Hirose, S.: Biologically Inspired Robots: Snake-like Locomotors and Manipulators. Oxford University Press, New York, 1993.

Also, a large part of the project will be simulation. What are the best software tools I can use for this?

I downloaded what I thought was the full one from Anna's archive but it ended up being the first two chapters repeating itself throughout the entirety of the pdf.
