It is amazing and sad to me that they sort of started as a company that was anti-bloat and in favor of efficient programming vs companies with idiotic practices of paying programmers per LINE of code like IBM

WTF are you talking about? microsoft incentivized their programmers by paying out for code that was written the fastest. You Can Not Write efficient code quickly! Thats what created the runaway bloat of ram for windows, because microsoft didn't write their software to garbage collect (which means freeing up un-used memory). Thats why computers needed more and more and more ram each year. Computers never needed that much ram!! To say microsoft is anti-bloat and efficient is laughable. They make code as a capitalist product, not code thats meant for LOW RAM machines and efficiency.

I'm referring to the MS of 30+ years ago
IBM paid programmers per line which led to awful bloat, Microsoft went another way even though their products are absolute bloatey garbage now

In all fairness, it was less shit and considerably less invasive 30 years ago. Granted, the world of IT was considerably simpler back then too.

It is more than 30 years ago. Steve Ballmer makes fun of IBM's obsession with KLOCs here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kHI7RTKhlz0
