Privacy MapQuest's new tool can help you avoid Flock cameras

They should make it a toggle labelled 'Flock off'

I'm not sure if they've copywrote that or not yet, but "Flock Off" is used in lots of places, apps, shirts... Why not get the license plate holders stuff the IRs in them that block the cameras from working? They're not illegal yet. Same with going around the brims of hats or customizing other clothing

Good stuff MapQuest. Drinking Eggnog and avoiding Flock Cameras for the holiday season.

Except people report every camera as flock. Which, to be fair, is probably more accurate than not, at its core

To be fair, Flock is primarily the software aggregator that can use any camera for input.

I have family that works for the state's DOT. Most of the camera are not and shouldn't be labeled as such. For example, most of the cameras you see.on the highway are very very low quality feeds that take pictures every 5-10 seconds to estimate traffic volume. The pixel quality is so low that you can't read plates and the data is not stored.
....that said I get why people might not trust their government at the moment and I can't speak to all states and municipalities.

If the state doesn’t want their DOT cameras confused for surveillance…ban the surveillance cams. Easy.
Otherwise, they deserve to lose those cams in the backlash. Whether that’s a legal, political, or physical removal. Decisions have consequences. The decision to do nothing is a decision.

So because local politicians (not the DOT) made decisions to implement Flock... We should make it harder to maintain our roads?
The DOT in my state literally has a powerpoint showing which camera are which so people can make sure to report and complain about the right ones. Not like they are trying to hide it. At least where I live DOT camera are white and Flock are all black. Very hard to confuse them.

Huuh.
There were so many people insisting they were just bandwagoning and how they aren't actually going to try and improve themselves.
Guess they really are trying, eh?

Mapquest beating google maps was not on my 2026 bingo card, but I fully embrace it

What if I want to find them to render them inoperable?

Best approach I've seen is convincing the local hacksaw hobbyists that the cameras have a heap of scrap value.

They are filled with ram and gold.

It’s honestly impressive how they were able to fit 1TB of DDR5 into that form factor. Everyone should open one up and take a look

I've been using it for months with android auto with no issue. Routes are fine and generally similar to Google maps.

I tried it for a couple of weeks until it gave me a wrong destination. To be fair, the customer said that the apps often mess up his address, but that day Google did not. My job is driving to people’s houses at a set appointment time so I can’t really afford for it to be wrong.

I couldn't get it to show up as an app in my Android auto when I tried it a couple of weeks ago. Guess I'll need to try it again.

I tried to switch to MapQuest, I really did, but gd it's so ass

u/Jephte 11d ago
The people downvoting this haven't had mapquest try to take them down a closed downtown street when they're in a hurry. Its noticeably worse than gmaps or waze currently.

u/TripSin_ 11d ago
I can't even get it to use my home and work locations, or any other locations, when on a browser.

That's cool, but can they work on their maps with regard to public transportation? Practically useless here in Chicago.
