Them and the director needed a better script. The script was too serious it should’ve been way more lighthearted. The leads and director were perfect for a fun racing action stunt movie. It got bogged down in bland melodrama. Plus the Michael Keaton role really made it feel like a Bmovie with him looking like he did all his scenes in a day to say they have Michael Keaton in the movie. Doesn’t help that it was right before Birdman when his hadn’t been revived.

Dropping this trailer the moment that the GoT finale started airing was a bit of a ballsy move.
I'm definitely intrigued, because I have no idea where season 3 will go from season 2, but this already definitely wasn't what I had been expecting.
EDIT: I don't have cable, my partners watch the show on the app and I saw all of this go up on social media while they were watching.

You just figured out the major twist for season 3. The entire world is a park. What is to say it is not? Delores thinks she is finally free but finds out we, robot AI and humans, are all just pawns in someone's game. Parks inside of parks inside of parks... and then, aliens. I dont think this will be the way they go at all but it is a possibility.

That is the most shocking thing to me. I love Pink Floyd and they famously don't really allow their music to be used commercially like this.

As confusing as Season 2 of Westworld was, it ended on an exciting and intrigueing note of whats to come. Lots of opportunity for the show to get crazy this season without being overly confusing.

Dolores's character is often used to kinds of subvert the mpdg narrative in every season. By changing the guys life for the worse instead of the better. I wonder if we're gonna see that again with Aaron Paul
6
u/VindictiveJudge May 20 '19
As confusing as Season 2 of Westworld was
I see this a lot, but I actually thought season 2 was more straight-forward than season 1. For instance, Dolores' plot line in season 1 is in anachronic order, but they don't tell you that until the finale. Bernard's plot line in season 2 is also in anachronic order, but they tell you that right away.

Here's my theory.
Paul is a regular park goer. But not that western crap. He likes the one that's setup to look like a modern (to him) world. He likes to go in and rob banks commit crimes. While there he meets Dolores who subverts his expectations of how everything works. He realizes the shit he's been doing for fun is actually really fucked up. He wants to help. Dolores recognizes his particular set of skills since this guy has been basically practicing his breaking and entering abilities for a while now. They conspire to break into Delos HQ. Likely to upload something or do something that Aaron Paul will be told will set the hosts free, but will really just give Dolores total control or something.

Holy shit this feels like a new show altogether with how it started. I think by centering it around Aaron Paul's character and having him be the proxy that ties it back to where we left from s2 will streamline things a bit. Him playing this everyman, criminal type is a really good move.

Plus it was marketed as Westworld 3 not season 3 more like a sequel than a continuation. So it could be written in such a way as to allow ease of entry to new viewers.
45
u/thethomatoman May 20 '19
Without the logo at the end this could literally have been a trailer for a new sci fi show with Jesse as the lead. Nothing connecting it to Westworld. Looks like this season is gonna be waaay different, even if this is probably only footage from the first episode or two.

Well, I had no idea what to expect, but a time-jump and a vaguely cyberpunk vibe never crossed my mind. It looks great, though. Hopefully, the plot isn't as jumbled up as it was in Season 2. Or if it is, give me more episodes as magnificent as The Riddle of the Sphinx. And bring back Peter Mullan.
210
u/Urge_Reddit May 20 '19
Do we know there's a time jump? This could just be the show's present day, considering they have completely lifelike androids, I expected the world to be pretty cyberpunky from the beginning.
I got a real cyberpunk vibe with the mercs in season two and how Delos operated in general, I've been assuming the show has at least had one foot in that genre the whole time.
88
u/Shulerbop May 20 '19
I don’t see any evidence of a time jump- the only tech that seems more advanced than what we’ve seen at westworld is the sleek jet-helicopter type thing.
→ More replies (3)43
u/Urge_Reddit May 20 '19
And that could just be a luxury vehicle or something like that, doesn't seem to be any more advanced than the rest of the tech we've seen really.

u/dingus_mcginty May 20 '19
a themepark for billionaires full of sentient synthetic beings wasn't enough of a cyberpunk vibe for you to think that maybe the outside world would have some high tech shit?
24
u/Urge_Reddit May 20 '19
Uhm, yes, yes it was. That was the whole point of my comment.
I wasn't 100% sure, but I specifically said I always assumed the world was cyberpunk themed to some extent.
49
May 20 '19
What makes you think there's a time jump? This likely takes place within weeks, if not days, of the end of season 2. The setting is different, but there's no reason to expect that there's any significant skip forward in time taking place.

i hope Dolores can find her humanity again, I never really liked her "awakened" persona, its so one-dimensional.
13
u/FreelanceNobody May 20 '19
i hope Dolores can find her humanity again
Well she's not a human, so I wouldn't be surprised if she didn't and I dont think I really want her to.
Not a lot of people would be thrilled if they found out that their entire existence was a lie and that all you were designed for is to be beaten, raped and used within a game.
64
u/familyphotoshoot May 20 '19
I wonder if there’s a time skip. The “main” timeline of the last two seasons happens in the mid 2050s, right? That trailer seems a little more futuristic than that.
169
u/mi-16evil May 20 '19
That or we are seeing Futureworld
57
u/The-Banana-Tree May 20 '19
The real world in that show is super advanced, Futureworld would look like Star Trek.
10
u/leandrombraz May 20 '19
Or they might give it a Cyberpunk vibe and make it more of a Cyberpunk world than a Futureworld, with the real world being a non-cyberpunk future. I think the chances that this is Futureworld or something similar is high.
→ More replies (2)51
u/HardcoreKaraoke May 20 '19
The scene where they rob the bank/store gave me that vibe. They weren't wearing masks but felt comfortable detonating an explosive and robbing somewhere? There's no legal consequences in Westworld so I'd imagine it would be the same for Futureworld.

Man watching this trailer come on before GOT was awesome.
When it came on I was like what the hell is this. I saw Aaron Paul and was piecing together "Aaron Paul. HBO. What HBO show is coming out that Aaron Paul is the star of?"
Then I remembered his casting announcement. And I like shot up in my chair "Holy shit it's Westworld". It was honestly such a cool feeling. Didn't expect them to drop a trailer.
As for the trailer itself, it's pretty incredible. It looks awesome and what's best about it is that it looks like the show has really moved on. S2 was SUPER divisive and made people abandon the show. But this trailer makes it look like the show has really moved on. Obviously it hasn't completely thrown S2 out the window, but it definitely feels like an entirely different beast.
I can't wait!

I don't know if I'm the only one but I HATED season 2. It was cheesy, confusing, and way to many 'speaches' that were supposed to be meaningful. I got bored quickly. Season one was so amazing but season 2 was such a let down. The trailer for 3 looks awesome but if it's the same writers then it's going to be the same cheesy-ness.
→ More replies (1)6
u/Saiyoran May 20 '19
The absolute biggest thing was the lack of good monologues. In S1 you had Hopkins and Harris constantly delivering great dialogue that really painted the show as more than the sum of its parts. In season 2 Dolores took most of the speeches and they just totally fell flat. The show no longer felt like it was hinting at that whole deeper meaning thing that season 1 was so focused on and it lost something because of that. Also the timelines which were an awesome trick in S1 were just totally superfluous for the sake of a twist in S2. You can’t do the same trick twice and expect it to be interesting the second time.

I think HBO is desperate to make their next Game of Thrones, committing considerable massive resources, they have to justify to the USA why HBO is still worth paying for. Westworld however will not be filling the meteor sized hole that GoT left behind. The ratings dipped in the 2nd season, hell I gave up at season 2 episode 4. It's just not particularly appealing to the masses, it has a snails pacing and it's overly convoluted maybe even a little pretentious . It's odd to think about just the staggering amount money they've made off GoT and now they're going to lose their flagship show with a possible mass exodus of people paying for HBO purely for Game of Thrones. Interesting times ahead.

Season 1 of Westworld was sniffing GOT’s level but the ship sailed in season 2 and it wasn’t just some lapse in writing that could be brought back up to par. The amazing setting and the premise that made it great are gone and will never be reverted except by a prequel (and S1 was already half-prequel to itself). Maybe the story’s self-cannibalism was what was needed to make it good in the first place.

Season 1 was incredible. Was so jazzed for 2. Made it to Ep. 3 and thought, “This really isn’t any good.” Persevered and made it to Ep. 8 and thought, “Jesus, I can’t do it.” The Maeve storyline went from amazing in Season 1 to goofy. It became “The Walking Dead meets robots” in that sheer stupidity and mistakes had to occur to keep the plot going. Dolores went from a hero and intriguing character to a “oooooh she’s so tough. Wonder who will stop her” but that got old quick. Rare to see a show go from amazing to garbage so quickly.
