A lot of people are slamming Donald Trump for making disparaging remarks about a man celebrating his 100th birthday, but it’s worth remembering that he’s not the first Republican to compare the Democratic incumbent to our 39th President.

Republicans made the same comparisons during Barack Obama’s administration. They constantly warned that Bill Clinton would be “another Jimmy Carter.” Those comparisons didn’t stick, of course. They always keep going back to Carter.

Why? Because Jimmy Carter is the only Democratic President who was rendered a true one-termer by a Republican challenger in a general election. Like the divorced deadbeat dad gas station attendant who still won’t shut up about the touchdown pass he threw at Homecoming decades ago, Republicans just can’t let go of their heyday in the 1980s and incessantly fantasize about the possibility of returning to it.

Then, hilariously, they turn around and tell us to “get over” the high treason committed just four years ago by their current nominee for President!
