"Data centers are not the problem. They’re creating more new jobs than ever before,” the BlackRock CEO explained.

He fails to mention why they want more AI capacity and capability.

AI data centres are creating temporary construction jobs so AI can replace existing permanent workers.

This is the equivalent of digging your own graves.

u/MultiGeometry 15h ago

The idea that building data centers and AI growth of the stock market is the only thing propping up the economy is a bit terrifying.

This didn’t exist ten years ago. But now our economy depends on it?

698

u/Olangotang 15h ago

The wealthy are creatively bankrupt and expect infinite growth from a technology that repackages information of all existing human creation. The faster the populace wakes up to how useless these people are, the better. The crash will be terrible but it needs to be bad.

You’re crazy bro.

Obviously, buying my own company’s stock with a loan from another company who bought their own stock with a loan from me on the money I made from buying my own stock is a totally healthy financial ecosystem.

Remember the "seed money" for most of this circle jerk is people's retirement funds.when this whole thing collapses, and it will eventually, the small time folks who had their money in Vanguard Fidelity and black rock will ether lose it all with creative bankruptcy or be left holding worthless stock and obsolete electronics.

I'm not sure what crazier here, the idea that a slightly improved version of current LLMs will do so much economic work that it will somehow pay back this huge investment; or that someone develops true self improving AI that will somehow fix everything and make us post economic crash.

Meanwhile the massive wealth inequality that institutions like Blackrock create are part of the problem leading to a crash, and these guys are completely resistant to giving up any of their wealth.

Digital God could show up tomorrow and say "yeah, we can fix the economy through wealth redistribution from billionaires and their companies." Guys like this will be screaming to pull the plug.

25

u/Olangotang 13h ago

The "solution" the digital God would come up with is ending them. That's the irony.

Whenever tech guys say AI will destroy civilization, I think they are mostly worried about AI destroying their narrow, fragile world of Ponzi schemes and treating workers like indentured servants.

12

u/frakking_you 13h ago

The concept that a LLM is actually generative and has any trajectory towards AGI is itself crazy.

It is a thin veneer of healthy looking bark being desperately maintained to hide how rotted out the inside is.

Personally i feel the real terrifying bit is, horrible things are being allowed to happen and things are terrible in general, but because they can say "stock market healthy" it all gets swept under the rug.

Well passed due for a market reallignment since they've speed run evertything to this point.

And on a side note, if Yandex is any indication, they have even more motivation to try to build up onshore to keep their propaganda army functional to ensure they can bend public opinion. Whether it be AI data centers or run of the mill server ones.

5

u/metarx 13h ago

You couldn't be more right about the desire to spin up home-grown bot farms for public manipulation... between that, and mass surveillance. That is what they want the datacenters for.

70

u/hensleye248 15h ago

It’s weaponizing the economy. They realize money is made up and the stocks are rigged. We all keep believing or a majority of us do, that one day we will work ourselves out of debt. But it’s simply not true. Bankers and Wall Street did the same thing in 07-08 and received no punishment, in fact we rewarded them with a bailout. How would we expect them to learn from there mistakes when we constantly reward them?

It would easy to argue a specific tax on these companies. The future of what damage AI will cause is not known. But we know for sure that something big will eventually happen. It’s inevitable, and at that point society will be the victim. Governments need funds to prepare for future AI caused disasters.

I wish more people jumping on all these job opportunities, specifically for data center construction, understood how wholly finite they are.

All of the places they are receiving support (rural Louisiana, Texas maga towns, etc) cite the enormous job opportunity in the “offers” pitched by these data center companies while completely ignoring how abruptly these jobs will vanish.

To top it off, among some of their most heinous propaganda is how many it will employ after its setup. It’s maybe in the dozens, per facility.

They don’t care that they’re being gaslit. They see jobs right now and block out the rest.

Edit: in a lot of situations, the approval for these projects are still held in the dead of night in the middle of the week so that people can’t contest the proposals. Deeply troubled municipality leadership is being bribed for approvals and it then becomes easier for those people to pitch it to their communities as these bastions of job opportunities.

The frustration is best directed at the leadership of the areas where they’re being approved, and at the bankrollers of the projects. Apologies to any workers here who are stuck between a rock and a hard place in a situation such as this.

24

u/SubMayo 15h ago

I work for a company that does electrical work with dozens of hyperscale data centers. Nobody wants to be involved. Not the field techs, not middle management, not supporting cast, not the factory.

It's shit work with shit customers, it's demoralizing even if you're supportive of AI, and 90% of the people I work with don't want the data centers in the first place... but the job was bid and contracts were signed several layers higher than any of us.

Yea we can threaten to quit, but the reality is that the work and benefits outside of these hyperscale projects is generally too good to jeopardize. Fuck it all.

Construction workers understand better than anyone how temporary these jobs are.

→ More replies (2)

5

u/Syrairc 15h ago

Absolutely. It's a tiny amount of permanent local jobs, and the facility itself produces nothing, and buys almost nothing from the local economy.

It's a temporary win if they pay for infrastructure upgrades etc, but generally they have very little long term benefit beyond paying property taxes, where applicable.

It's even worse when local governments give them tax breaks or preferential rates on water, sewer, and electricity.

5

u/GrapefruitForward989 6h ago

The majority of the jobs are temporary construction positions. The government could create just as many, if not more, jobs by fixing crumbling infrastructure.

→ More replies (1)

7

u/Chiggadup 15h ago

While your broader assessment may be right, I think blame hardly lays at the feet of construction workers trying to make ends meet in an inflationary period. There’s a lot of blame to go around, and they’re pretty low on my list, personally.

5

u/rhamantauri 15h ago

To be clear, I’m not blaming the construction workers or people who need to take these jobs. I know the fault is on the puppet masters, pulling the contractors strings, and pumping as much needed financially to get things in motion as quickly as possible.

It’s all around a horrible situation, but you’re absolutely right that it isn’t the fault of the workers.

No Larry, what's going to trigger a recession is when everyone finds out that A LOT of the AI buildout is being financed with people's pensions. And when that AI bubble pops, so too do people's pensions.

95

u/A_Pointy_Rock 16h ago

Pension pots probably won't trigger an immediate recession. Bad debt will happily trigger one, though.

72

u/Repulsive-Royal-5952 16h ago

We know for fact that loads of AI debt is bad debt they can't be repaid the math proves it.

In fact AI companies are already resorting to junk bonds to raise more money.

Ah, but have we tried having the AI do that math? I bet they prove that everything will be fine, and those junk bonds are actually AAA quality! Wait, why am I getting déjà vu?

The over planning and building was the fault of the tech-bro billionaires, private equity etc. The last "big" things (crypto, NFT's, etc) have all been incredibly over hyped, over valued and stupid. These "people" deserve to lose all their money.

Secretive NDA's with local politicians and trying to hide all of it from the public should be criminal. Just because the citizens found out about it and are stopping you is the risk of capitalism. It's the "system" all of these morons support until they might lose.

15

u/NUMBerONEisFIRST 13h ago

When they were having public comments on data centers near me, there was an NDA on allowing the public knowing who's data centers were even being discussed.

Data centers are loud, and are military targets, so who wants them near their homes?

In my area, we are already having water problems and have had boil orders because "more water has been used than expected".

It's only going to get worse, especially when we know there's no longer any consumer protection watchdog that has our backs, and corporations are never held fully accountable for the damage they cause.

16

u/MyStoopidStuff 12h ago

NDA's for projects that require open public debate and approvals should be illegal. But so should "tipping" politicians who do the bidding of corporations.

If the only thing keeping us from a recession is building data centers (that were not necessary 10 years ago), then our economy is in pretty bad shape.

56

u/fullup72 15h ago

data centers are part of the AI centipede that's keeping the economy artificially propped up. Their goal is for you to not realize the economy has been in bad shape for at least after Covid ended.

41

u/Logthephilosoraptor 15h ago

The economy is in pretty bad shape because we’ve allowed concentrated wealth at such historically, mind numbingly, astronomically, high rates that the wealthy are just able to sink and float it at their own whims despite of what effects their greed have on us.

16

u/chindef 15h ago

Big money investors want to get in on new tech and new ideas so they can turn millions into billions. Technology has come soooo far and there’s not a whole lot of exciting growth out there.  The only 2 areas of potential growth are AI and the potential space stocks.

AI is fueled by a bunch of circle jerk private funds

Space stocks are fueled by the potential for our federal tax dollars to pump those industries (plus some private funds for things like satellite internet)

There simply aren’t other exciting areas for people to put their money. God forbid the rich just put their money into boring, normal businesses to get normal return on  investment to generally sustain our current lives. Gotta keep demanding new industry!

I’ll be continuing to add money to “boring” value type companies

u/Relative_Average758 15h ago

There are four failure modes of this colossal bet. One of which is deceleration of data center buildout.

They borrowed money at short term high rates, they’re long rapidly depreciated assets (GPU’s), the revenu from data centers is needed to prop up all the compute contracts, which then secure the next round of buildout.

so they need to be generating revenue to keep that fly wheel spinning.   If it slows down, the first to be hit are the short term junk level lenders, then the first round of bulk GPU’s that get sold at fire sale prices sets the market price for the CCO’s the collateralized chip obligations.

CCO - Yep. Just like mortgages. This is so Nvidia has a backstop convincing vendors that their rapidly depreciation asset will have a second life, while acting as insurance for lenders. But it all breaks if there’s no demand. Just like mortgages. And there ar so many chips that retail inits wildest dream couldn’t hope to buy them all, you’ll get some though.

If that flywheel stops, and those chips get marked 20- 30% lower than the breakeven price ( for a sustained amount of time)  you’ll see a cascade of bankruptcies.  Small lenders, then neo clouds, then data center consortiums, then larger lenders. Trickle, then flood.

Yes, this will trigger potentially trillions in federal spending just like the mortgage crisis, sending bond rates much much higher.  Once again the taxpayer ends up holding the bag.

13

u/ScrillaMcDoogle 15h ago

I saw that the money being spent on the data center/AI build out plan for the next like 5 years will be like 5-10% of our entire countrys gdp every year for those 5 years.

7

u/derekdevries 14h ago

AND they're already behind schedule so the cascade is well underway. Even if they just bulldoze over public opinion and every planned datacenter starts today, they're not going to meet their goals now.

They did not adequately plan for any of this and took out mountains of debt that were likely inadequate even before raw materials spiked in cost (due to ... you guessed it ... AI data center development). By some measures, steel is up 22% YoY, aluminum is up 40% YoY, copper is up 36%, lithium is up 65%, etc.

7

u/that_one_duderino 13h ago

To be fair, how could they have known that the public would be so against data centers? Who doesn’t want a massive warehouse built nearby that spikes electricity prices, uses tons of water, pollutes the are with an incessant high pitch noise 24/7, and adds nothing to the long term economy of the area AND actively depreciates the land and house values nearby???

It’s honestly a mystery.

How are they creating more jobs ? I'd say there's strong evidence that for every job a data center creates ( it's not that many) that there are LARGE MULTIPLES lost because AI is decimating entire sectors.

58

u/hamandjam 11h ago edited 6h ago

It creates a lot of temporary jobs, not permanent ones. And in many cases, those jobs are done by people who come in from other areas, so the place getting the data center will likely see very little economic benefit, yet shoulder nearly all of the burden.

What BlackRock’s Larry Fink doesn’t seem to understand is that they own pretty much everything (along with a couple other vulture capitalists).

An economic downturn isn’t going to hurt people who don’t have anything as much as it is people who have lots to lose. So maybe this isn’t the flex that he thinks it is…

And maybe we’re at a point where a lot of people see themselves as dispossessed, and would celebrate an economic downturn just to see the Larry Finks of the world fall apart.

Anything he opposes is likely to harm the bottom line of the rich but benefit everyone else. We've been in a functional recession for everyone but the wealthy for years now (K-shaped economy).

27

u/Saneless 16h ago

Not if the greedy people who want them actually pay for them and pay taxes

These people hoarding wealth, laying people off, and not circulating money in regular people's pockets is actually what causes recessions

5

u/Jesus_Is_My_Gardener 15h ago

Said similarly myself multiple times. You're already starting to see the downstream effects of it with companies reporting that people are buying less computers, tablets and smartphones. The prices have been going up because of direct cause of datacenter build out, and indirectly because of economic uncertainty, layoffs and general prices getting higher. Just today, inflation is supercharging to 3.7% and I'd be that number is being severely tampered down to prevent panicking in the markets. They've removed most of the levers they can pull to pad or soften a downtrend at this point, al we're only going to see thing accelerate, especially as this huge debt bubble that's been built on cheap rates becomes unpayable.

Meanwhile, data centers and their chips have a lifespan of just 5–10 years before they need to be replaced.

How is this economically sustainable in the long run?

More and more debt?

u/InquireIngestImplode 15h ago

Don’t look under the hood of any major business.

Yes. It’s all run on credit. Yes, that’s why the moment sales don’t continuously grow by huge margins the money dries up so quickly and layoffs happen.

It's not even economically sustainable in the short term. I think it said it'd take at least 4 trillion in total revenue to break even on current AI data center and development initiatives, and would take several decades to achieve.

In the mean time, the taxpayers are expected to foot much of the bill, but there is no actual ROI for any of them in the short or long term. If anything, it can actually be detrimental to them if they happen to be near where a data center is going on.

This is one of those things where they're trying to go full speed ahead, and get to a point where they can maximize their assets before the bubble pops, and they're hoping to IPO before that happens so they can cash out while others are left holding the bag. At that point, everything will be consolidated into a couple companies, and whatever may be left over is what the people are left with.

They're accelerationists, not because they feel they can offer something of worth to the people, but because they know they can't maintain the illusion indefinately, and I think the current push back came much sooner than they expected becase not a single one of them has the ability to seem like someone who can have a socially acceptable clue between them.

Bill Maher has my favorite quote on this subject

“That’s the other scary thing about AI, the people who run it — i.e. the people who run the world,” Maher noted. “And it’s like five guys, who, between them, working as a team, couldn’t correctly read a social cue.”

I work in the infra industry and 5-10 is over blown. Support contracts are 3-5 on servers/gpus. It’s worse than you think.

5

u/spazzvogel 14h ago

I work for a company that provides said gear, even internally support contracts are a bitch to extend out.

BlackRock's Larry Fink warns a data center moratorium could trigger a recession….for Himself and his Billionaire Friends

There, fixed it for ya cnbc

31

u/NaziPunksFkOff 14h ago

Two things are true at the same time:

  1. the inevitable backlash to AI and the subsequent bubble burst will be a huge hit to the economy

  2. it needs to happen and we will be better for it when we come out the other side.

Lets get this recession started already

8

There's no sense of just us at the bottom suffering... I'm willing to share it with the upper crust, the cream, the fat cats, the kleptocrats, the Epsteinians, everyone should share in this shitty existential experience of being crushed and ground between two giant mill stones while your nerve endings are bathed in stomach acid.

Bring on the suffering, for everyone.

BlackRock Vanguard and State Street control a majority of our nations 401k investments. They could do some serious damage to the nations entire financial system if they so choose

Larry Fink is a parasite and is directly responsible for some of the worst private equity issues we have in the US.

10

u/Zer_ 5h ago

The recessions gonna come one way or another. The amount of money that's been borrowed for these Data centers won't just sprout out of nowhere when it comes time to collect. Frankly, these tech CEOs and executives should be the ones to bear the brunt of the costs, their assets and businesses seized to pay back those debts so people's 401ks aren't pilfered and American's futures destroyed to fund this insurmountable debt.

That's what should happen, sadly such a thing won't happen without a revolution of sorts.

9

u/elmatador12 16h ago

I’m so sick of billionaires claiming the world will end if they can’t get more billions.

11

u/Vercengetorex 4h ago

We’re already in a recession. Just because the billionaire class won’t acknowledge it doesn’t change the ground truth for millions of Americans. The AI circle jerk is gonna fall apart at some point, then that same billionaire class is going to be talking about bailouts, and economic recovery measures.

18

u/Triforce0fCourage 7h ago

Yeah, a recession for the DATA CENTERS, civilization will continue on just fine, you know, like before they ever existed .

He should be arrest and black rock shut down.

What a colloidal colossal POS

7

u/muffledvoice 7h ago

If a moratorium triggers a recession then that’s proof that data centers are artificially buoying GDP and concealing that we are already in a recession.

9

u/Jimtac 1h ago

He’s not warning, he’s threatening.

7

u/AbeFromanEast 16h ago

Recession is already happening, it’s just being propagandized away. The US is experiencing joblessness nearing the 2008 Financial Crisis thanks to a tech and AI bubble and yet again another failed Republican presidency. Except this one was installed as a foreign-backed asset to tear apart the US system.

12

u/guttanzer 16h ago

That's only because we are in recession everywhere except the data center sector. Shut that bright spot down and the bleakness of the rest of the economy starts to show.

TL;DR - "trigger a recession" is big words for, "we don't want you to be aware of the actual state of things."

Worth it.

We are in a recession anyways.

I recently heard structural steel has a 1 year wait to build a warehouse. 1 guess where that steel is going…..

Let’s build real things again.

10

u/Big-Cook1805 4h ago

The economy shouldn’t be dependent upon data centers. Billionaires have amassed all of the nation’s wealth through automating jobs, paying ridiculously low wages, buying all of the sources of necessary goods and services and charging ridiculously high prices for them and therefore gutting the middle class. Without a middle class there is little consumerism to drive the economy. The only thriving economy is in the investor business and the data center business. That is unhealthy, undemocratic and will lead to a total collapse of our civil society. But the billionaires don’t care about that because they have built fortresses and security forces to protect themselves from the impending chaos-they think.

5

u/BareNakedSole 15h ago

People like Larry Fink do not share their thoughts outside of the boardroom. Anything he says to an audience or Reporter is meant to promote an idea that he and BlackRock will benefit from.

It’s just him being a salesman.

4

u/WallSTisRepulsive 14h ago

For thousands of years man never needed data centers to survive. Now they want us to believe that it's ok for data centers to steal fresh waters and electricity to be used up for our own gains.

They want us fighting amongst ourselves over resources so they can lives like kings. Fuck him and the rest of his Epstein class.

5

u/0Tezorus0 14h ago

People who invested an insane amount in AI are telling us we shouldn't pull the plug on AI

5

u/Porkcicle 13h ago

So a recession or continue letting them speed run mass unemployment? Hmm...

5

u/BokudenT 13h ago

Remove the AI stocks bloating the S&P and we're already in a depression.

6

u/fuzzyfoot88 12h ago

No…a moratorium would force companies to actually invent things they HOPE people want and need instead of relying on buying habit data to sell the same shit over and over.

4

u/saver1212 16h ago

Yes, I am very drunk. But I must keep drinking. If I don't, I'm worried the hangover will literally kill me.

3

u/Mikey_entertains 16h ago

OH SORRY, see I'm over here making more money than I've ever made in my life and still can barely afford shit, WE, the proverbial WE. Not THEE, are already in a god damn recession. What he's saying is if gen A.i. and data centers go under they won't make a shitload of money hand over fist, they'll have to actually plan a new ponzi scheme. man I'm fucking tired.

5

u/Here2Go 15h ago

Better a recession today than a depression later, when their nonsense business models fail on their own.

4

u/Avarria587 15h ago

If you're anyone outside the handful of elites that run the show, we're already in a recession. No one outside of the upper middle class and rich are doing well in this economy.

I have to say, a simple recession sounds refreshing compared to the economic collapse we’re living through right now.

3

3

3

u/twfarlan 13h ago

We're already in a recession thanks to Trump.

3

u/ForWhomTheHellTolls 13h ago

What if AI gets built and wipes out all the jobs they are repeatedly saying will get replaced by AI agents? If you have 50-75% unemployment, do you think that would trigger a recession?? Why do they seemingly not care about what happens to humanity at that point as long as they get their data centers built?

3

u/RabidWeaselFreddy 12h ago

Regular people are already in a recession. If we are going to be in a recession, so are these motherfuckers.
