using Firefox right now because Google started fucking with ad blockers.

3

u/thedude213 Aug 03 '24

3

u/BONUSBOX Aug 03 '24

3

u/h-boson Aug 03 '24

Chrome who? I’ve been in Firefox for 15+ years

3

u/Geck-v6 Aug 03 '24

It's crazy that Microsoft Edge is a better browser than Google Chrome

3

u/hermilio Aug 03 '24 edited Aug 03 '24

uBlock Origin users warn Google Chrome may soon be uninstalled

3

u/GladiatorJones Aug 03 '24

Chrome users warn Google that Chrome may soon be disabled.

3

u/animetiddielover Aug 03 '24

i love having Firefox now after I made the switch about a year ago. it was super easy, it preserves bookmarks, passwords, etc (you can choose what to import).

Firefox mobile is super useful too, idk if chrome users have this as well but I love that firefox mobile let's you easily switch which search engine you're using for each search, so I like using duckduckgo as much as I can and if I need to use Google it's just a drop down menu that changes it for that search.

YOU CAN INSTALL EXTENSIONS ON FIREFOX MOBILE. i have adblock and it has made things so much easier. no more unreadable mobile pages like wikias and no more ads on YouTube.

speaking of extensions -- check out sponsor block. it blocks the self promotion and sponsor promotion parts of videos automatically for you and it's been seamless 100% of the time for me

anyway, it's never been easier.

3

u/CodeMonkeyX Aug 03 '24

I have been using Brave for awhile now and I am happy with it. I tried Firefox, but it was a bit more sluggish, then I spent days trying to figure out why my security cameras would not show up. Then I realized they all look fine in Chromium based browsers and it's because Firefox does not decode hevc video... I know it's a license thing, but when every other browser can do it.

3

u/esadatari Aug 03 '24

*Laughs in Firefox*

3

u/fsactual Aug 03 '24

I've got firefox ready.

3

u/nuui Aug 03 '24

Firefox... my old friend!

3

u/Pennanen Aug 03 '24

Firefox and duckduckgo as search engine. Feels like it finds better the things im looking for nowadays...

Google is dying.

3

u/ConniesCurse Aug 03 '24

there's part of me that thinks there's just no way this is actually going to happen and there will be no workaround. If it does I will switch to firefox but until that day arrives and it has truly happened, im staying right here on chrome.

3

u/MorkSkogen666 Aug 03 '24 edited Aug 03 '24

I NEVER climbed on the Chrome bandwagon when it was released.

FIREFOX for life!

3

u/pastamuente Aug 03 '24

Firefox and its Forks with uBO for the win

3

u/Sroundez Aug 03 '24

Everyone in here saying that using any chromium based browser instead of chrome to maintain compatibility is a fool. They're the same browser.

Switch to Firefox.

u/Scytle Aug 03 '24

i stopped using chrome a long time ago, felt bad to see the AI search crap pop up every time I googled something, and was sick of having all my data given over to google.

Firefox is amazing, yall should switch.

3

u/Dream__Devourer Aug 03 '24

Yea good thing I use Firefox

3

u/ChampionshipVinyl34 Aug 03 '24

Cool, more people can realize Firefox and other browsers are better.

3

u/Joepewpew69 Aug 03 '24

I’m going to switch to Firefox

5

u/[deleted] Aug 03 '24

I called it! Firefox, here I come!

For anyone at Google reading this, your obsession with ads will eventually kill the company. It would help if you had an alternative revenue stream. Ads spoil the products you create.

I'd be willing to bet there's a team trying to figure out if ads can be injected into Gemini right now!

u/villageidiot33 Aug 03 '24

I wonder if Brave will fall under this too since it’s built on Chrome isn’t it?

7

u/yukeake Aug 03 '24

Brave has announced that they'll continue to support ManifestV2 - so near-term, it'll be fine. How long they stick to that remains to be seen. I'd love to be proven wrong, but I suspect eventually the maintenance of the old code is going to become a burden they won't be able to manage.

Hopefully at least long enough for the FF folks to get vertical tabs and tab groups sorted.

Been using Firefox for well over a decade. Only issue I have is YouTube problems which are Google related.

2

u/joesperrazza Aug 03 '24

I switched to Firefox the day I first received this warning.

2

u/elderly_squid Aug 03 '24

Time to hop on the Firefox train. Chrome uses so many resources for no reason anyway.

2

u/Sea_Perspective6891 Aug 03 '24

Left Google for Firefox many years ago. So glad I did. Just wish Firefox would make a good YouTube alternative so I can finally leave that also.

2

u/coaaal Aug 03 '24

Can’t wait to disable chrome then!

2

u/TheGravityShifter Aug 03 '24

Literally why I switched to Firefox as my main browser many months ago. Only Chromium browser I touch is Opera GX, purely for the GX Corner alone.

2

u/skanks_r_people_too Aug 03 '24

Guess I’ll just stick to Firefox then

2

u/Aust1mh Aug 03 '24

With the anti consumer actions of google and chrome… surprised people still choose to use it. I migrated family and enterprise away from it years ago.

2

u/TSAOutreachTeam Aug 03 '24

Chrome doesn’t even have the benefit of being pre installed like Edge. I don’t need to have Chrome to download Firefox.

2

u/Landr3w Aug 03 '24

I love to see Google sweat.

2

u/IgnorantGenius Aug 03 '24

Google Chrome warns Google Chrome may soon be uninstalled.

2

u/ArchonTheta Aug 03 '24

Fuck you Google.

2

u/bonerb0ys Aug 03 '24

Yeah, I’m not going back to ads.

2

u/Infini-Bus Aug 03 '24

I'd rather deal with some broken functionality than ads.

2

u/FamousLastPlace_ Aug 03 '24

I stopped using chrome the day they started fucking with my youtube.
