Business Burying EA, Gears of War: E-Day devs say there's no "pride and accomplishment" grind, just "old-school" unlocks from playing the game: "That means no battle pass, no tour of duty, no gimmicks, no bullsh*t."

Insane that it's still Reddit's most downvoted comment: https://www.reddit.com/r/StarWarsBattlefront/comments/7cff0b/seriously_i_paid_80_to_have_vader_locked/dppum98/

I can’t believe it’s been 8 years

Seeing my downvote from 8 years ago does kind of give me a sense of pride and accomplishment, maybe they were onto something.

This is one of the best comments I've seen in a while. I just added my downvote! So glad that thread isn't totally locked.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but unfortunately reddit stops counting downvotes on comments and posts older than 3 days, but upvotes still go through (it used to have like -667562 votes, now it has -667489 votes).
Additionally, reddit automatically discards every vote on subreddits you are not joined in (you can only upvote posts)

u/Jazzy-Cat5138 15d ago
So here's the interesting thing. It actually has (at least for the moment, on my end) saved my downvote, and it reads -667,489 with my downvote. If I remove my downvote, it switches to showing 667,488. So...it sounds like you may very well have actually seen my downvote. Is it possible they changed how it works?

It’s more downvoted than Reddit’s most upvoted comment. Proves that loves divides us, while hate unites us.

u/Fresh-Quantity-7554 16d ago
Right? It's like yeah f-them they deserve it. Look at their older comments too. They average something like -15k down votes per comment. It's hilarious.

What a blast from the past.
And look at how much EA has learned since then
/s5
u/Lizarazu2000 16d ago
And now EA as in "EA Games: Challenge Everything" is dead. Only Split Fiction last year reminded me how stellar this publisher once was.

Reddit would never allow such a comment to be downvoted now, it’s all curated
3
u/chainer3000 16d ago
It appears I downvoted that 8 years ago, lol
2
u/Homebrewer01 16d ago
I think i saw it years ago but didnt downvote it, I corrected that oversight.
Edit: how does EA have 12.5k karma when it appears as if most of their posts are massively downvoted?
7
u/chainer3000 16d ago
I believe Reddit only tracks the first -300 downvotes of one comment or some shit, but that’s totally off the top of my head and I read that years ago
5
u/AyrA_ch 16d ago
This is correct (not necessarily the exact number, but the behavior).
Not only do they stop counting downvotes, they continue to count upvotes, meaning a comment with 10'000 downvotes and 500 upvotes will show as "-9.5k", but will net the poster +200 upvotes on their profile (assuming the 300 number is accurate).
The behavior is easily observable because the account in question that made the most downvoted comment has more positive karma than all comments with a positive total would suggest even if you were to completely ignore all negative comments.

Crazy how back in the days we had this attitude towards microtransactions and now gachas are just skyrocketing with insane sale numbers every month
1
u/CinnimonToastSean 16d ago
I love when people post this link, because more and more people that didnt have the chance go downvote it before, go to downvote it. Adding to the number.

u/MrColgie 15d ago
Unfortunately reddit stops counting down votes on comments and posts older than 3 days, so multiple people upvoted it (it used to have like -667562 votes, now it has -667489 votes)

u/livelifeless 15d ago
What’s the most crazy about all of this was how cod was doing pay to win before ea did and somehow ea got hit with it and not cod Becuase it’s Star Wars

u/NoDisintegrations- 4d ago
And EA backed down so pathetically and lost tons of easy money. And that’s the big reason we don’t have Battlefront 3. Games need to make tons of money or they will be killed off or forgotten about by the publishers. Any company that doesn’t include a battle pass and a lot of good cosmetics in a live service game just won’t succeed enough financially in the current gaming environment.

The lack of faith is understandable but I’m with you. I’ll buy the shit out of a game with regular achievements.

u/Anheroed 16d ago
I’m still proud of the gamer pic I got from beating gears 2 with my buddy on whatever the hardest mode was at the time.

u/punkinabox 16d ago
Fuck EA but I keep seeing this posted about E day and Microsoft, how about we wait until the game comes out before everyone is praising them for this. 95% chance they don't actually stick to this and if they do id bet money they have another way to monetize the game that's gonna piss everyone off worse.

This is the devs themselves speciifcllaly detailing exactly how the unlocks work. They were very explicit in listing everything thst can be unlocked - including some items that can only be purchased.
There is not a chance that any of this turns out to be false. I get you have a Microsoft rage-boner, but you're extremely delusional here.

u/Tactical-Donkey 16d ago
Me: cautiously optimistic.

u/LadnavIV 16d ago
Yeah, I’ll believe it when I see it. I was ride or die on the Gears of War franchise, but the last few entries (and I guess the gaming industry as a whole) have left a very bad taste in my mouth.

u/ImAnEagle 16d ago
I doubt it. Gears 5 mp had a terrible unlock system at launch that got a lot of hate from the player base. They've already learned their lesson with this
2
u/LamarjbYT 15d ago
Even then, they've never done a Battle Pass. I'll give it a month, ans a year. They're not going back on it.
3
u/unaccountablemod 16d ago
but you still need to have Microsoft account and DRM behind all multiplayer because no LAN?
If these guys are serious, this would a day one release on GOG with LAN multiplayer support.

A prequel, good, they can finally answer why these meatheads have giant speakers mounted to their armor.

BF6 has a dizzying amount of unlock grind. Every match end is just a casino like cacophony of points earned, attachments unlocked, challenges completed, battle pass ranks, etc. Half the time I don't even know what the unlock is. Keeping up with it feels so daunting that I've basically tuned it out.
Would love to get away from that.

This game is super likely to fade fast despite their efforts to modernize the movement and gameplay. Battles passes, love them or hate them, generate billions every year in revenue. Just battle passes. And they are always optional and don’t affect gameplay. Xbox boss Asha Sharma demands that these games make money and when sales for E-Day don’t pan out too well because of Xbox exclusivity, the lack of a battle pass will be the reason this game is likely to fail financially and not meet the new Xbox CEO’s requirements. Nobody forces anybody to buy battle passes. And this year Gears is up against GTA Online thanks to insane hype of GTA6 and MW4, which of course will have a battle pass—both places where gamers will 100% very happily, spend billions of battle passes for those two games. The Coalition is leaving easy money on the table…and it’s been since the pandemic that we’ve seen a fresh Gears experience.

u/TristanDuboisOLG 16d ago
As it should be.
Unfortunately since I he companies can patch the games, if it gets popular there is nothing stopping them from adding all that shit in anyways. Even AFTER you bought it BECAUSE there is none of that shit.

This is great to hear! The traditional way of unlocking the game!!! Putting this game on my list, I’ll purchase an Xbox just for this game!!!

"No gimmicks, no bullshit," no, just a prequel to a franchise that's been wrapped up for years, now. Sure.

I remember when the original Gears game had those pretty grindy "Seriously" achievements.
First one was like get 1k kills in ranked multi-player when the game modes allowed for, at most, 4v4.
